Talking about the temperature drift of the resistance of a copper (aluminium) wire or winding. Using the Temperature Coefficient of Resistance (TCR) to calculate the resistance from the temperature or the temperature from the resistance. Real life experiments with the resistance thermal drift in a transformer and a fluorescent inductor winding. Estimating the temperature of a winding based on its resistance change. Resistance thermal change calculation added to my online calculator:

Also, most of metals (copper and few precious metals can not go supercunductive at all) at certain low temperature starts exibiting superconductivity, or simply, resistance drops to exactly zero ohms. 😊 Using the positive temperature coefficient seen in metals one can design temperature probes with relatively linear temperature/resistance curve but highly stable and repetable one. For example, widely known platinum 100ohms, 1kohms, or copper 500ohms. I have seen few variable frequency drives that can measure (with accuracy of 1-2°C) motor windings temperature using this effect, but they must be calibrated with every motor connected...

Some 1960s 40W fluorescent lamp ballasts only had 15 Ohms or less resistance. Some newer ones have thinner aluminium windings and a smaller core. The same is true for older non-chinese vs newer chinese microwave oven transformers.

I never knew inductors had a lifespan. Just assumed they were solid state therefore basically last for ever. 👍😎🌲❄️
@DiodeGoneWild
@DiodeGoneWild 6 месяцев назад
Nothing and nobody lasts for ever. The insulation and the wire lacquer (enamel) deteriorates, and the rate od deterioration depends greatly on the temperature. But it can outlive you if the temperature stays well below the maximum.

Structures built of granite will last forever. Its the hardest rock. The victorian built stone buildings in the UK will basically last forever with minimal maintenance. Also think of the 2000+ year old roman buildings.

What is your opinion on those radio water meters? Example: METRA E-RM30 cooptherm cz metra-e-rm30 A teardown, and biopsy would be very interesting.

Great film material, a question that comes to my mind. How will an induction motor behave at very low temperatures? e.g. -40C?
@koharaisevo3666
@koharaisevo3666 6 месяцев назад
My guess is it would be stronger and draw more current, essentially it would behave like a motor with higher power rating.
@LMB222
@LMB222 6 месяцев назад
@@koharaisevo3666but then you have the higher friction losses due to the higer viscosity at that temperature. In short, it all depends to what the motor is connected.
@SzymonHawlicki
@SzymonHawlicki 6 месяцев назад
@@LMB222 You're right, the engine will definitely draw more current to do the same job. There will also be a problem with bearings and condensation in the engine. I'm thinking about a servo motor, because there will be a lot of variables there 🤣 And the main question is how to make it work and not only for a while? 🤣
@AncientAudiophile

Interesting information, thank you!Maybe you could also make a video about why the transformer or coil expected life time is shortening so much if the "tw" is exceeded even 10 °C? One could think that transformer is only copper wire and some isolation material (when not taking about oil filled high power transformers in power distribution lines) and there is only a limit when the transformer fails (insulation melts down and causes short circuit between windings) and below that the transformer life time is more or less forever.

Why don't you use your big resistance meter?
@koharaisevo3666
@koharaisevo3666 6 месяцев назад
That thing puts 25 A at the lowest setting though the device under test, that wouldn't be very suitable to do this experiment.
@DiodeGoneWild
@DiodeGoneWild 6 месяцев назад
Yes, 25A is too much. Maybe for a very thick wire. This test current would significantly skew the temperature of almost anything.

Sir, today I have made DK124 SMPS 12v circuit, by looking at the datasheet diagram of IC, 12 volt is there without load and when 12v is 1A load it is coming down to 4 volt, what could be the reason for this?
