I love the sound of the pages turning on the Raw and Drawn & Quarterly anthologies. Just sound great. Also, I remember playing both DC Heroes and the Marvel Superheroes game. Still remember those fondly.

Thank you so much for talking about the image guys being "rich kids." When people have talked about using them as a model for anyone can succeed in comics I've always pointed out that they all were already well off in life. They had wealthy families. There wasn't a risk to their livelihoods. Unlike us artists who come from low class families and have to work and work at being artists at the same time.

Before working comic-book retail in Toronto, I used to work at Andromeda Distribution. We didn't have new comic-books coming in throughout the week. All the comics were picked up by truck, just across the Canada/U.S. border, each week. I think South of Detroit, possibly? "Distribution Night" was the all-night job of pulling/assembling/shipping all of the orders for/to Canadian retail shops, so they'd have their stuff for "New Comic-Book Day". Which (if memory serves) was Wednesdays, for many years..

Was it in Dearborn, MI? That is a long drive from Toronto brother, especially every week! Worked at a shop in Windsor, Ontario and that's we we picked up our books weekly (Tuesday or Thursday I think). I remember one of the first times I went, I was completely horrified when I saw a very large fellow who's job it was to rip the covers off off books for what I learned were returns just sipping on a Super Big Gulp and dumping them one by one into a huge garbage bin.

Harry Peter was astoundingly not a pseudonym, these were more innocent times. He was indeed the mainline Wonder Woman artist as well in the 1940s and beyond, co-creating (but without credit) the character with William Moulton Marston.

I worked at Heroes World 1993/94. East coast distributor that had a few brick and mortor shops, of which I worked in one of those. Its going back, but I remember ALL the comics coming in at the same time, on the same weekly day. In answer to something Ed questioned about shops getting books at different times.

Hey fellas, you mention that you guys usually appear at Heroes Con at the same time. Would you ever consider doing a live Kayfabe episode of some kind? Maybe you could flip through one of the “specials” that Wizard did over the years. There was an X-Men one I remember having a hologram foil cover!

I remember really being into Richard Sala at this time too because of Invisible Hands and Thirteen O'Clock. Oh man, Brat Pack by Rick Veitch is legendarily good. I was all excited when you started talking about it, then that article had nothing to do with it! Truly a heel move.

It reminds you of Revenge of the Nerds, because it was. Unless you were alive and purchasing comics back then, it's hard to imagine when compared to today's culture. Back in 1992, girls (and "cool" boys) ruthlessly rejected and made fun of the kids (of which, the incredibly vast majority were boys) buying and reading comic books. This WAS our escape. How do you entice a young, straight boy going through puberty, when he's rejected by girls, to read comics? Draw scantily clad "babes" on the cover. Simple as that.

I love what you guys are doing with these videos. I'm new to YT content, but I had planned to do the same thing on a smaller scale. In regards to NCBD back then, I recall running to the shops on either a Thursday or Friday. Three of us had to fight over the last copy of Youngblood on the shelf at our first stop. Luckily we found more at our next stop. I ended up with two copies. It didn't take long to understand what a disappointing hot pile the story was.

Not enough mentioning of that cover. They got in HUGE trouble for that mixture of Marvel and Image. Wizard had to apologize, promise to never reprint the cover... heck, a few issues later when they start selling back issues that's the one issue they wouldn't sell.

Not sure if this is the same guy, but one of the fan art pieces is by David Palumbo which is the same name as a phenomenal fantasy painter who is also the son of Julie Bell and stepson of Boris Vallejo. He would have been 10 in 1992 so it seems plausible that this is the early work of fantasy art royalty.

I'm 95% sure that D&Q issue 9 is Seth in his earlier style Had a similiar reaction to the Peter's Wonder Woman when I first came across it in reprints in Adventure Comics. Need to read more of it. I started reading Fantastic Four Unlimited based on this video. I'd heard about this Trimpe phase of trying to fit in with the popular syle. Do you think kids picking this got fooled by this or was it obvious to them that this was an older artist trying to be cool?

Man, that Jim-Leenization of Alex Saviuk art was sad and painful to see. His style was so classic, so fine as it was. And that Jim-Lee coat on it just ruined. Not that it was exactly poorly done or anything... it's just a mismatch. If at least he was requested to be more Todd-McFarlanian, it would fit more with his style, although the end result would probably look more like he was trying to mimic Neal Adams or Sienkiewicz, unless he went for the cartoony style of form as well. There was even some Jim-Leeniesque inking of Sal Buscema at some point, also completely unnecessary, but not as incompatible, at least.
