Witcher Old World Review: Toss a Coin and a Review 

Phew…this needed a 4 square review for some balanced perspective. I just know some would have given this a 6 or 7

Great game, but needs the monster trail expansion to make it more enjoyable.

You actually ARE allowed to have an attribute more than one level above your current Witcher level. There's nothing stopping you from having a level 5 combat attribute while being a level 1 Witcher. Your Witcher level is only taken into account in regards to the location actions that level up your attribute for free. You can always visit a Witcher school and pay to increase one of your attributes (though you have to visit your particular school to pay to increase your specialty). But the four locations on the board that increase an attribute for free only let you increase it if the attribute is currently at or below your current Witcher level. If the attribute is above your Witcher level, you do not get the free attribute improvement.

Funny that you mention how different aspects feel like a video game. The combat is inspired by the Witcher 3 game, where combos of moves can create lots of damage. And dice poker was a side game you could play in Witcher 2 (Witcher 3 had a collectible card game you could play on the side called Gwent 😂).

Great review! Your thoughts about the game are pretty solid. I personally give base game a 7/10, but with Legendary Hunt it’s an 8/10, and with LH and Monster Trail a 9/10. Will you be reviewing the expansions as well?

Wanted to like this as I love the IP, but hated the combat unfortunately and really…what else is left. Sold it not to long ago. Hopefully Path of Destiny will be more my style.

I found dice poker to random with only one reroll. I just didn’t want to risk it anymore when gold is already tight.

The only bad thing about this is that some of the expansion content is a must-have. The base game is slightly shallow in depth. But I love this. It hits the theme really well.

This is my wife's favorite game, and personally l would give it 8.5 or 9. The only complain I have is the game length whit 3+ player's, as the story reading in almost every player turn, is time consuming. But as a 2 player game, its great. The Monsters Trail expansion is a must, as it make the monster fight more interesting.

What’s with Tom not being included is some of the most popular/kickstarted board games based on IPs? He was also missing from the Skyrim review. Would love to hear his perspective on these games based on IPs.

Correction : potions are not an expansion, bombs and mutagens are an expansion.

I love this game and with the expansions it's literally a top 10 game for AWHILE

This is a fantastic game. All the mechanics are great and battling monsters and each other is fun. We don't play any dungeon crawls and this is probably as close to it as I will get. Also really enjoy the solo mode in the expansion wild hunt

this review is puzzling as after first hour the game gets borderline boring. turns at best are repetive, there is almost nothing going on in this game like it has no point, locations on the map do not feel distinct, downtime is just excruciating due to cards reading and combat (which is just same thing over and over, as there is one monster deck), no to mention the best way to win is to bash the weakest player, and at some point players get so bored that insted of reading the cards they go "fight or flight?". For a game this expensive i would expect more.

This game is thoroughly mediocre. It shines only with expensive expansions.

Player it as a 5p game in coop...will never do that again...that designer can create games with a great optic, but behind the surface i see nothing impressive

The dice poker minigame, which isn't zero-sum, was such a bad concept for an already long, pretty simple game. In terms of the reward, you should always play unless you need a specific amount of money that it could cost you. But it's just a bland waste of time. This felt like a chore with 3 players; I can't even imagine getting through it with 5 and needing to watch all those poker dice matches. It maybe could've been a 9/10 in 2000 for me when there weren't more streamlined games in the adventure genre? Not sure if there's an option to play without poker dice, but I absolutely would take that out of the game if possible.

The Witcher Old World is by far the most disappointing, boringly long and uninteresting board game I have played. It looks good and this is where the positives end for me. Samey turns with pretty much nothing interesting that can keep you invested - upgrade this or that skill (regardless which one the feel is the same), play dice poker, take a coin, etc. The battles and player turns are so long that other players forget what they are doing, "quests" ask you to select an option and bam take this reward - no skill check or something to make you excited. The most MEH game I have tried, thankfully sold out already.

Wow seal of excellence. This game is expensive trash. Only way to progress is to get money. Only way to get money is trickling randomly through events or risk the small amount of money on a random gambling mechanic. Also it goes way too long. My confidence in joey's opinions has taken a major hit.

Totally disagree. Did you see the TV show? Did you play the video game? Did you read the books? Also the mechanic is very bad. Would give it a 3 without SG box. Sorry this game and your review is not "very clever"
