Dear Gary and Fieldsport channel, great video. However I have another take on this. Here In Sweden 90% of people use Fluo except when fishing with Jerkbaits, that's where they use TI 60lbs wire. Me myself was using Fluo for more then 10 years but have recently changed, today I fish TI 60lbs wire for my Jerkbaits (or "pure hardhats without spoon") and for everything else I use a stainless steel wire 60lbs, I only use Fluo today when I want to throw a lure that maximize my recommended casting weight on the rod. Why not Fluo for me? well after 25+ years of fishing I have changed leader materials countless of times and just as a fly line and their leaders, tapering and diameter is an important factor. Casting a 1-1,5mm Fluo leader, or even thicker if you go Mono is to stiff and thick for it being comfortable, and you don't feel the rod loading as it should, when going with a SS wire or TI wire I like the thickness and flexibility more and I can feel my rod loading better meaning better connection with my bait/lure, Fluo being thick and being able to stretch is the total opposite. Another downside with fluo is simply that if it gets damaged it starts to peel off and you need to change leaders, for me I went through a spool of 50m 1,2mm Fluo during the summer, and following summer I used a total of 3 SS wires and 1 TI wire. In the end it comes to preference, this is what I discovered after all my tears fishing, the important aspect is that you choose what you like the most, one thing to note is do not always think of what "looks better for the fish" and thing of ergonomics some times as well.
"What material is best for pike fishing traces?" I'll give you a clue, one of them is "bomb proof except with sharp edges" says Gary. Pike have big, sharp, teeth.
It's crazy that people are willing to fish for pike without a trace. It's literally get the fish by any means even if it means leaving a lure in it or killing it. The Internet eh.
Brilliant video couldn't agree more with everything that's been said. Both have their place in pike fishing. I've had hundreds of pike on flourocarbon I like to use 1.3mm around 130lb bs. Never been bitten off. I've seen wire do a lot more damage to fish when they roll and slicing off scissors etc....
In my country a lot of fisherman using fluo now for pike, because they say pike will strike earlier. The thing is.. in my country pikes are overfished, they are conditioned, so people do every trick to get them to strike. Some pro anglers and one of them is nearly 70 years old and fished his lifetime for pikes, say that since they use fluo they caught more, instead of fish only following lures and not striking when using wires like titanium or steel. I liked to use titanium both single and multistrand and in none of my personal cases this broke, I used fluo as well and I landed pike on it, but I obviously see more damage to these kinds of leaders. Some people say that metal like titanium or steel wire can break because of metal suddenly gets "tired", they say well at least with fluo you can see when its damaged.I think when it comes to kinks, damage and thinness that mulitstrand titanium is the strongest and will not kink, but you have to know how to use sleeves and how to prepare it. Disavantage of mulitistrand titanium is that it is not good for lures that swim to all sides: it will get caught in the hooks. With fluocarbon, make sure to buy fluocarbon and not a cheap rip off, you can see it when you use fire. It gets dark and blackened when put in the fire.
Pike bites through fluoro (0,80 mm), i only use it as buttsection on my flyleader from now on, wire at the tip. Any signs of damage i replace it. Simple
Hey You're using 100 lb. fluorocarbon- and you mention trolling toughness----- I won't be trolling and dragging anything over rocks etc. so can I go down to say 60 lb. test fluoro. or is that a BAD idea??? thanks---
It's not kink prof either,i can see a kink at about 1.50 and curled at end of vid ha ha stop lying you fishing EXPERT ha ha bollocks and i agree with river piker PIKE do have big bad sharp teeth.
Asking an English man about pike is like asking me about old gray an rubber ducks pike are North America fish you ask a real pro .o it's fishing Britain sorry
You keep telling yourself that. You do realise that "northern" Pike as you like to call them are spread right across Europe and Russia? They are a major sport species in the UK.
The fact that Pike (Northern Pike to you) grow waaaay bigger here than in USA seems to have escaped your attention, asking a Yank about catching BIG Pike is like asking ne about Eggnog?
