This movie could’ve been SO GOOD if they used the original ideas like Starboy and maybe sticked to 2D animation. It could’ve been like one of Disney’s all-time-greats. But Disney is just cowards 😒
To be fair, they have no 2d animation at all. Disney shut down the 2d animation division in 2013 and paying actual 2d artists is just too much to ask for.
I mean, no. Disney's biggest problem is writing. This story is so bad it's not even phoned in. Very few people complained about Frozen even though it looks really generic and the story is less than stellar
The song writer Julia Michaels was done dirty they literally gave her a description with three weeks to write the songs and then that's it they never let her change or try to fix things to better fit. Songwriters are usually always involved throughout the entire movie production look at Alan Menken and Lin Manuel Miranda who are two of Disney's best songwriters
wasn't at all costs written in the early concepts and they didn't allow her to rewrite/rework anything? I swear I remember reading that somewhere and honestly it wouldn't surprise me in the slightest
To be honest, I like the songs- despite them not working with the actual story line at all 😅- I hear the Lin Manuel influence. If he had done the songs I don’t like ppl would be complaining as much as he’s got the “Golden touch” 😂
The only issue with the music is on a technical level. Especially “Knowing What I Know Now” with the uneven lines sounding like word salad Some lyrics are just atrocious, too. Obviously the “I let you live here for free and I don’t even charge you rent” is bad, but “you pull me in like some kind of wind” from “At All Costs” is really bad, too. A lot of lines sound like an alien wrote them
It's weird how they put a lot of detail on the characters' faces and hair, like freckles, blushed cheeks, and gave their eyes detailing, but the details on the clothes and the rest of their bodies look like they were forgotten about by the shading team. And the background characters look so plastic and lifeless, even when they're moving. They almost move like Wii characters.
I haven't seen the movie, but even from the clips I was startled at how dull the clothing was. It looks like place-filler that was being used until the actual clothing designs were rendered. Even the background villagers in Encanto wore rich, expressive clothing that made them feel real and personal and played into the world of the story. Background villagers in Wish look like they were assigned one of 5 muted colors, then only allowed to wear that color.
They should’ve had the Queen sing the duet with her husband instead of Asha. She wants to help her husband fulfill his dreams but seeing him turn into a narcissist ruler over the decades has her torn between the man she knew and her citizen’s wishes. She wants to protect them both ‘at all costs’.
Years of marriage and she kicks him to the curb with no issue. Why is the king a villain here when his wife does that to him for no reason other than he was evil for one day?
yeah ikr we could've had a cute duet with the star and asha and we could've had a villain couple too like imagine how the movie would if it was the concept art
We were robbed. We could’ve had an evil couple and a star romance. Also as for the animation they originally wanted 2D but then decided on a mix of 2D and 3D. I don’t understand how it looks like this they already have the perfect 2D and 3D blend animation that they used for the short film Paperman. What would’ve worked more was if the king and queen were both evil and Asha was their daughter. Then Asha would’ve grown up thinking that keeping the wishes was the right thing and star boy had to help show her the right way. Also it would add a lot more to Asha’s character by standing against her parents since for all the other Disney princesses with evil parents they’re always stepparents (Lady Tremaine, Evil Queen, and Gothel). So the fact that a princesses actual parents are evil would’ve been so cool. I get wanting villains like the Evil Queen back but Magnifico should've been the sympathetic villain that is way too overprotective and wants to protect everyone due to his own trauma Also I wouldn't make Asha quirky I mean she can definitely have somethings but not as much as they did. I would make her more similar to Elsa and Mulan personality rather than Anna and Rapunzel. You could even keep the seven friends but make them people who have already given up their wishes so they're basically just miserable and Asha has to help them. Simon could still have his betrayal but add onto why he wants to be Magnifico's knight. He could be a friend that has a crush on Asha so he wants to become a knight to impress and protect her I would also change Asha's color palette and name. Purple reminds me too much of Rapunzel and Isabella. I wish they stuck with the orange red color palette from the concept art. In my rewrite I would also name her Luna instead of Asha since Luna means moon and the movie is about stars Also why is the kingdom of wishes called Rosas that means Roses it would make more sense if the kingdom was called Estrellas which literally means Stars.
