Very good review thanks. I only recently discovered Wishbone Ash, they went under my radar back in the day for some unknown reason while I was a massive fan of 10CC/ Jethro Tull & Hawkwind, Thin Lizzy as well. I’d love this box set but it deserves to be owned by the real hardcore fans.

Finally got to see Wishbone Ash in Houston back in 2015, Z.Z. Top was playing a show about 5 miles away from the club they were playing in, the championship boxing match was being shown in all of the sports bars so the crowd wasn't as big as it should have been but there were still a lot of people there, they played all the great old songs and a lot from their later albums Blue Horizons and Elegant Stealth, fantastic show. The band hung out with around 30 or 40 of us after the show for a good while also. This was my farewell party as I moved from Houston not long after that show and it was a great time.

Hi Phil my introduction to Argus was initially Blowin Free. What a great song. Then buying Live Dates. Side one is almost all of side two of Argus. The songs and music have a mystical almost spiritual quality. Getting the album eventually I discovered the rest. Rare to find an album almost perfect from start to finish. Only saw them once at Reading 75. Amazing show.

Thank you for this review. When I first bought this record 50 years ago, I got stuck on the first side. Rather than turning the record over, I just had to keep playing side one over and over and over, numerous times. I just couldn't believe it. Then finally, I got to side two. I thought, wow, what a find. I quickly put it down on a cassette, so I could listen to it in the car. I started playing guitar in fall of 71, so this album was a godsend of inspiration to me. Bless em' all. By the way, the copy of "Argus" that came out earlier in the big box set, does contain the 3 previously released songs from Memphis, as well, also it's the Martin mix too. Glad they put that UFO back on the back of the jacket too. Thx. (just thought I'd mention, I love "Wishbone Four" also)

@@NowSpinningMagazine Hello again Phil. Just a note here. Since the guys are going back in the archives here. I have always wondered if the rest of the show in Leicester, at the De Montfort Hall, from June 14, 1971 could ever be available to be cleaned up, mixed, and released. This is the show where the live version of "Where Were You Tomorrow?" was recorded, that wrapped up the "Pilgrimage" album. Hope this is sitting on a shelf somewhere, just waiting.

Hi Phil: Thanks for putting this together - great review. I am a huge WA fan and bought this boxed set too (#500). The one thing I was hugely disappointed about - which you, and no one to date has commented on - is that Ted Turner had no input to the book. Given the importance of a 50th anniversary, I had to ask myself why. I know that Ted has moved in different musical directions, and is creating new music with his wife Majella. Maybe he didn't want to be involved because he felt that that WA is in his past that he would rather not revisit. I can't believe that Madfish would not have reached out to Ted. Because Ted did not take part, is this why Laurie was asked to contribute? Laurie honestly says in the booklet that he was initially reluctant when he was asked. My view is that they could have still used Laurie's contribution, but still think it is a rather sad and glaring omission that Ted did not contribute.

Hi Russ, thank you for watching. I interviewed Andy Powell very soon after this review ( which you can find on this channel and on the website) and he was very complimentary about Martins contributions. Martins mix of Argus was also the one used for the CD in the box set. I know Martin was heavily involved in the Vintage Years box as well. I have reached out to Martin to see if he would like to talk about the Argus Box Set but not heard back yet. Phil

@@NowSpinningMagazine: Hi Phil. Thanks for responding. It is great that Andy was complimentary about Martin's contributions: maybe the ice is beginning to thaw; which is what alot of us would want. BTW: I agree with you about Martin's mix of Argus being the best version. He has put alot of time effort and love into not only Argus but all of the WA projects, including the Vintage Years box set and Distillations. I also know some years ago he mentioned really wanting to do a remix of the Wishbone 4 album, but did know where the original master tapes were held. I would love to hear a mix of this album that sounds like what they had in their minds when it was recorded. I can also recommend Martin's "Written in the stars" album if you have heard it or got a copy. As for Ted not contributing to the 50th anniversary Argus boxset, if you do get a chance to chat to Martin, maybe you can ask him the question, because he has a great relationdship with Ted. Although, I think he may well just confirm what I have already said. Thanks again and I will take a look at your interview with Andy.

This set is aimed at me but funds are short and as much as I'd love to have it I'm afraid it's a bridge too far at this moment in time. Argus is and has always been in my top 5 albums of all time, sharing space with the likes of Physical Graffiti and Santana III, I have bought it 4 times and still have my original 51 year old vinyl and a couple of cd versions, do I want it? Yes, can I afford it at the moment? No! Maybe fortune will smile down on me this weekend otherwise I'll wait for the 75th Anniversary Edition...oh wait!

You can't listen to absolutely every band that you come across and, unfortunately, I made the mistake of being almost completely ignorant of bands like Wishbone Ash and Jethro Tull during the 1970's and 1980's when I was listening (and still am) to Yes, Uriah Heep, Led Zeppelin, Whitesnake, Deep Purple, etc. etc. I started to get into those two bands (and a few others) about 10-15 years ago when I just got a bit "bored" with bands like Queensryche, Dream Theater and Nightwish, who were just feeling far too "mechanical" and over-produced, and I went back into "the best decade in music ever" in the 1970's and discovered albums like "Argus" and Tull's "Thick As A Brick" that just have such a more "organic" feel to them. When "The Vintage Years" came out a few years ago, I took it as an opportunity to get a huge amount of Wishbone Ash "in one hit" and was not disappointed - equally so for Nazareth's "Loud And Proud" box set, another band I'd shamefully ignored during that same period. Now I have come across Phil's review here, I've just had to order this too - "Argus" has really become a favourite of mine over the past decade and a half, and these boxed sets are becoming "a bit of an addiction" now!
@NowSpinningMagazine

Hi Terry, the Vintage Years Box Set is a high water mark in box sets for me. It was the most I had ever spent on a box set but it was worth every penny! Phil

@@NowSpinningMagazine I agree, money well spent! I am tempted by the Caravan box set too - I know little of their music but what I have heard I do enjoy. I missed out on the Steve Hillage one unfortunately, but I did get the Nazareth, Van Der Graaf Generator and ELP ones - and the smaller Humble Pie and Hawkwind ones.

I bought the Loud and Proud Nazareth set also, my favorite band ever. We had one great radio station here in B'ham, Al so I was introduced to Wishbone Ash Nazareth, Tull, etc etc back in the mid to late 70s
@terrydaktyllus1320
@terrydaktyllus1320 Год назад
@@Texama57 If I have any regrets in life then it's not discovering a lot of bands earlier than I actually did - I grew up Uriah Heep, Deep Purple, Yes, Led Zeppelin, Nektar, AC/DC, Chicken Shack, Sparks, punk and NWOBHM and I missed out on Genesis, Nazareth, Wishbone Ash, Jethro Tull and even The Beatles for many years. I got into progressive metal like Queensryche (seeing them do Operation Mindcrime live on the Empire tour at the Hammersmith Odeon in 1990 is still one of the greatest live gigs I've ever witnessed), Fates Warning and Dream Theater and then symphonic/gothic metal a bit later with Lacuna Coil and Nightwish. But, all of a sudden, it all felt too "mechanical" and over-produced and I decided I needed the more "organic" sounds of the 1970's and "returned to my roots" to listen to bands I'd missed first time around. One of the most criminally underrated bands that this country has ever produced is Slade because once you get behind their singles into the album deep cuts, you realise what an amazing group of songwriters those four actually were. I was lucky enough to be at their infamous reunion gig at Reading Festival in 1980 (probably the best gig of all time I have been at) and I should have got into their material more then, rather than just their singles stuff.
