Winter Smallmouth Bass Fishing: Broke My PB! Finesse Jigging for GIANTS!

January 3, 2024 on the Susquehanna River. The river was high, coming down from flood stages days prior. Looking for eddies of deeper slack water where fish could hang out with minimal effort and ambush prey as it drifts downriver.
Broke my previous “personal best” smallmouth bass (3 lbs 15 oz, caught in October 2023 at City Island).
This day was a huge day for me. I didn’t just catch my PB Smallie, I caught my first January smallmouth bass ever. And the coolest looking smallmouth I’ve ever caught (the one with the black spots all over). I’ve tried in previous years to catch bass in the winter, but have never had any luck whatsoever once the water temp drops below 40-45 degrees. Two things that made a difference this year:
1. My persistence: Going out every week no matter what. And:
2. Better intel: I got some great information that helped me narrow down my approach by watching these two channels

Nice video dude!!!...I grew up on that stretch of water and caught my PB in both Smallie and Walleye beneath the Dock Street Dam just below where you were filming.

You might want to put the fish up against the end and not 3 inches away to make it look bigger. Yeah, I caught you. The video shows it clearly.

I don’t lie about fish sizes. Watch in slow motion. Also, exactly how long do you think a 4 1/2 pound smallmouth would be?

@@GillRaker79 I watched it 3 times in slow motion and I was proven right. You had the fish on the board the wrong way first off. And there was a 3 inch gap between the end of the board and the end of the tail. Plain as day to see because you slipped your hand away just enough to see it. Maybe you need to take a few more looks at it. As for a SUPPOSED 4 1/2 pound fish and what it would be varies on the thickness and width of the fish. Not all "SUPPOSED"4 1/2 pounders are the exact same length.

Watch as I pull the bass up and my hand moves out of the way. I get the bass’s head 4” off the board and the tail has only slid one inch up from the end piece. I literally pressed the tail to the end piece when I finalized my measurement. I understand that I had the fish on in the opposite direction (I know better now), but I was still able to get an accurate measurement. I admire this mission that you’re on, but you’ve got the wrong guy. I caught an even bigger smallie since then. I hope that doesn’t make you mad. Also, “supposed 4 1/2 pounder?”

I know what I saw. It was 3 inches from the bump end of the ruler. Sorry you're butt hurt for being called out for your deception, but you LIED!!! And no, it has nothing to do with being mad. Just don't like people trying to deceive me.

@@jeffyount3559 hey man, you can believe what you want to, but I was there. Like I said, I admire your mission, but I do suggest you recalibrate your bullshit detector, because I’m telling you: It is off. It’s not hard to find guys actually being deceptive. I see it almost daily. Please go bug them. They actually deserve it. I would but I have a different mission in life and I have no time for it.