And if they really wanted that colour palette they could have had her switch colours, she starts with these colours and then changes them to symbolise the change and growth that she is been through the story (Sorry for bad English, it's not my first language)
I definitely prefer this than the actual movie. It would've been so much better if they kept star boy instead of ripoff Nintendo character. Making both king and queen evil and make Luna/Asha thier biological daughter Making her an actual princess. You should be a writer
I love how the song At All Cost is clearly from when starboy was still in concept. Like have you heard the demo they literally said the words love but changed it to promise for the final version. I listened to the movie version before seeing the movie and I bet you can imagine my confusion at what is clearly a love song being sang between a grown man and teenage girl. Disney freaking wasted Chris Pine
What do you mean straight up evil? Bro has PTSD from when his original kingdom was ransacked and pillaged. He panics when he notices someone else is using magic in the kingdom. Fearing it is a challenger. So he resorts to Dark Magic that takes him over. Magnifico is the fallen hero of this story. Asha is the evil greedy witch.
Exactly! He still protects the wishes, whether they’re vague or harmful. It’s called a deal/contract. They willingly gave him their wishes! Contracts don’t break when it’s not something that can be given. He owns the wishes. Disney really did fumble him
The script could have been clever and revealed that Magnifico lied about his backstory and he was the reason the original kingdom was destroyed. Built a new one with a wish system designed to make the people rely on him and not question his rule. But sure Disney, make the villain the most sympathetic and relateable character of the bunch.
@@ripple_snacplayer8593 it would’ve been much better if everyone became depressed without the passion and the drive which those wishes came of, but only one dude was really affected by it. I can’t remember his name but it was the dude who became the all-mighty knight.
I used to think that the worst thing Magnifico did was keep the wishes even if he knew he wasn’t going to grant them, then I remembered that the people willingly gave up their wishes knowing the catch. So yeah he really didn’t do anything wrong
Asha is basically the storybook equivalent of a Bank Robber Especially since the opening states Magnifico PROTECTS wishes & only promises to maybe grant them, like a Bank protects your valuables & maybe invest in your portfolio
The peanuts movie was also a anivisery movie , and unlike the this movie, it actually fells like a celebration of its respective ip, and it ACTUALLY honors its creator with great animation. Wish just fells like a cash grab that just uses “reference “ as a way to honor its anniversary. Not even a message from Walt Disney himself at the end.
I cannot believe that a movie about wishes has absolutely nothing to say about them. "Be careful what you wish for." is a tagline on the poster and NOT A THING IN THE MOVIE?! Magnifico mentions once a thing about wishes being vague and that being bad, but it's not expanded upon, nor does it come back in a meaningful way. What is a bad wish? According to the movie, all wishes are valid and important. What if somebody wishes for someone else to fall in love with them? Does that violate someone else's autonomy or free will? What if someone's wish directly contradicts someone else's wish? Which one takes priority? What if someone wishes for a bunch of people to die? Any problem with that? I can't believe in this movie so packed with references, that they didn't make Magnifico's rules for wishes the same as the Genie's. No killing, love, or raising the dead. It was RIGHT THERE! A movie THEY made over 30 years ago has more to say about wishes than this movie. What if, instead of Asha's stupid motivation with her grandfather's wish, she wanted her father to come back to life? She was sort of bummed about it in a nonspecific way. That would be something Magnifico would be very justified in not granting. That would give a reason for the whole memory erasure thing. If a person is so focused on a wish that's impossible to grant, it's better for them to forget it than have it eat away at them from the inside. The whole Magnifico thing doesn't work. Where did this evil book come from? Did he fight and defeat evil sorcerers in his past? We don't know! It would be more compelling if it was HIS book and he USED to be evil, but sealed it away and chose to live and rule for good. That would explain the book's draw it has for him and in his breakdown of paranoia and pessimism, he turns to it again and falls into villainy. The movie as it is now gaslights him into being the villain, it's so weird! And why does the Queen know about oil on the fingers prevents evil or whatever and not the King? She and Doc both read the book too and are fine! One more thing, how old are Magnifico and the Queen supposed to be? He founded the kingdom right? Unless there's some magical longevity nonsense we don't see, than Rosas has only been a kingdom for like 50 years max. That would mean Grandpa moved to and gave up his wish when he was in his 50's. That's a long time to be failing as a musician.
