Your son is so amazing! It takes great strength for our children to be able to recognize when they need help, and to ask for help. I am so glad you could find help for your son and your family. Our youngest daughter has Bipolar I and ADHD. We have a similar program in place, which has been great. I pray for your son and your family.

Shay, you are so courageous to share Ryan’s story. Not a lot of people would. Ryan deserves a lot of credit for opening up to you and allowing you to tell us all what’s happening. The fact that he was honest with you and accepted therapy shows a maturity beyond his years. He is certainly on the right track now. Take care of yourself and enjoy the time you are spending together. The silver lining in this is the extra time you get to hang out together. 🥰🥰🥰

OMG, Shay, are you such a strong and courageous person, sharing this with us. And a huge congratulations to Ryan for coming to you and telling you what was going on. That had to have been SO difficult for him. Goes to show that he has wonderful parents and is being raised to be a strong and honest man. Like you said, some woman is going to be so lucky. Prayers that Ryan continues to get better and that the whole family heals. It’s awesome that he’s getting the help he needs and that you are also doing the family therapy as it involves not just Ryan but everybody. Really gives you insight into what he’s going through, doesn’t it? Please keep us posted how things are going, Shay. Hugs for you. You are such a sweetie.

Hey Shay, sending you lots of ❤ during these challenging times. Ryan is one brave young man! It takes a lot of guts to reach out and be so honest about what was happening. Good for you to get him immediate help and work through this as a family. In my field of work, I deal with a lot of mental health issues with my high school students… self awareness and family support are the keys for treatment and recovery. Thinking of you ❤

Ryan feeling comfortable enough to come to you and tell you his thoughts and tell you he wants help, speaks volumes of the person you are and the young man you and your husband have raised him to be. I completely understand why it took you awhile to be ok speaking to everyone about this and I wouldn't have blamed you if it took you months or years to do so. I commend you for doing so and your son for saying it was ok to do so. My son struggles with clinical depression and anxiety and he also was able to come to me and tell me he needs help. Allow me to praise you both. You for putting it out there in public. And him, first by realizing he had a problem, second to get to courage to speak about it, third to choosing you (especially you) to talk about his darkness, and fourth admiring he needs help! On both of you, talking about it requires A LOT of courage. As a mother I can’t even imagine your despair, for your safety, but most of all the fear of losing your son. 😢😢😢😢 Don’t know how to help in this kind of situations so all I can say is: BE BRAVE, don’t lose hope. Shay, I am so proud of you along with Ryan. You for having the strength to come on such a big platform and talking about such a private/personal issue that you and your family is going through. Ryan for trusting you to get him help and allowing you to talk about this and hoping this will help someone. Nate and Lou for being great siblings to him. He knew you would get him help but sadly he's been suffering for awhile. It's a family crisis not just Ryan and Shay crisis. It's good they have those programs for kids now because so many are suffering with mental challenges. I believe what that person stated about some kids sabotaging themselves. My son waited until the end of college to sabotaged by abusing alcohol and partying. By then he was 21 and no matter what we said or did it was too late. 😒 I pray for Ryan, you and the family for continuing healing and strength. Love you and your family

My family struggles with something similar with a cousin of mine whom he does not get the help, and it truly saddens me because i see how much his mental health affects him. He is more on the trying to find his identity side of it but struggles a lot and has recently been diagnosed with different mental health disorders. It's amazing how candid you are talking about what you're going through. It does no good to hold things inside and talking openly about difficult topics (especially mental health) could help so many people without you even knowing it. Big hugs sent your way. You are an amazing mom with an amazing son, the fact that although he was having those thoughts that you were still his safe person to talk to ….says a lot about your relationship foundation even if you weren’t spending the time as much together before he talked to you. It’s really hard dealing with any mental Illness with our kids. I have had to deal with it myself with my oldest daughter and it can take quite a heavy toll on you just like any illness can. All you can do now is continue to heal as a family and Continue to enjoy your time with him. Do know you are in our thoughts 🥰 Side note if you ever get stuck somewhere for a long time like hospital or anywhere really and forget things to entertain yourselves there is a pretty fun app game called Millionaire that is kinda like Monopoly with a twist. My oldest son and I used to play it for hours on my phone and we would laugh so hard playing it.

So we get sent home and I had already got him an appointment the next day from his doctor that proscribes his meds. That's when we found out that he has Autistic psychosis.

