Wiring a 220v Welder Electrical Extension Cord - Quick/Simple - But is it safe? 

I made a 50ft extension cord for my everlast inverter welder. Very useful to have as I run my welders off of the dryer outlet back in the house.

Just asking why didn't you just take the breaker out then take the wires off ? also use a insulated screwdriver if working with power on.. I know this from experience..Just suggesting to be safe. You can possibly get arc flash in some power panels using a screwdriver if not careful. I've seen it happen..

How I made my extension cords up a long time ago was I put a ad on Craigslist that I was looking for 6/3 wire and one guy contacted me. That wire was real expensive to buy. But I ended up getting it cheap that way.

Good video Gary. I use only 3 wires out of 4 too if I'm using it as an extention. White with black tape on it becomes my hot if I don't have a red. Normally it's black and red hot white neutral and green ground, that's today's code. However if you don't have 4 wire or don't want to waste money use white as hot and have no neutral. I use 100ft 10/3 soow works great on inverter machines.

i understand this is just a temporary cord. i am just offering what i would do. i am not criticizing you in any way. if you were looking to make a better extension using "so" cord, you would need #10 copper wire to handle 30 amp welder. would not use that "house receptable" for moving around. it is meant for permanent mount only. the plastic will break very easy on concrete and a shop setting. if i was making one instead of buying a premade molded cord i would use a 4 square bell / water tight box with a recess mounted receptacle.

Proper wire would be 10-2 awg. The neutral becomes your hot. So it would be black, black with white strip and green for ground

The pain in my elbow was so bad I couldn't squeeze nasal spray up my nose. Went and got shot the doctor said it would be uncomfortable the next day that was an understatement It felt like my arm was coming off but that night pain went away gone. If I had known that I would have gone sooner. Strangely Its not from moving your arm its from squeezing your hand. I was squeezing a pressure sprayer that got me. Anyway got to make a extension cord for welder.

I need to make an extension for my Everlast TIG welder.

My stove plug is the old 10-50 3 prong plug it has red and black as hot and neutral is white. I can't find anything about going from a stove plug to my welder just from a dryer plug to welder. My old stove 3 prong plug is on a 40amp breaker with 6/3 wire and the ground is only connected to the box. Is that OK to go from to my welder would I just use the neutral as a ground when I go from the 10-50 3 prong plug to the 6-50 50amp rated plug..

Green is Ground, White is your Neutral ... Black is what your fingers will look like if you're aren't qualified and go messing around anyway. Basic colour guidelines

Extension cords are the typical way to make welding machines mobile. They're a lot less expensive than running longer welding leads (which are still well worth having) and can be hung off your welding cart if desired. (I use scaffolding casters with large wheels for my welder cart and will never buy conventional casters for a welding cart again!) If ya find one long cord awkward turn it into two shorter cords. Twist-lock connectors are much nicer to deal with and more durable than the traditional wall receptacle style shown so if you convert your wall receptacle to twist lock, replace your male welder cable with a male twist-lock and use them on the cord you'll have a much better product. I have many cords and mix of parts but converted my shop to twist lock since it's much more durable and safer over repeated disconnections running a variety of equipment. The home gamer setup shown can last many years but the plastic shell breaks easily so I use the ends designed for cable instead. This style Forney is also at many hardware stores with a Forney welding products display. Your local electrical supply house and Ebay are worth checking too. Hardware store prices tend to be highest by far.

I got a outlet that reads 125/250 i have a 220 welder but the pattern is diffrent if i change the plug will i have any issuess ?

20 amp breaker = 12 gauge wire. 30 amp breaker = 10 gauge wire 40 amp breaker = 8 gauge wire 50 amp breaker = 6 gauge wire So a 8/3 wire has one red, one black, one white and one copper (ground). 8/2 has everything but the red wire.

Just BUY one! They're cheaper and heaps better than that with the crappy metal/plastic ends and the wimpy wire. Sorry, but true.

As for I know it, there is not a 12/4 wire.

Who illegally installed the sub-panel? Why did you not just mount the receptacle under the illegal sub panel with a short piece of conduit and do it correct? The receptacle used is for surface mounting as you said. It is absolutely not tested or listed for an extension cord. Why not just buy a cord cap receptacle and do it correctly? #12 is wrong! It should only be used on 20 ampere max circuit breaker or fuse. You should have used #10 minimum for 30 ampere breaker, or #8 for 40 or 50 ampere breaker. I still do not understand why most RU-vid videos show incorrectly making cords. And then say, “I’m not an electrician, don’t do this”. Why even make the video? Views and money.

YES, you sound nervous...ha ha. Anyone that works with elec. Is nervous at different levels. When your an experienced electrician you do it so much you don't see the nervous to much. A pair of good electrician gloves will help. Use wire nuts even if temp. Much safer. Most people can learn the basics and save a lot of money. But do everything you can to protect yourself. By a way most that get bit don't die. You here stories so you think that anytime you get electrocuted your going to die. If that's the case I would be dead a long time a go. Anyway good job

You should be wearing jeans my man. And long sleeves. And a cap. Safety first. Also you probably should have run the wire though a knockout on the panel just to be safe. And since you have space in the panel you might as well have gotten yourself a 50A breaker. Why run the risk? And it gives you the option of turning up the amps if you need to. And why not just get some 6/2 wire with ground like I did. It cost me $1 per foot. Not that expensive and way safer. That way you can plug in any welder up to 50A without worrying. And to answer the title question.....NO it is not safe....on multiple levels. Just bought a Titanium 225 Stick Inverter Welder from HarborFreight and it specifically says not to use an extension cord on the unit. Strange. "You're responsible for your own safety, not me". You should heed your own advice!