Not going to read everything you wrote, BUT, what if the star at one point is some kind of bad guy that destroyed magnificos land? The star is able to grant literily every wish. Maybe one of those wishes is what caused his world to I guess get destroyed. That would be why he's against the star and wants to protect wishes and is very picky on what wishes to grant.
That's actually a good point.... He's not a villain, but he's not a good person... He's complicated, like us "mortals" and instead of helping him like the old princess would do they basically kill3d him. Maybe that's why so many people liked him and portrayed him as the hero.
The fact that people actually FORGOT about when this film first came out in threatens really says a lot about Disney’s current state. Especially since it was on their 100th Year Anniversary. And they got one upped by an Adam Sandler movie of all things! 💀💀
Magnifico is treated as unreasonable for saying that the granddad's wish of wanting to write songs could be dangerous Then at the end, he's defeated by a song, proving he was 100% right.
Sabino didn't want to write songs. That wasn't what he wished for. He wanted to inspire the next generation, granting his wish would have meant mass mind control. Magnifico was right not to grant it. It is an inherently harmful wish.
Yeah like wth were they thinking giving an old man’s voice to a baby goat in a onesie? Even tho I’d also rather him not speak, giving him a kids voice would have been so much cuter.
The song At All Cost was originally going to be a love song, it would have worked if they went with the star boy story. Like Asha and Star Boy are singing their love for each other.
Magnifico is a TERRIBLE villain. He's not a villain. The movie immediately gaslights you into thinking he was an obnoxious crazy person the whole time. He was a great king that everyone loved and then he just instantly goes evil and uses a cursed book for no reason at all. He's a shitty twist villain that they want you to think is a straight up bad guy.
Here is a rewrite: asha is the real villain and greedy fir wishes but in the end magnifico tells the truth but asha is too evil to listen but she gets stuck inside the mirror instead
15:36 thanks for pointing this out. The outrage generated from this clip was actually because the trailer for the movie was poorly edited. It makes it seem like Asha is demanding everyone's wishes be granted.
The song "This Is The Thanks I Get" wasn't bad bad, but it feels like it was made for those parents who always talk in your ear like: "I carried you for 9 months, I changed your diapers and and fed you, I sent you to school and let you live here for free and this is how you are going to treat me? This is the thanks I get??"
@@mehnah5033 hearing him sing the song about his daughter rather than a kingdom of people he's SUPPOSED TO take care of would have been so much better even if the lyrics are weird.
Imagine if the movie had a bee movie twist where they realized what they were fighting for the whole movie wasn't the right idea, and how the world falls apart when everyone gets their wish, and then it ends with a madoka like twist where Asha wishes that wishes never existed and erases her existance as Asha and becomes the fairy godmother
The music is really where they lost me. If I was asked to come up with a concept to represent 100 years of Disney, I'd have started with the music and built up with there. I'd use a wide variety of styles, from the 1920s and 30s era, to the Sherman brothers era, to the Broadway style era of the Disney Renaissance. I'd even find a way to reference park songs like Grim Grinning Ghosts. In fact, I'd just basically make it a Kingdom Hearts style story but traveling to different musical worlds.
And for what it's worth, there's already a Silly Symphony short about musical islands (one's classical and one's jazz), so that could be a place to start.
I feel so bad for the song writer because I heard she was only given like 3 weeks to think of the songs and was given a vague concept of the story. I'd write bad songs too if I was given such a short writing time I wonder was songs she would've wrote if given the time.
