I wonder if I hooked up a Rode Wireless to my Tascam x8 if I still have 32 bit float recording capabilities. Lets find out.....

It doesn't matter what mic the audio comes from as long as it doesn't clip BEFORE going into your tascam

Yeah, that's mi thinking as well. The way he's doing the test you could make any wireless mic setup 32 bit, as long as the actual mic and reciever as set properly. It's not the 32bit float from the rodes transfering, rather he's just changing the input gain of the Tascam. As soon as the rode reciver would peak the audio would be lost.

Thanks. Yeah, it's a killer recorder at decent price. Thanks for stopping in :)

32 bit float is brilliant, but not invincible. Data blown out in the recording is recoverable. But if you low the mic out… it stays blown.

Is there a reason you used a 1/4” adapter through the combo jack instead of just going into the 1/8” EXT in? Preamps?

Nope. It’s what I had :)

A good test would be to make the Rode Peak before going into the Tascam, then see if the file is still useable.

THat's the point where the user still has to understand signal flow and mic selection. Clipping the source going into the recording would still be clipped (think distorted guitar)

@@delmixedit while that is true, but then this video is pointless. The way I understood his phrasing was that he wanted to see if the 32bit data would transfer over from rode to tascam, and that wasn't tested here. The way he did his test he could've used any source wireless or not, and the tascam itself still has it's 32bit float recording. The Idea of the 32bit in the Rode's is that even if you mess up that inition gain structure you can still save the audio. In this case if you only record 32bit float on the Tascam, and you don't properly gain the rodes, your audio will be damaged.

Have you had any luck with unplugging the built-in mics and using the Rode on that? I tried a couple things at a trade show and had nothing so I ended up using the XLR connections instead with an adapter. This X8 seems like a fantastic little unit. Now to try it as an audio interface...

Like physically removing them?

You can not recover it unless your mic has a high spl ( sound pressure level ) It is one of the key features of a good mic. Such as dpl 4061. Anywhere from 130 is high enough

What’s interesting is I shot a wedding last week with the x8 tapped into the speaker and I had some clipping. I was able to recover some but not everything. I had a very straight line when I brought down the gain.

Rode Wireless Go II does support 32-bit float. The option is now there.

Wow, I was not expecting that! I just bought the X8 and should be getting it delivered tomorrow. I was thinking about testing this out with my Rode Wireless Go 2’s before I watched your video. I’m glad it works! Do you think it would also work if you plug the Rode into the “EXT IN” port or if you remove the stereo mics and use those ports? Great video.
