Agreed, I'm seriously considering adding a homebrew rule that adds 1/2 spellcasting modifier to the damage of all Cantrips. Give them a little bit more kick while still accounting for the extra damage die all Cantrips are supposed to be getting in exchange. I _think_ that should bring the average Cantrip damage back up to be roughly on par with the pre-remaster Cantrips.

There are already a few spells that are fitting for Magus thankfully, and I bet they're going to add even more that fit their theme more. The Magus will also be inordinately affected by the lack of bonus damge to cantrips and they seem to making many if the replacement cantrips save dc rather than attacks. Maybe they will fix this somehow but the Magus won’t be part of Player Core 1 or 2 - soooo I’m concerned.
@KalaamNozalys
@KalaamNozalys 9 месяцев назад
@@chellemaq The lack of modifier to damage is more beneficial to the magus, gives them less reason to invest in intelligence if they don't want to. That way the damage is more in line between magus who invest in INT and those who do not, and makes them more MAD.
@Gaali1997
@Gaali1997 9 месяцев назад
While I don't think losing the Ability Score Modifier on a lot of cantrips is a problem for most classes, I think it might cause some real problems for the Magus in particular, since they get so few spell slots and rely on their cantrips so much. I've got a player who's playing a Starlight Span Magus using firearms, and the bulk of his damage comes from being able to Gouging Claw at a distance. Maybe adding your spellcasting modifier to damage will be a class-based thing now?
@audreygirard1411
@audreygirard1411 9 месяцев назад
Feels like the removing of ability mods from cantrips were the worst solution to whatever the heck Paizo was trying to solve. (Consistency?) It impacts low level casters pretty much to the exclusion of all else. Higher level casters will not only rarely have to fall back on cantrips due to their large number of slots, but 4d8+4 (-4) hurts a lot less than 1d8+4 (-4) does in terms of output. Seems like a sloppy fix for consistency, given how rough low level pf2e already is.
@waldowallace9102
@waldowallace9102 9 месяцев назад
My understanding, could wrong, is that they are going to increase the dice to compensate for the lack of stat bonus. But, on average, you still end up losing overall, 2-3 points, which yes, certainly hurts more at lower levels. Not sure why this needed to be done. Certainly didn't happen to the martial who happily make use of their maxed out strength or dexterity.
@mateokirstine9782
@mateokirstine9782 9 месяцев назад
Because remember, Paizo is deathly afraid of 1e casters happening again so all of their toys need to be taken away. It's why the old wizard schools were borderline useless and the gods and domains for clerics aren't even a quarter as varied as they used to be, they want to keep the classes into these easily definable boxes so no one is too strong.
@toodleselnoodos6738
@toodleselnoodos6738 9 месяцев назад
They actually highlighted the reason why. They’re trying to make it easier for casters to archetype into each other. Casters were so much more limited in where they archetyped: you wanted one that shared your stat and/or your spell tradition. Your cantrips would have worse damage and worst hit. Spell tradition doesn’t matter anymore. And now you don’t have to worry about your spell modifier. The only thing that matters stat wise is the hit, which helps a lot more.

I really like this idea of focusing on a theme of spells across many of the old schools of magic. This always struck me as oddabout focusing on a specific school, that there might be really thematic spells that are TECHNICALLY another school but fit into the theme of how you play as a blaster or enchanter or summoner. The future of spellcasting is bright - mostly because the damn druids in my area have been lobbing exploding seeds around! I like the idea of spells being more grounded in world and not the schools of magic. My only concern (and perhaps a quibble) is that if each school gets a focus spell, I will have a harder time building my own schools (I run homebrew) without having to make my own focus spell. I suppose I could search focus spells of ALL classes to fill in gaps, but a list of unattached focus spells would be nice (but perhaps too much to ask for...) Perhaps I have just thought up of a 3rd party product I (or someone willing to steal my idea) could create: the Chelaxian News and World Report Ranking of Magic Schools - a ranked list of the top 100 schools of magic to apprentice your children including curriculum listings and school specialties (focus spells).

It feels like this might be a GM issue. I recently played a spellcaster in a one-off where we were testing the Animist and when I threw out an AOE spell (Divine Wrath, in this isntance) on the first round I did a total of 180 damage across all the enemies I hit and sickened 4 creatures and slowed 2 of those. The idea that there could simply be an engineering school of magic that he fits into, or better yet a homebrewed school of mathemagics, is awesome. I don't play Pathfinder currently (It's so fucking hard to find a group, you have no idea), but I might actually steal this idea for Wizards in my own creative works. We're so used to having magic be divided based on what the spells do. That can still be a thing, but having Wizards instead study spells for what they will be used for instead of a catagory of what they do is such a fucking cool way of doing it! It changes it from a "school" of magic to a LITERAL school of magic! This change open the floodgates for creativity! I'm picturing a high-magic setting where magic is something that's just regularly taught as part of the curriculum. This also makes spells way more personal for Wizards, as they are specializing into individual spells rather than an entire category. In a way, it's kinda like art. Just becuase two people are painters does it mean that they will be good in the exact same ways.