@@BlackCherryLimonadeshit no wonder they are bad. Like what where they thinking. You think they would have given them time for everything. I heard they had a full script written. Before the execs forced them to rewrite the whole thing into the trash we got.
Little easter egg: When Magnifico is sucked into the staff, you see a glimpse of the face in The Mirror from Snow White and the seven dwarfs. Loved the vid, as always!
Wish is the perfect example of targeting only one type of audience. As a wise man once said, “A children’s story that can only be enjoyed by children is not a good children’s story in the slightest.” -C.S. Lewis
Thank you!!!! I get SO tired of hearing people hand wave terrible children’s/family films as alright because “it wasn’t made for you!” Pixar and Laika have proven you can create content that children adore and still have the film be enjoyable to all audiences. Good storytelling is good storytelling.
One of Disneys ideas was to make star into a prince that the main character would fall in love for, and the king and queen were both evil. Which I think would’ve been a better idea
Asha was actually suppose to have a love story with Star, who would have had a human form,so it's possible that song her and Magnifco sing to the wishes was actually meant for her and Star.
What’s worse, the producer gave us the concept art, all of it and Plotlines that were removed…..Each and EVERY SINGLE ONE was better that what’s we got 😑, For one the star was actually gonna be a prince (wholesome love interest), and The KING was SUPPOSED TO HAVE AN EVIL QUEEN, we could’ve gotten an evil power COUPLE BUT NOOOO!!!
ikkkkk I rewrote it. I was so looking forward to this movie! Really sad it turned out the way it did… but all’s good cuz I got to work on a project I never thought I would (a Disney movie rewrite) 😅😂
Disney has become way too comfortable with themselves. The reason they thrived in the first place was because they strived to outdo their competitors. Now they simply just “buy” their competition whenever they feel like it. Someone once said *”without criticism or pressure from others, there can be no improvement.”* And that really is true, Disney has become lazy and comfortable with themselves and everyone sees it. They may believe for now that they are invincible, but eventually they will find out they’re not and the cycle will start all over again. This is a season that will eventually pass and believe it or not I want Disney to succeed by making changes.
The saying “restrictions breed creativity” is so on point when discussing Disney. They used to be a company that broke the mold, took risks, and had competitors that pushed them to constantly up their game and consider new ways to animate and tell stories. Now, as you pointed out, they’re just set on buying every company and banking on nostalgia through cold, corporate movies that don’t understand why the original was so beloved (and often criticize the original, like the new Snow White movie; Snow, like Cinderella, was strong because she remains gentle, kind, and empathetic in the face of adversity, but Disney treats her like she was some weak, powerless, oppressed female figure and has sought to “right” that wrong in the most pandering, tone deaf, and disrespectful way). It’s kind of crazy to look at the sheer amount of sequels and remakes they’re pumping out when Walt Disney himself was staunchly against sequels of any kind because he believed there were always new and wonderful worlds to create and explore. It’s honestly sad, but mostly it’s pretty disgusting.
Fun fact, the song "At All Cost" in the movie WAS a love song Disney had intended for Asha and starboy. They swapped "Love as one does" with "Promise as one does" 💀 its funny I never saw the movie, I got introduced by animatics of this song using the demo version. Immediately fell in love, it reminded me of old disney. Then I found the song in the movie between Asha and Magnifico??? No thank you, only listening to the demo version 😭 it creates a whole Disney scene in my head listening to it. Love flows nicely with the song ❤
To be fair, the way they framed that scene of Asha asking him to grant more wishes made it seem like she thought all wished should be granted. It made Magnifico seem like he was calm and reasonable and Asha was mildly unhinged. It’s also kinda a legit thing where a miracle isn’t a miracle if it happens to everyone. I can see his pov of wanting to make sure that he didn’t grant bad wishes or wishes that could put their home at risk. I still don’t really understand his change to evil. It doesn’t really make sense to me. She asked for more wishes to be granted and it was like that one suggestion drove him off a ledge. It was weird. Then again, I didn’t watch the full thing because it looked dumb and the animation looked unfinished.
