What’s the effect of phytoestrogens on your estrogens level? Could it be that they can be wishy-washy and raise it or lower it? If so, how can that be? What determines the effect of phytoestrogens on your estrogen levels? I’ll explain all of these things in this wishy-washy tutorial on the effect of phytoestrogens in menopause.

I’m so grateful I found you! I know I’m behind but I’m watching like 3 videos a day . Boy was I ignorant I consider myself healthy with the exception of the hot flashes which have gotten worse and I’ve just taken herbal supplements but I’m more open to go with a physician gynecologist now thank you.

I have a question about eating phytoestrogens if I want to take HRT - Should I avoid eating soy, flax and garbanzos so they won't interfere with the binding of the Estrodiol that my doctor just prescribed? Thank you for all your wonderful information, I discovered your videos a few months back and have watched virtually all of them (some jumping around in the beginning but then went back to watch in order). Since then I have abandoned my fear of soy and HRT, started drinking soy milk a couple of weeks ago and finally was able to get in to my doctor to ask about HRT. She prescribed estradiol patches 0.025mg and micronized progeterone 100mg (she insisted on starting me out on the lowest possible dose!) Since it is such a low dose, I certainly want to get as much benefit out of it as possible and don't want my receptor sites clogged up with weak phytoestrogens, hence my question.

Dr. Barbie, this helps me as a vegetarian woman in her reproductive years. After avoiding soy for years now because I thought it was effecting my PMS experiences and cramping during my cycle, I can safely add them back as desired. It never really made much of a difference anyway. I also had my daughter avoid soy thinking that it may effect her puberty. ❤️

Wishy washy effects. True. Or none at all. The right levels vary for every woman in relation to their optimal hormone levels that should be determined by a special blood analysis, not just a common blood test. I have tried phytoestrogens and several herbs. At least I learned in your video that they can hardly increase estrogens level to be dangerous.
@MenopauseTaylor
@MenopauseTaylor 7 лет назад
You are correct. Some women notice no effect at all from phytoestrogens.They're that weak. A special blood test is entirely optional. Remember, these are hormone levels that are typically fluctuating greatly during peri-menopause. For most women, they're a rollercoaster. If you were to draw your blood levels daily for a month, they'd be all over the place. So don't place too much importance on a blood test. I believe YOU more than I believe the blood test. If you have symptoms, I want you to feel better. I would not deny you something to alleviate your symptoms just because you drew your blood on a day when the labs were "normal."

Wow! A plethora of information. So strange how phytoestrogens seem to be ge/ting a bad rap. Doctors saying phytoestrogens are bad. I feel so blessed to be learning from you. Thank you. I now know why it didn't take long to see results from my estradiol vaginal cream. Who knew? I hear a lot about estrogen dominance as well which I had in 2016. The medical research seems to state to only take estrogen HRT for the shortest amount of time and the lowest dose. They do not explain how criticalmestrogen is to like everything in a female's body and not just menopause. I feel so misinformed by doctors and the internet.

@MenopauseTaylor
@MenopauseTaylor 4 года назад
Ariane, You sill have the receptors. The problem is that they are all empty once you lose your estrogen. Any bodily function that relied on estrogen starts to deteriorate. The same is true for any hormone deficiency: Insulin, thyroid, etc.

If I’m using pharmaceutical estrogen and if I also consume phytoestrogens, is there a chance phytoestrogens will occupy the spot of an estrogen receptor site.

Before I started HRT I was having hot flashes and night sweats every 10 minutes, as you can imagine it was awful, I did not have quality of life. Even on the hormones I still have what I call hot flushes. I have been on them for about 8 years and I tried coming off them a year ago but as soon as the flashes started coming on every 30 minutes I went back on them. Do you think I will ever be able to come off the hormones?

Hi, I gave mine time after I went off. Your body needs to adjust back to normal . I went through the same withdrawal. Was on them for about 5 years. I changed my diet some. Not sure it was that. Maybe I didn't need that much Soy milk and plant based stuff with estrogen. My hot flashes stopped. I just had lot's of moody upset sad crying times and vag dryness. Sure taking fun out of sex. Gee, can't do it everyday to keep it open or thinning, nor do I want to. Lol. Not sure this will get better.

