I haven’t tried this device on my Pioneer AVH-1330NEX, but I would put this in series before my dash mounted USB port. I would plug this directly into the head unit then plug my dash mounted extension into the USB port. This way I have the same look with the wired port on my dash and the wireless car play would be a transparent addition.
It also works on a Pioneer SPH-DA130DAB 👍🏼 I use a Dongle from Carlinkit. They have also a Dongle for 99% of the Units. The Dongle ist similar to the Dongle which is shown in the Video.
If it helps anyone ive been using this for a week , works great really happy with it , updates are simple to do , it does seem like the best on the market at the moment
I can’t really say as I’ve not used these. But all I’d say is todays newer models will offer better resolutions, audio, connections and possible wireless CarPlay / AAuto also so you get a lot more for your money. So I would check out newer models over the 120
Is this works on DMH Z 5290 BT. Wired android auto, apple car play? Actually what is the operating system used in android players? Is it android version?
If it has wired CarPlay there is a chance. I would try the CarLinkit 3.0/3.0 Mini off Amazon. For easy returns if it doesn’t work and better config options. These wireless CarPlay boxes uses custom software on chip.
Hello. I'm trying to have carplay (waze and spotify) on my skoda fabia 1 (2006). Do you think Pioneer SPH-DA120 would be a good match? im using iphone 13
I would look for a newer model. This model is so old now and if you’re looking to fit an aftermarket there’s more modern head units out now that’s better than this one. Look for a higher resolution, wireless CarPlay maybe too.
Just a quick question if you had a charger plugged in but not being used would it being plugged in still override the wireless way with the charger still not in use but there just incase I need too eventually charge my phone?
@@SluGGYxx you can leave the cable plugged into it and it will run just fine. But soon as you connect it to your iPhone the dongle will crash. They are not meant to charge from this port.
You'll need a wired CarPlay enabled car stereo and USB port for all of these adapters. They just offer wireless to wired conversion. They can't make a non-carplay system have CarPlay, unless the car system has an android OS and can have apps installed onto the car system.
Amazon will likely be a reseller. So after sale support might not be so good. But with Amazon you might get easier returns of it doesn’t work out do the box for your vehicle/system.
Miguel Acuna No APK needed here. That would be for the other, cheaper dongle’s that only work with Android headunits. This dongle is for factory fitted or aftermarket headunits with wired CarPlay already enabled.
Oh no! Well, I am glad to hear I wasn't going mad, but also sad to hear that it also doesn't work for you. This has to be a software bug then, which has yet to be resolved. It's odd how it only works on the first connection. I'll have to try and see if by removing all connection profiles I can replicate it working for that first time.
CarPlay Life I tried that too. It’s firmware related as it was working fine till the latest update. Also if plugged in directly to the back to the stereo there are no issues. The adaptor is the issue.
Bret vid, just what I’ve been looking for... bit pricy though.. there are other ones (that look the same) on eBay for £40.. considering giving one a shot.
Richard careful with those. Some are for android systems only and work by installing an android APK onto the android headunit. It will not work with factory CarPlay systems, which is why they cost more than the android dongles.
@@RichO-00 The one in the link isn't the same functionality/compatibility and it is, unfortunately, confusing a lot of people. That dongle is what I was saying it is a dongle for Android car systems/receivers - that their operating systems are running the Android OS - not many, if any, factory systems do. Look at screenshot 2 and you will see it says 'Compatible with Android head unit' so it will not make a factory Wired Carplay system wireless. This is what the CPLAY2air does. CarLinkIt also does the same dongle, but prices are fairly similar.
It does say wireless CarPlay in the ad and photos.. for £40 I recon it’s worth a try.. if it doesn’t work as advertised it can go back and I’ll get a refund under the eBay terms and conditions.
Richard wireless is correct however it’s how it interacts with the system. If yours runs android, then go for it, if it isn’t it just won’t work. Good luck 😀
Seems to have nothing but negative reviews on your website though.. ?? So what if your unit connects to other bluetooth devices such as a dashcam or alexa for the vehicle is there problems with other bluetooth connections at same time?
Steve Ross Hi, the Bluetooth connection is only required for the initial ‘handshake’ between your iPhone and the dongle. After the initial connection, wireless CarPlay transmits over WiFi only. So if anything, it’s the iPhone’s WiFi connection that gets used up than the Bluetooth signal. As for connecting to other Bluetooth devices after that I cannot say, as I have never needed too. Some dash cams required WiFi to view footage in their apps and for that you will need to disconnect from wireless CarPlay and connect to the dash cam WiFi signal in order for its app to work. You’ll likely do this when the stationary anyway. So that is a non issue to me. Connecting to Alexa in the car I believe is Bluetooth and I think that maybe possible. I have an Alexa Roav dongle I could try and see if I can use wireless CarPlay along side this and report back to you. Most negative reviews will be compatibility issues with existing car systems, which is understandable, but there are also many user error issues. Meaning buyers just aren’t unable to understand how to get it to work. I hear many think this dongle gives you carplay without having it already in the car! 🤷🏻♂️ Like most reviews on the internet - for every negative there’s probably 100+ happy customers that don’t bother to mention how great it is for them. Hope this helps.