He turned evil because centuries of his Magic corrupting him built up and the pressures of ruling a kingdom for centuries. And his wife knew it. The King could've been completely fine if his wife tried to get him simple counseling which, he probably would've agreed too based off his character. Everything he says and does up until his corruption paints him as a reasonable person, willing to do what others want as long as he thinks it's safe
They only praise him for his wish granting abilities and his handsome face. He's running a kingdom and giving away houses and making jobs and keeping the borders secure by himself. Dude doesn't even ask for rent. And all his subjects credit him for is what he can do for them. Heck, he even says that the apprentices only take a few months before ASKING for things. Then Asha comes in and ASKS for her gramp's wish to be granted even before becoming an apprentice. The people willingly go and live in his kingdom and willingly give up their wishes in exchange for stability and a monthly chance that the king will grant one's desire without them having to lift a finger of effort to make it happen. Honestly, those people are ungrateful as fuck
I didn't consider Magnifico a villain by any means... Like, if anything, he is the textbook-definition of what a good king is: A ruler that puts his land and people first over himself. He does keep the wishes and make people forget about it, yes, but it's honestly understandable. If he would give them back and only grant selective ones would it seem like he plays favours, increasing the risk of a riot. And what does he do with these wishes? Does he destroy them? Does he use them for his own gain? No. He puts them under the roof of his laboratory or whatever and "protects them like all the others". Like... Even if the wish was to conquer the world, he still keeps it. He does not make a difference here. Also, given his backstory, where he lost basically everything, it's only understandable that he wants to keep his kingdom safe, so he doesn't take any chances here when granting wishes. Someone could wish to become a master swordfighter, but this could result in them using this new ability to harm others. He never even askes for anything in return. And the only time he does (Ask people to report suspicious activities), people demand a wishing ceremony, breaking him, because this was the final drop after constantly giving. This is some actual character here. And a nuanced one at that. And meanwhile are we supposed to root for a character, whos only goal was to have her grandfather's wish granted. And when it was denied for justified reasons, she basically started a french revolution, took over power and probs killed the kingdom within 5 days after this movie ended because granting everyone's wish is a bad idea. Like... When Magnifico says his wish is to have an apprentice to teach and offering that to her, she straight up ignored it because grandpa... And this piece of cardboard is supposed to be the protagonist while the person with actual personality is meant to be the bad guy. If that doesn't yell "Disney", I don't know what else would... Great 100th anniversary special....
he is the greatest king if he exist. Unlike most kings where they can range to esoteric and bizzare but still good, to an absolute megalomaniac. This one, He is somewhat transparent, Is very lenient and also manage to make someone live a century longer in a late medieval kingdom which people's lifespan rarely get over 60 if being a levy doesn't kill you many diseases and theres only rudimentary hygiene. and especially theres no feudal system, literally a feudal system is common, no peasants, no lords, no serfdom, just monarchy. isn't that rare in medieval and rarely goes well? like dude this is the most safest kingdom imo in all fictions
That’s an insult to Sofia the first like how dare you compare this trash to Sofia the first like wish wishes (pun intended) they could be like Sofia the first
At least, Sofia battles MANY villains in her show; Princess Ivy, Crysta, Miss nettle the fairy before the big menace. She defeated them with her friends which is a good message about teamwork. Also, the princess is a likable character. She is kind, cute, brave, an excellent singer and is doing everything to save her kingdom. I like her 🙂
Disney has just completely forgotten about the saying *”quality over quantity.”* Did you know that the writers at Disney were once given 6 whole months to write out a story? Why have film companies just completely forgotten about that it doesn’t matter how long it takes to make film, all that matters is that the film turns out good! If a movie is good, it’s likely that people are gonna watch it! Many people today don’t care as much anymore about deadlines, THEY JUST WANNA SEE A GOOD MOVIE!! Plus it gets people all the more hyped up when the movie does eventually come out! The only way Disney can save themselves now is if they just stop, take a step back, and reevaluate everything and start fresh. Because what they’ve been doing is getting exhausting to watch.
