I like the early quote from the article about "real-life economic concepts." As opposed to what? Economic abstractions? Economics is and always will be about human behavior, particularly in how we deal with the concept of scarcity. As long as scarcity is a thing in Magic: The Gathering, there will always be applicable economic models to go with it.

Wired typically has good writing. You're right by pointing out the article doesn't cover the topic well. I don't agree with criticism of flowery language. MtG finance isn't exciting at all. Where is the "story", the "point" of MtG finance. So the article focusing on that one man's struggles with gambling is try to have some humanity attached to it. That said, I agree the article isn't great. But put yourself in the writer's shoes. How do you turn MtG finance into an interesting article for people who don't invest or play magic.

If it's anyone to blame, it's privatizing of news outlets. Second, Wired is ENTERTAINMENT magazine. lol Fourth, clickbait and a good headline are two different things. One is a lie, the other is get you watch the video.

Out of all of Rudy's background sets, I find the giant stack of shipping boxes most amazing of all. It makes this whole charade almost seem real. He really puts a lot of work into getting Timmies to believe they aren't getting a one way taco ticket to hose town.

Most people I play in person are not the smelly, ugly guys that Wired wants to portray. Don't blame you for not doing the interview with them. I just want to share a funny experience while watching. So the vid stops for an ad and this viking character smashes through the wall; and in a serious, mythological, diety voice the character goes "I've have come to claim for your..." I finally can skip the ad and in the vid Rudy is like "sorry for that"

The writer is flaunting their ignorance, the general tone seems to be "I am going to do this article so I can $h!t all over these nerds and their Yugimon the Gathering cards" only once they started doing their research they found, much to their ire, the market and its clientele are actually quite sophisticated. So the "journalist" had to resort to character assassination, willful obtuseness, and a verbosity devoid of verisimilitude (see, I can do words too).

I thought the article really gave a timeline of how far mtg finance has come. Like how we got here. But what ppl don't realise is that these are not quick flips that bring great returns. You gotta treat these like comic books. Sit and wait Buy 2 play sets use 1 set and hold the other in a binder in the dark then sell it once you have a child on the way or become borderline homless. Everyone else is a Timmy.

My wife and literally had this exact conversation about the fake gurus today in our kitchen. The argument that they'd want to sell their methods for short term profit is a joke. If you were a true long term investor you'd know your secrets and methods would bring you more money in the market over a longer period of time than any course or class would make you in the short term. What a laugh.