At first, I was very sad about the cantrip change, but I think that there is more to unpack here, especially if we ignore the example. Caustic Blast is, IMNHO, a poor example of the change as it is so very different from Acid Splash (area vs single target, AoE vs. splash damage, to-hit vs. save/suck, damage and crit damage). I believe a much fairer comparison would be Ignition from RoE and Produce Flame. The only differences are 2d4 vs. 1d4+ability mod for damage and a small damage boost for use in melee. Obviously, we need more data to say something definitive, but it appears that all that 'explanation' is just justification for replacing ability mod with an extra damage die. Not nearly as much of an issue as it appears at first glance.

I'm playing in my first 2e campaign right now, and spell components have not come up - partially because it's more of a casual game and the GM doesn't want to track them. This is somewhat unfortunate, because I'm playing a Psychic, and was excited about the notion of my character's mental components (verbal become mental, material become somatic and all somatic are subtle). It creates a situation where my character can - by the book - cast spells subtly. In a previous game, run by a different GM, we were playing 5e Curse of Strahd, and spell components DID matter. However, the only way they ever figured in was for the reality of our characters being able to cast spells (at all, or covertly). We didn't worry too much about materials ("did you make sure to collect 5 pounds of bat guano today?") but we did pay attention to verbal and somatic. Our GM's argument was that if a spell has verbal components, there's a good chance someone in the other room who you're hiding from is going to hear you chanting magical words. If it has somatic components, odds are you won't be able to use them if your character is tied to a chair with their hands behind their back. I see Manipulate as being more akin to the somatic components, though it's open-ended enough that I'd guess different tables will choose to handle it differently. Now, though, the spells have a hard trait that you can't exactly ignore because "tracking all that stuff is too cumbersome", and the point you (NoNat) make in this video about Attacks of Opportunity makes a lot of sense: It doesn't exactly matter what the flavor of the manipulation is, what matters is the mechanics. Yes, it will still open up AoO's, and yes, you probably can't do them if you're bound and gagged... unless you're a Psychic...

Overall I really like these changes! Very flavorful and fun. My only concern with removing spellcasting attribute to damage is in the impact that has on the non-wizard casters who rely more on cantrips, namely Psychic and also Magus to an extent. However, I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt, and I actually think that if it seems like the changes nerf them too heavily then homebrewing a feature that grants them modifier to damage on cantrips would actually make them stand out and feel more distintinctive. Maybe gained at lvl 1 for Psychic, lvl 4 for Magus. Definitely something I'll keep my eye on when my players make the switch to the update version.

I'm curious to see how the removal of components affects psychics. Psychics were unique in that they turned verbal and material components into mental components. This essentially meant that psychics were very unique, in that they could cast spells while holding their breath or unable to speak in some way. With the removal of components, this unique class feature is getting stripped away as well. They'll have to revise psychic spell casting a bit to make it a bit more clear what they can do with the new system. Granted, it'd be a small thing for them to lose as it's highly situational, but it was still very interesting class flavor.

The issue isn't spellcasters are weak overall it's early game they struggle and this just makes it worse.2d4 versus 1d4 plus mod just makes low rolls feel infinitely worse and means that most cantrips are just worse than pulling out a bow and attacking twice for 2d6 damage. It not only doesn't meaningful help spellcasters early it further solidifies electric arc as the only valid choice for a damage cantrip and means you never want to take a damage cantrip from dedications since it will almost certainly be worse than anything else you can use. Overall while some of the wizard stuff seems cool I'm really disappointed that paizo not only didn't meaningfully address the core issues with early spell balance but made it worse than it already was

I understand why they removed "schools" but not a fan. I don't hate it just feel like they purged the wizard from wizard. Now they are just a mage or magician. It probably works out in the end. They'll need to cover different types of mages then. I'll be curious if they make an illusionist style or something inline with that style of play.

@rainraven9881
@rainraven9881 9 месяцев назад
Easiest way to deal with Silent Spell and Still Spell would probably just make it so you can ignore the Concentrate or Manipulate trait respectively, probably with a rename on the former unless they add in a requirement to speak when casting spells with the Concentrate trait, since I don't think that's a normal requirement for the trait. Eschew Materials will likely be removed altogether.

@rainraven9881
@rainraven9881 9 месяцев назад
Seems to look that way right now, but they could always modify the trait or add something to the spell rules to put that requirement back in, so we likely won't know for sure until Player Core 1 is officially released. Edit: There might also be some GM fiat in here since I just double checked on AoN and the Manipulate trait just says "you must physically manipulate an object or make gestures to use an action with this trait", so I can easily see some GMs saying waving your sword or stick around in the air is fine while others might say spells require a free hand due to needing to perform highly specific finger motions.