Hate how the concept art and story was better but Disney don't want to take risk anymore and gave us this garbage movie that was supposed to be the algamation of Disney when it feels like just a basic movie 🙃 They should just stick with her being the actual daughter of King Magnifico and the Queen who are evil and Star Boy being her love interest like a literal good vs evil couple that would be so much better 😭
Honestly I wouldn’t have minded if Encanto was delayed and made the 100th anniversary movie tho Encanto was basically the 50th anniversary movie(also compared to literally every other Disney princess Asha did nothing)
What would’ve fixed the story is if the King was just a stern ruler who chose which wish to grant (no mind erasing or magic stealing), and Asha is the one to demand all wishes be granted because she’s young and impatient. When he gives a reasonable response for why he shouldn’t grant all wishes, she acts impulsive and tries to steal the magic for her grandfather which releases Star. When Star starts granting everyone’s wishes (other than talking animals and big veggies) it causes random chaos, and when the king goes to clean everything up it makes him look like the villain. When Asha and her friends try to stop him, he shows her all the destruction the random wishes have caused. As Asha starts to think about her actions, one of her friends turn on her to steal the power and become the real villain. But with some quick thinking Asha traps them a mirror, saving the day. The King cleans up the mess, Asha learns to be more patient and not every wish should be granted. The End. It not much but I tried.
the moral lesson is far better than wish. Many people said that asha does not want all wishes granted but to give others the freedom to do so. For me instead of fighting the king Asha should look for ways to grant her grandfather wish, have a long adventure with him etc
The sad thing is she destroyed the kingdom because she selfishly wanted to grant a wish that technically was already granted. He created his son who inspired his granddaughter.
The weirdest thing to me about this movie was how underpublicized it was. I'm no Disney fan, but usually whenever they drop a new movie, my RU-vid ads are slammed for at least a month leading up to the release. I had no idea this movie existed AT ALL until I was in a movie theater to watch the fnaf movie and saw a poster for it up on the wall 💀 the gracious explanation is Disney didn't wanna overcommercialize it, or wanted it to be for fans that would know about it anyways. Imo, the far more likely reason is they knew it was gonna flop and they wanted to distance themselves from it early/cut their losses. Similar to what they did to poor lucasfilms' strange magic - that movie was actually really well done and deserved better, but Disney just murdered it when they bought out the studio bc it didn't match their bland movie recipe and released it with no advertising & the worst movie poster possible. crooks
@@grammy_hnng yea man I think it's a well-made cute movie that deserves some love tbh 😭😭 like obviously there's some spots where the animation was... questionable... but I actually loved the character designs for the most part and thought most of the animation was gorgeous. I really liked the fairy designs, I didn't think they were accidentally uncanny so much as purposefully inhuman, and I really prefer that look to mini-human tinker bell type fairies. Maybe I'm just biased from the books I read as a kid, but the unnatural proportions just clicked and made them better imo. It's a really unique movie & style and I feel bad that it got overlooked like it did 😭😭strange magic gang rise up. Also like ngl that movie is SO funny to me in so many places. I don't know how they did it, but the mouse in the cage looks like it has the weight of humanity's sins behind its eyes and it sends me into hysterics every time I see it. Evil Elvis boyfriend is very funny as well imo & the strange magic sequence restored my faith in humanity as a whole. I may just be a sappy mf but I do love that movie yea 😭
@@grammy_hnng that's very true, I hate sunny. sad little man simp 💀 + like ngl he looks way older than dawn imo which makes it all ickier. I just try to ignore him and appreciate everything else 😭
i asked both of my parents about it and neither of them had heard of it at all. and i asked about it very recently, several months after its release 💀i myself had only known about it because i got maybe 3 youtube ads and everybody was shitting on it. wouldnt blame them for being ashamed to market this pos, but then again, they seem more than happy to sell every single piece of merch they can make. im sad this is the disney kids are growing up with now.