Hopefully we can more info later on with Barbie. I book her book and she's got a cool name going.. Your German article translated for me in English. Will read it. Thanks
@MenopauseTaylor
@MenopauseTaylor 8 лет назад
It's impossible to know if you'll ever stop having hot flashes, Robin. And it's not imperative that you stop taking estrogen. Whether or not you can talk them forever is a very individual thing. You may find that you can decrease the dose very slowly over years until your hot flashes don't ruin your life. But don't just stop them cold turkey. It's obvious already that such an abrupt change will not work for you. It's also possible that you'll find a weaker form of estrogen that you can substitute for HRT if you so choose. But, again, there's no absolute rule that says you have to stop taking HRT at some point. Talk with your gynecologist or find a gynecologist that specializes in menopause. Be sure you tailor all your adjustments to YOU personally.

Hi Barbie. Can you give some input on Maca and menopause? Does it increase estrogen? Thank you:)
@MenopauseTaylor
@MenopauseTaylor 8 лет назад
Hey Gabby. Maca is considered to be a "famine food" with many nutrients that do not deteriorate for years when they are stored. It is used in the high Andes, and believed to be a fertility enhancer, although studies do not support that theory. It enhances fertility in women but not men. I'll be covering it.

So then phytoestrogens are safe for males to be consumed? And what about cow's colostrum estrogen (for males)? Also, can you combine pharmaceutical and phytoestrogens or better take the strong pharmaceutical estrogen and avoid the phytoestrogens as to not take up the receptors? I'm not clear on something and I'm hoping that you may be able to help. Is B-iest not a phytoestrogen? Toward the end of this video you compare phytoestrogen to bio-identical or pharma (which can also be bio-identical) so that makes me think that Bi-est (compounded, bio-identical) is not a phytoestrogen. I thought Bi-est was made from wild yam root.
@MenopauseTaylor
@MenopauseTaylor 2 года назад
BiEst is a compounded estrogen. It is made by a compounding pharmacy. And, because the compounding industry is completely unregulated, you never know what it consists of. When you were pre-menopausal, you had the three estrogens in the following ratios: Estrone 10% Estradiol 10% Estriol 80% The alternative medicine industry tries to reproduce this combination for post-menopausal hormone replacement even though you no longer need two of the three estrogens. So, instead of estradiol 100%, you will get one of two formulations that are made in huge batches: • Tri-Est contains all three estrogens in the same ratio as your body used to produce: o 10% Estrone, 10% estradiol, and 80% estriol. • Bi-Est contains two of the three estrogens rather than all three: o 0% estrone, 20% estradiol, and 80% estriol. Bi-Est is not capable of preventing heart attack, osteoporosis, or Alzheimer's.
@maryfelix1546
@maryfelix1546 2 года назад
why is it that chemical or pharma based chemicals are similar to human estrogen?
@MenopauseTaylor
@MenopauseTaylor 2 года назад
It's all about the molecular structure of the product. If it's the same molecular structure as human estrogen, then it's "bioidentical." If it isn't, it's "non-bioidentical." But the big misconception is that "bioidentical" is "better." It may be or it may not be. It all depends on the woman and what HER body prefers. "Bioidentical" has become a buzz marketing term. But your body doesn't care about buzz marketing terms.

I'm just wondering , can water fasting help to increase humane estrogen in our body.
@MenopauseTaylor
@MenopauseTaylor 8 лет назад
No, it can't. What it does is dehydrate you ... and that makes everything in your body more concentrated. But it does not increase the quantity of anything. Most people need to drink more water, not less.
@mytreasuredcreations
@mytreasuredcreations 8 лет назад
Menopause Barbie Water fasting means you don't eat any food and only drink water. It shouldn't dehydrate you if you are drinking plenty of it which is what someone does when they go on a water fast.
@MenopauseTaylor
@MenopauseTaylor 8 лет назад
Oops, my stake. I thought you meant restricting your water. If you think about it, the title "water fasting" is somewhat incorrect. Okay, I'll start over: Water fasting will do absolutely nothing for your hormone levels. It will affect your blood chemistry values quite a bit ... in an unfavorable way, though.