I'm going to miss spell schools like abjuration, conjuration, etc, since i've literally known them my entire life - but I am not against this change at all. In my own settings I may just keep them in there as flavor, if not any mechanical benefit. Love the new system though, as the curriculums sound really fun. I don't mind the removal of +spellcasting modifier to damage. Removal of components is fine for me - it was sometimes hard to deal with them anyways (Like charm making you wave your hands around like an idiot and speak in a loud clear voice). I think having some be more easily 'hidden' spells is really good for a lot of lesser-used wizards like illusionists and enchanters (there I go using spell schools again :P) Looking forward to everything more than I was when I first heard the news!

There is one thing about removing components that I think may not have been accounted for and that is the verbal component. Currently, spells that require a verbal component require you to actually speak 'in a loud voice' in order to cast them. Theyre repalcing verbal with Cocentrate... but NOT with Auditory. Concentrate only means you need 'a degree of mental concentration and discipline.', and it's the Auditory trait that means the action 'can be successfully performed only if the creature using the action can speak or otherwise produce the required sounds'. Does this now mean that spellcasters no longer need to speak? Does this mean that spellcasters can now more easily cast spells from stealth, thus potentially making Eldritch trickster rogues more viable? I'm genuinely curious if Paizo thought about this during this redesign for spell components.

I've been adjusting a changing A LOT these last couple of years but I don't view that as a bad thing. I'll have a soft spot in my heart for VSM, but I'm ok with it going the way of the THAC0. I am curious how silence will be handled when it comes to casters, though I suspect what they'll do is have a separate "You can't cast magic right now" spell, or since it's all manipulate now stun might be enough. I trust Paizo at this point. Looking forward to getting the books.

Disagree hard on removing the ability modifier to damage on cantrips. This is one of the things I preferred over 5e, that even if you rolled like crap you still did a bare minimum of damage. Especially at low levels. Now even if you hit on your spell attack roll you can see your caster roll minimum damage, like my firebolt-flinging wizard in 5e. I think this is one time player satisfaction should override consistency of design, but what do I know?

@@mateokirstine9782 it's not like casters adding their ability mod to damage was unbalanced either. Cantrips in most cases are just a backup option and not the most optimal choice for damage output. @mateokirstine9782

@@Nickelback8469 Very true, I'm not sure what problem they think they are trying to fix with these changes. It's very odd. Weird that Thunderstrike is replacing Shocking Grasp after all. To me it looks more like a modified Lightning Bolt that you can start casting at a lower level. Meanwhile it's different enough from Shocking Grasp that I see no reason both spells couldn't coexist. I think unless the remaster does something to surprise me I'm still going to allow Shocking Grasp at my table in addition to Thunderstrike.
@TheRhysStreams

I think you mixed up the wizard scaling, you're going to do 2d8 at level 4, which is more or less the same as typical spell level scaling. so 2d8 as a 2nd level spell, 3d8 as a 3rd. It's not as bad as all that. That said... No wizards have not been in a good space, the incapacitate tag sucks, they do a lot of damage to enemies nobody cares about, this hurts them pretty badly. Obviously the utility of wizards will remain high but the removal of casting ability score damage makes them far too RNG and swingy, there's a reason that ability score damage exists it's to make players not feel as shitty when they get bad damage rolls. you have some consistent damage that you control. Paizo may say that their damage was too high or something but it really wasn't, again big aoe damage hits a bunch of enemies that more or less don't matter, their job in the encounter is literally to give the wizard something to show off with and tax their spell slots. They don't need to be doing more of that, nor do the wizards need to get further screwed against boss type enemies, where they already contribute very little.
@mateokirstine9782

Yep, a friend introduced me to 2e talking about how good the system was and everything. I was super into it for a bit, until I realized how the game works on a fundamental level. A lot of cool spell caster options don't exist or aren't functional. You buff the fighter and maybe debuff the badguy, you have your barely useful out of combat utility spells, and you sometimes heal if you're primal or divine. It's a shame because I love the 3 action system and what it did for martials, but I don't like the tiny, cramped box they shoved a bunch of classes into. Oh well, I learned about how cool 1e was and now I really want to make a cavalier or port over the goofy summoner I made until 3e comes out to hopefully bring back cool customization while also having the 3 action system

The Secondary Detonation is great in my book because even if the enemy gets wise to it and moves to avoid the blast, you're still forcing your opponent to use an action to scramble around on the battlefield. If your enemy was in a specific spot mid-battle, chances are this position was useful to them; forcing them to move to avoid damage should usually be an advantage, even before counting them using up an action for it.

@mateokirstine9782
@mateokirstine9782 9 месяцев назад
@@thorlocks7818 Fair, but it's a lot easier to scribble in a bubble that says "I used this spell slot" than it is to erase and rewrite how much mana you have. The paper can only handle so much of that before you start to wear through to the other end if you use the same spot like you would on a character sheet. The actual system itself would work just fine, it's just the realities of friction that'd be annoying.