I’m pretty sure that it’s one of the only things remaining from the original plot where Asha had a romance with a magical star that took on the shape of a boy. I think that this coupled with the fact that both the King and Queen were going to be evil would have been so much better. 12:42
15:33 but thats the point.. if the old guy DID want to create an angry mob and his wish was given back he would just do it himself, and if someone would have an unubtainable wish like having their pet live forever, their WILLINGLY given wish would make them not be heartbroken when it doesnt happen as explained in the movie.. so in conclusion, if you have seen the movie you would know people give their wish to magnifico willingly.
Velvet and Veneer CARRIED that movie to the point every time they were on screen I felt like I was watching a different movie altogether, they deserved to be in something less uh, corporate and meh, LMAO. Cuz nobody asked for a Trolls 3. XD
@@cintronproductions9430atleast trolls 3 is better than wish, and trolls 3 makes me feel more hyped even tho it’s too predictable than wish still, I would rather prefer trolls 3 than wish
"I let you live here for free and I don't charge you rent" I don't think Disney realized how contradictory that song lyric was. Also, it doesn't make any goddamn sense how he's singing about not getting enough praise when he has a whole ass kingdom who loves him. This could have been a great movie, but damned if Disney doesn't know what that is
I wouldn't even give Magnifico a wish in the first place. Why would you? When there's no absolute guarantee it'll come true, I'd just keep it to myself.
Although I haven’t seen the movie, Asha and King Magnifico’s dynamic reminds me a lot of the dynamic between Miles Morales and Miguel O’Hara in SpiderMan:Across the Spiderverse if it was done wrong (since we see Miguel’s backstory to show that Miles could be wrong which makes the conflict more compelling).
about Magnifico's song, and how it comes right after people seen him as a god in my eyes that is not really correct that song, came right after people started asking questions about the wishes, and his method of ruling, overwhelming him
Speaking of the music, I am not a theatre nerd, but I was and still am always a band nerd. The scores from their past disney music, especially their princesses, were AMAZING!! I would have loved combinations and motifs from them in their music than the vague pop songs they gave us. Plus, it's another way to give us easter eggs without it affecting too much of the story.
Magnifico isn't even a villain. He's a governor, kinda narcissistic but with common sense. Then he becomes evil because he was POSSESSED by the EVIL MAGIC FORBIDDEN BOOK.
I'll say it: Princess and the Frog was a much better tribute to Disney's past than Wish. 1. It's a traditionally animated movie in a time when everyone was embracing cgi. 2. It's a story about a young woman going through a magical adventure with talking animals and singing. 3. It's a musical written by people with actual experience writing musicals. 4. It has a scary and cool villain. 5. It has romance. 6. It offers commentary on the idea of wishes and dreams and hard work. 7. It has references to older Disney movies. The act of wishing on stars, the origin for the second star to the right, the flying carpet and Pumba easter eggs in the opening, the ball set up, and probably lots of others that I'm not remembering.
Magnifico is a victim. He has PTSD from seeing his family and his home get destroyed. He has every right to not grant wishes he deems as potentially dangerous. He's the one running the show, he's the one who studied his whole life to learn magic, he gets to choose what wishes get granted. And along comes this teenager who doesn't know anything about anything, and she wants to overthrow the kingdom for that? She's throwing a toddler tantrum and destroyed a utopia, all because she demanded special treatment and doing literally nothing to earn it. Also, once Magnifico gets possessed, he fails to be the same character. *_Magnifico, is, a, victim._* And the movie treats him as evil for it? Great message Disney, that's not messed up at all.
The fact that this movie was 10 years in the making is a complete joke. Obviously this was paving the way for the whole When You Wish Upon a Star theme that's been so very prominent in many Disney but somewhere during production they completely changed their values and what the think the fans want to see and shat this out instead
So, I was talking with my friend about how this movie could have been better. Imagine if King Magnifico got his power from Chernabog instead of just… having it.
