From Stockholm by ferry to Turku in Finland, and then by night train to Rovaniemi: the Santa Claus Express from Helsinki to northern Finnish Lapland. Night trains are a very common means of transport in Finland. In order to get to the north of Finland in Lapland's capital Rovaniemi, reporter Patrick Wira first takes a modern ferry from Stockholm to Finland. There is even a sauna on the ship! The journey goes across the Baltic Sea to Turku. From there the Santa Claus Express starts in the early evening to Lapland in the far north. Patrick meets Finnish workers, a Cornish train tourist and even an old school friend on his journey. (More episodes in the ARD media library: 1.ard.de/nachtzug-stockholm-l...)

Our reporters test night trains because they are trendy, and not just for travellers. In addition to the established ones, there are also numerous new providers who transport you cheaply and comfortably to numerous old and new destinations - without any stress. The advantages: saving on accommodation costs, climate-friendly travel, rested and arriving at the destination on time for breakfast. In our series "With the night train through Europe", Alexandra Kosma and Patrick Wira get an impression: Can the night train redeem all these advantages? How is it actually possible to travel by night train? Which routes in Europe are suitable for a trip? And what costs and comfort do you have to reckon with? We also talk to the travellers: What motivates them to take this means of transport, where do they see the advantages and disadvantages of traveling by night train and where exactly is the journey going - and why?
In our series "On the night train through Europe" we test different night train travel routes:
