Here in Australia.. we use 7-core cable to wire vehicle trailers for the lighting circuit. So I keep any of that and any I find I use for my layout... Some lovely steamers at the end.
Like you Ben, I'm reluctant to go to the exhibitions when they reopen, as all the ones I've been to pre-covid-19 were always pretty rammed with people. I can't imagine going to one any more than I can imagine wanting to get on a crowded aeroplane now.
I did it much simpler than this. I have two tracks on an exhibition board. Either track can be DC or DCC by just swapping the controllers. The points have their own switch box and work with both. There are 8 of them on one switch box. The only thing it can't do is have power to a train when the points aren't selected to make that section open. As they can't go anywhere, it really means not having DCC loco lights on when no in use. That's it. It works normally otherwise. I swap them regularly but tend ot prefer one for DC and one for DCC. I am adding a sound card soon that adds chuff and diesel sounds with power, so it mimics a sound card for when I run DC locos that don't have sound chips.

Hi David We have two or three insulfrog points on the layout. So they can be used. However they can give issues with certain locos shorting out as it passes the insulated bit. In truth, I wish I’d have waited for some electrofrog units and not used them. But that’s life 🤷♂️
You are now on tic-toc now? Oh dear watch your life disappear before your eyes as you inadvertently spend hours watching utter tripe you could have lived without seeing! I don't even have it but have wasted hours watching it with my wife on hers.