In the “evil” part of ‘this is the thanks I get’ that background music just doesn’t fit the theme “THIS IS THE THANKS I GET?!” Mixed with “do do do do, do do do do,”
Magnifico: Yo heres a good point! Asha: Who cares? I'm the main character lol Magnifico: Oh shit well forget my good point I'll just turn fully evil *Magnifico makes someone sad Asha: Oh no! You made someone sad! You're SO evil! He's SO powerful! What could POSSIBLY stop him from making everyone sad??? *Stops him with a bookshelf
Tbh I still hate its still receiving money in the box office Is disney really trying to make it stay in the cinema longer Thats probably illegal and it shows how desperate they are for this movie when its a lost cause
You can FEEL the corporate meddling oozing from every part of this movie... And its _especially_ obvious after you learn what they had originally planned for the movie.
They could’ve gone from 2D animation and then after Star shows up swap to 3D showing that the world is “fuller” now. Asha could even comment she’s never seen so much dimension in the world or some other cute meta joke.
How is he just an evil guy in the first scene he's in he's just a reasonable ruler asha is mad cause he doesn't grant every wish but can we all acknowledge that not all wishes are gonna be worth granted? He has to rule a kingdom that's not gonna be simple he's running a kingdom without charging anyone and he has to make sure the economy can thrive and can you imagine how chaotic it he granted every wish in the entire kingdom?
Even to the point of giving the dreams back think of the turmoil and resentment the ppl getting their dreams back would cause think of it like this thought "rhe king is literally capable of granting every wish why would he take mine only to give it back instead of just granting it?, fuck it let's revolt "
Star could have been named Evangeline (ray, the firefly's, gf), because in princess and the frog there was a star named evangeline that others wish upon in hopes of having their dreams come true.
Such a good videos as always ❤ you are so underrated! I really love your content! Seriously I would have love to have a 2d animated movie for the 100th anniversary, but thank you so much for uploading!
He was beyond well-adjusted. He was practically a saint. He founded his own kingdom so he could take in refugees. He gave them a safe place to live and provided for them while demanding nothing in return. He even allows literally every single one of his citizens to petition him for a wish. He's obviously not exploiting them because his "villain song" is about how he feels exploited. He expresses early on that he feels like people just use him, don't actually care about him, and he was proven 100% right. When he got corrupted, no one even tried to help him. The abandoned him without a second thought, threw him into a dungeon to be tortured, and moved on to the next person who promised to grant their wishes. To add insult to injury, the only reason he was corrupted was because he was trying to protect his people. He sensed an unknown and powerful magic with the potential to destroy Rosas and turned to the book so he could save his people from what he thought was a threat. He wasn't hatching some evil scheme when he turned to the book. He was staring at the burnt tapestry from his homeland and vowing not to let that happen to Rosas.
@mLernen Yeah, everyone in this movie not named Magnifico is a terrible person. His wife knows he's corrupted, and she knows that the only reason he is corrupted is because he was trying to protect his kingdom and its people. Yet, not only does she not try to help him, not only does she not grieve for him, she calls him an "it" and locks him away in a dark dungeon to experience endless darkness and loneliness while she takes over the kingdom that he built.
Fun fact: the duet WAS a love song. It was supposed to be sung by Asha and Star boy. But they cut him completely out and replaced him with a marketable plushy.
@@LukaZibar I don't think they're saying they dislike the show. At least, that's not the vibe I was getting from the comment. They were just pointing out that in Hazbin Hotel, the guy named Valentino is a violent, controlling, abusive rapist. And in Wish, the goat named Valentino is an extremely annoying and unhelpful character, (though I thought he was kind of cute when he didn't talk). These two characters who share the exact same name both suck, albeit for very different reasons. Basically: if I had a nickel every time a character named Valentino was absolutely terrible, I'd have two nickels. Which isn't a lot, but weird that it's happened twice.
@user-en6px3og2l No I love Hazbin Hotel, I’m just saying that Valentino is just absolutely awful (as a person, which means he was written well for who he’s meant to be)