Menopause Barbie I have a friend whose doctor told her to use progesterone cream and stay away from soy and flaxseed because they have phytoestrogens. BUT she can eat all the meat, eggs and dairy she wants. How does that make sense? It doesn't according to what you just explained in this video. I'm plant based. I told her she was consuming more estrogen than I who eat a couple of tablespoons of flaxseeds a day, tofu once a week and plants in general every day. Can you clarify this? I sent her a couple of videos from Nutrition.org so she could check the facts and science.
@MenopauseTaylor
@MenopauseTaylor 8 лет назад
You're correct. She is getting higher hormone levels than you are. Maybe that's what she wants. But there's no question as to which hormones are stronger. Animal hormones are stronger than plant hormones.
@mytreasuredcreations
@mytreasuredcreations 8 лет назад
Menopause Barbie Her doctor was wanting her to lower her estrogen levels and increase her progesterone. Thus the cream. He was telling her to stay away from soy and flaxseed for that reason. When I told her she was consuming more estrogen eating eggs that flax she was stunned. :/ Then I sent her your videos. Nothing like education to help us make some informed decisions. :) Most doctors don't know much about nutrition. Which is a pity since it's one of the foundations for good health.

@MenopauseTaylor 8 лет назад
You can have a blood test to measure each hormone level individually. But it's entirely optional. You can certainly treat your symptoms without getting any testing for hormone levels. If you go to a Naturopath, they'll do the same testing on your saliva. It's easy, but less accurate. If you're post-menopausal, it will give you valuable information. If you're peri-menopausal, none of these tests will tell you much simply because, by definition, your hormones will be a complete rollercoaster, changing daily.

I definitely will, Sherry. And if you want to jump ahead, Chapter 22 in my book will give you a preview. Despite what most people believe, the vagina is the most problematic aspect of menopause for the majority of women.

Denise Fox I was dreading it too. But I began thinking ... There are certainly other pleasurable things in life. And our sex life is really ruled by our hormones. Think about it. Before puberty began there was no sexual desire. Scientific research has proven that some women on birth control pills lose their sex drive and have other sexual disfunctions. Once your natural hormones begin decreasing and find a new normal balance in menopause we might not want sex as much. There are other ways of showing and receiving love. Just a thought. No sex is not the end of life. :)

This is such a good discussion. I think every one of you makes a good point. And I think it's the very nature of sex typically involving someone else other than ourselves that makes it more of a problem for some women than for others. Face it: humans are the only animals (except apes) that have sex purely for pleasure rather than for reproduction. And human males have sex more for pleasure than for reproduction. So Mother Nature may have made us lose interest and receptivity for sex when we don't need it for reproductive purposes, and that doesn't suit the males of our species.

Thank you so much for this important clarification. I wasn't sure why at certains times of the month phytoestrogens seemed to affect me more (natural estrogen dominance due to perimenopause and phytoestrogens in the diet mean more cycstic acne...boo!). I am curius to know how you'd address the concept of slow estrogen metabolizers (gnentically speaking). If one has snp's that make them slow metabolizers (MTHFR, COMT, etc.) how would they proceed in deciding whether or not HRT is appropriate and if so, at which dosage? Should the prescribing doctor be made aware of this if not already...? In my understanding certain snp's create a higher risk for certain cancers, especially in combination with other snp's...

I'm assuming that you are using SNP as the acronym for Single Nucleotide Polymorphism. I know of no problems with slow metabolism causing problems for HRT use. To be specific about your own particular situation, you would need to see a geneticist who can map the specific genes that are affected. This would be the first step. Then, depending on what you discover form a genetic standpoint, you would take that information to your prescribing doctor so that he could tailor your prescription accordingly. For most women with SNP, there's no need to change the dosage or schedule of HRT.

I really like these darker colours on you, like the black top from one of the last tutorials and this dark green/blue one. I think you are a wintertype when it comes to colours. And beautiful hair as always. It is sometimes hard to understand everything because I am german. But I think the estrogens from soy etc. Are not dangerous for anyone, men and boys too?

Thank you for the compliment, Nina. And you are correct, soy is fine for everyone. Think abut the Japanese. They all eat it every day of their lives, and they're the longest-living people on earth. They also age the best.

So if I take estrogen or use estrogel and then eat a lot of soy (a LOT, I am vegan..) will I be shooting myself in the foot as they work against each other 😅