Really comprehensive video, I have this extract head unit installed in my golf, i would certainly consider buying this. I was actually googling the video format for SPH-DA120 as I was struggling to load a video in mp4 format but ended up here. Off topic but which firmware is that head unit currently running on. I don’t seem to have the settings for the green animated background screen.
It's great you found us :) As for the firmware, I have no idea, but the next time I unpack the demo pod again for another video I'll try and remember to check what firmware it is. It would be a very early firmware as I have never updated and I have had this demo unit for a number of years now. The animated background might be because the unit goes into Demo mode every time I boot it up. Hope this helps.
@@ZoysiaRUs The cheaper one is for receivers that run Android OS and it requires installing an APK onto the receiver. The more expensive one is a plug and play solution for factory systems and aftermarkets that are already running CarPlay. It is more common for people to be wanting the more expensive dongle. If you are running factory fitted system with CarPlay, it will require the more expensive dongle. No coupons here, sorry. Hope that helps.
CarPlay Life thank you! I was completely misunderstanding the term ‘factory’. For some reason I was thinking factory installed radio, not the fact that CarPlay needs to be factory installed, even if it is an aftermarket radio. I appreciate the help!
I'd be really interested in hearing results with the iLX-007 if you get the opportunity. Also, experience with the WiFi CarPlay in my wife's BMW is that having multiple phones enrolled in the system is handy but can be confusing so that might be something to cover in the review
Ok I’ll see what I can do. In regards to the dual iPhone. There is a menu system prior to carplay running through this dongle that allows you to select the different iPhone that’s paired to it. They are listed on the right side and pairing to the right one is done by selecting the iPhone you wish to you. I will test that out more though for my review. Maybe another video inside my VW. Thanks.
Thank you so much for the video! I've been using the SPH-DA120 since it came out. So far the Carplay2air has been around 90% perfect, I find that if it doesn't "hook" correctly on that 1 out of 10 start ups the only way to resolve is to turn the head unit off / on (Generally meaning the next time I start the car). Any tips for that once-in-a-while-issue without restarting the car? Symptom is either you don't get the CarPlay "Warning + OK" text or you click the green "CarPlay" button in the Appradio software and it just doesn't do anything. Finally, doe your SPH-DA120 physical forward / previous buttons work while in Wireless CarPlay mode? My worked prior to the wireless CarPlay addition but no longer work now so I've been limited to CarPlay software buttons. Thanks again!
Teal Krepper I get a black screen coming back into CarPlay from reverse display on the Alpine but pressing out to the car menu and back into CarPlay fixes this issue for me. Also if driving you can just pull the dongle out and back in again. I used to do that until I found the exit to menu and back to carplay fix. The pioneer we have is just a demo pod so it’s not connect to any wheel controls, or do you mean the forward and back controls on the pioneer?
CarPlay Life , gotcha yeah I installed it behind the head unit but will have to have it accessible if I need to unplug when the issue occurs. By controls I mean the pioneer built in (lower left of the pioneer head unit). While in carplay2air it doesn’t recognize the pioneer forward/reverse at all so I have to use the software buttons in CarPlay
Hello Great vid ! I have a Toyota innova 2019 in Argentina .. non compatible with CarPlay,,, would this device make it compatible with my iPhone for CarPlay? Thanks !
Your vehicle needs to have wired Apple CarPlay for this dongle to work. All it does it turn wired CarPlay into wireless, so you need CarPlay in the first place. Hope this helps.
Sorry no, you will need a receiver in your car to already have wired Apple CarPlay. It will not work with a car that doesn’t have Apple CarPlay already installed.
Bought this for my Audi Q7 2019. Worked for 2 days and cannot reconnect. No customer service what-so-ever. Website says 24/7 technical support...there is no phone number to call anyone. There is one phone number under "contact us" that has been disconnected. The online chat session is not manned. There is a tiny leaflet that comes with the the adapter which does has very little information on how to install. Very disappointed with it. Total waste of money.
Reading the comments on some forums, it shows that their customer support is certainly something that they need to improve. Sorry to hear it has stopped working for you on your Audi Q7. Hope future updates improve things for you or their support team get around to contacting you.
There is a lot more to it than simply plugging it in. It is mostly software that is doing the magic under the hood and that costs time to develop and tweak to make it work across multiple manufacturers and models as well as various infotainment specs within them. It's fair cheaper than replacing and installing your existing CarPlay system.
