In this episode of the What’s Underneath Project, the artist Monica Canilao explains how having a father who was in and out of jail and never at home lead to a constant struggle with abusive energy. When one relationship turned verbally and mentally abusive, Monica began to cut her wrists, hoping that her boyfriend would find the scars and realize how much he was hurting her. “I used to be very conscious about my cutting scars, but now I own them,” Monica reflects. “They're a piece of me and I’m stronger by them.”

Really, all day, did you notice all these videos are just exploiting women, pretending these videos are anything more than click bait , would be stupid. All the interviews are stupid 1st world problems, that mostly only exist in America. So could they have made these videos with out people stripping naked, yes, but they would not get half the views. So they exploit these women for money...

i hate that i relate to her on every level. i have borderline personality, which i believe stems from my father abandoning me, and i began self harming, and only putting myself into toxic relationships and never being able to leave them.

She is so full of love and light. When she was talking about forgiving her father I felt really inspired to forgive everyone who had ever hurt me. This video made my life a little better. I am starting to think that the more complex the ladies stories are in this series the more clothing they wear like they are almost trying to hide something but everyone I have seen has been just beautiful and need never hide themselves.

+OHTHECHITCHAT They all seem rather confident, so I don't think that they are trying to hide themselves. Rather the clothes, jewelry, makeup, et cetera, represent another layer of their complex and beautiful selves. Their bodies are their canvas, to show who they are to the world. And beautiful paintings are often comprised of multiple layers.

It's how some people put their pain into the outside world. Cutting usually scars and that's a reason not to do it. Another big reason is because it becomes an addiction and you can start doing it compulsively and cut too much to where it gets deadly. Pain releases certain feel good chemicals that help relieve other mental pain and can distract a person too. I do not promote it *at all*. There are healthier coping mechanisms. I'm just saying thay it doesn't make you weak, it's psychological and people have done it plenty of times in the past (it is not new)

I feel so ashamed of cutting and in some way its good because it motivates me to not, but also I hate the way people make me feel for it. Its like Im somehow mentally weaker or to be pitied for doing it.