Shay I’m so sorry you and the family are going through this. It’s is hard being a parent, especially we you know your child has anxiety or ADHD, depression or any mental health. It’s great that you have gotten him back so quickly, and hopefully it bring your family back closer for that tighter bonding time it sounds like YOU are truly missing. I too was isolating from family when they were present, and I had to learn limitations on myself, for isolating. I wish my own family had taken the care and time when I was a kid to help me as you are with your own kids. Today, with my own mental health challenges and under the care and guidance of my medical team, I do use CBD, or when I’m in CA THC, BUT AND ITS A BIG BUT, it is under the guidance of my care team! With the correct counseling and guidance it has helped with my mental anxiety, migraines, and chronic pain, to let me continue to work and function normal without prescription medications that can have worse side effects. Our kids didn’t come with manuals, we were young and then all of a sudden they are placed in our arms we are crying and they push us out the door and say “there you go, have a great life, what a beautiful baby “ but never tell you how to handle the tuff situations. You did a great job one the first one so knock the training wheels off, you got 2 more kids, who are going to test you as they get older in different ways. But you are a warrior and you made it through one of the toughest challenges as a mom, when your kid COMES to you for help! I love you Shay and I’m sending you and hubs lots and lots of parenting prayers

What an amazing video, I am so proud of you, for being able to share your story, and for Ryan to being able to go to you for help. That is amazing in itself because most teens don't do that, and most teens don't have parents that care that much to listen. Always believe, and i say this all the time that everything happens for a reason. Also health care and being able to reach and have help should be much easier then having to jump through hoops to find the help that someone needs, most the time when you need help its instant you cant wait. So that should be easier to access. Anywho I just wanted to say thank you for sharing your story. Its opened my eyes and your situation could happen to any of us, I just hope my son and daughter will come to me for help, I do tell them all the time they can come to me for any and everything but you know some kids still feel like they cant speak. But they do know they can come to me for help. I hope and pray that y'all continue to spend quality time together and Ryan continues to get the help he needs. Your doing an amazing job as a mom, hes a lucky kid to have you there for him! Oh and a little advise from one ADHD person to another, the medicine that helped me the most when i was in high school was Vyvanse, that's just my personal opinion and experience though. I still to this day don't think I would have graduated high school without it. It helped a lot! Ohk I think iv'e over-typed at this point ha-ha, so I hope ya'll have a wonderful night. I really enjoyed this video. :)

It so so great that he opened up to you. Burdens are better when shared and I’m thankful he came forward and realized he needed help.❤

I’m really glad your son was honest with you and asked for help. The fact that he asked for and is open to getting help is his best tool to getting better. I was diagnosed with depression and anxiety along with ADHD when I was eight years old. I’ve been on medication and receiving counseling on and off my entire life. I’m 47 now. You and your family are also doing a wonderful job supporting him.

Hi Shay, sending you very big hugs. We have a 20 yr old in college now and oh how I wish I could share my story. Things do get better with medicine and therapy. I’m so glad Ryan opened up to you. That’s huge and sounds as though the family is getting the help. You’re an excellent mom and please don’t forget that. Do you think there might have been something in the weed (lased) that was making him think those thoughts??
@brenda-mommabdiamonddrille873
Thank you for being brave enough to share this, Shay. Please tell Ryan that I, personally, am so very proud of him. I have a tendency to be an introvert some of what you have shared has hit home. And I am going to act upon being more present in my daughter's life. I am going to listen more, and I am going to be there for her physically. When you said how thankful you were for those 50 minutes of visitation. I am blessed with an endless amount of time to be with my daughter, and I need to make better use of that time! I will keep you all in my prayers and thank God that Ryan came to you and spilled his feelings. Love you!

Hi Shay, I know exactly what you’re going through. I’ve been through it 3 times and I’m a single mom and had to do it on my own. My middle child at the age of 17 attempted suicide by stabbing themselves in front of me and my 2 other children with the youngest being only 4 years old. They ended up in the ICU for a week and went straight into the pediatric psych unit from the ICU for 3 weeks. My dad refused to help I called on the way to the hospital to stay with my 2 other kids because I knew they were in shock and as I was separated only 5 months and my ex left the country to avoid child support I had no one else to ask, as my mom was deceased, my brother was on vacation and my dad refused to call him and my sister lived in another state so I had to leave my kids alone luckily the my oldest was on spring break and was home from college that week. But I could not bring the 4 year old to the psych unit for visitations and had to frantically search for sitters thankfully my oldest had girl as in female friends that volunteered to watch my 4 year old. Afterwards the were in an outpatient day program for 6 weeks but when they went back to school couldn’t handle it and they asked to be put back into another day program. That 4 year old turn out to be autistic and at 13 was cutting themselves and was placed in a pediatric psychiatric hospital for 3 weeks in 2019 once again I did it all on my own. My oldest by then was 29 but lived in a state 10 hrs away, . Again my dad refused to help. He showed up once to see his grandchild. A side not was that at this time my child was in a therapeutic intensive support program in a special needs middle school with a psychiatrist and therapist included in their normal school schedule and the hospital was working in conjunction with the hospital. My child at 13 was diagnosed as bipolar since there was anger and aggression issues. The following year almost a year to the date my child now 14 was hospitalized in the height of Covid May of 2020 because they put a chefs knife to their throat and threaten to kill themselves if I didn’t turn their phone back on. It was remotely turned off because it was bedtime and they needed to go to bed. Off to another psychiatric 3 week hospital stay and now more psychiatric meds being added to their Lithuim. On Sept 2020 they switched to a therapeutic ISP high school and instead of a psychiatrist they were assigned a psychiatric nurse practitioner. In March of 2022 I found out from a third party a non medical personal at the school totally by accident that the nurse practitioner removed my child’s bipolar diagnosis from their record despite the fact 2 psychiatric hospitals during 3 week inpatient observations diagnosed the bipolar 1 disorder plus the psychiatrist at their previous school who had my child for 3 years from 7-9 grade. My kid in Oct -Nov 2021 had been back and forth to the peds not feeling well and it turned out to be Lithuim toxicity, the nurse practitioner in May of 2022 when I confronted her about removing the diagnosis and me questioning why she was keeping him on a very toxic medication if he wasn’t bipolar she weened him off of 4 out 5 of their psychiatric meds. Since the end of the school year in late June we’ve been in crisis once again my child has progressively has gotten more aggressive, extremely angry and it’s all directed at me. It’s took me all summer and up until Tuesday of this week to find my kid a placement in an outside psychiatric clinic with a psychiatrist and therapist. We’ve meet with the psychiatrist he spent 2 hrs with us. I brought all the hospital records, all of my child’s testing for disabilities and learning disabilities. My professional career was a clinical medical research scientist. I worked on NIH’s AIDS clinical trials in the late 80’s and was at the meetings that developed the first protocols. My last employer was Pfizer and I actually worked on Zoloft before it got FDA approval. So I’m able to converse with any physician at their level and ask all the important questions. I handed the paperwork to the psychiatrist and told him that I needed an unbiased answer gave him the whole story told him that the statics and clinical observation tell me that the 2 hospitals and previous psychiatrist were right and my kid is bipolar and has been left under medicated as far as his bipolar disease is concerned. After 2?hrs of detailed questions and answers and observation of my kid I got the answer . My kid is bipolar. We got a plan in place one med that my kid was given to help with insomnia is being weened off since it can make aggression worse in bipolar disorder. Then my kid will be placed on a med that will target aggression and anger. The doctor ordered weekly therapy 3 individual a month and one family therapy with me since my kid has been verbally abusing me and their anger and aggression is targeted solely at me. Especially since there was sn incident in Oct 2020 where my kid pushed me so hard my feet left the floor and I landed on my head and and I had a severe concussion that took over 6 months to heal and I also had whiplash I couldn’t move my neck without extreme pain and laying down was excruciatingly painful. Even though we have a plan in place we are still in crisis. My 28! year old who also lives with me worries that while they’re at work their 16 year old sibling will hurt me. This week in particular has been very difficult and I hate to admit it but I fell apart. The only thing that keeps me sane the last 15 months is my diamond painting and my other crafts. Now I wrote all my experience because I heard your voice and I know exactly where you are at, I know how scared you were and you’re not on sure footing … I’m here to say there’s another mama out there that has got your back. I’m an empath and I’ve always tell all my stories. The stories you get from me is what I sense you need. I’ve been through countless challenges in my 61 years on this earth, I’ve been tested and survived but I’ve been through them alone. I know my life’s purpose for being on earth is so that no one else has to go through what I’ve been through alone like I did. So Shay my name is Anastasia and in Greek Anastasia means resurrection, rebirth, renewal, like a Phoenix. So I’m going to email with my contact information and if you need to talk to someone who has experienced what your going through now I will always be here for you. No matter day or night. I will be sending you , your son and your entire family lots of love, strength and healing energy❣️. ❌⭕️💜💜💜

Thank you so much for sharing your story. I wish I had seen this video in April. My son who is on the navy has self ha thoughts. So he took himself to the hospital. He was admitted to the hospital for a week. He was out for a week and then drank to much and called me. He had alcohol poisoning. I made him call 911 and then call me back. It was the scariest thing I have ever been through. He is in San Antonio and I am in Knoxville tn. He was admitted again for 30 days. I was able to fly there the 2nd time. The frustration of only getting to see him for 40 mins. The military complicates things. I was so lost and scared. He is doing much better now. That being said your video is a help to me now and I imagine it will be big help to others. As one mom heart to another your family will be in my prayers. Mental health is a marathon not a sprint. ❤

Ohh Shay.. I am so sorry for you all, my thoughts and prayers will be with Ryan and the rest of your family in this trying time for you all ❤️❤️ Ryan, you are a Rockstar for handling this situation so maturely and wanting to get better.. I had thoughts like that in 2010, only mine was to hurt myself and that people would be better off, if I was gone 😔 I am so happy for you all that help was found quickly and that you are able to bond tightly to heal together ❤️ Shay, my phone and dm is open if you need to unload or anything ❤️🥰
