The Deathclaw is probably the most fitting fallout creature to stand in as a Tarmogoyf. I almost hate myself enough to get a playset of these for "Zoomer Jund"

I was about to say - I think Richard not knowing Fallout & knowing what a Deathclaw is contributed immensely to how he feels - He said "They just took his design & put it on a fallout character!" - Meanwhile, that's just what Deathclaws look like. This isn't a "generic" monster that was tailor-made for the card. Lol. Also, Richard, let's be real: "Iconic" to who? Who outside of Magic knows what a Tarmogoyf is? Magic IP is so, so, so weak outside of name itself.

Tarmogoyf is iconic because of tournament/competitive play not because of lore. Jace feels like an apples to oranges comparison because yes it was heavily played in competitive but his character is also lore relevant

You guys were pretty wrong about calling a Deathclaw a "random character" in the Fallout universe. Deathclaw is the Tarmogoyf of the Fallout universe.

They mean "Scrounging Deathclaw" is a random character. "Deathclaw" alone would be iconic, but not a specific enough name to put to cardboard.

Keep in mind that the definition of a "crime" is "In order to commit a crime, you have to cast a spell or use an ability that targets an opponent or their “stuff” (permanents, spells, cards in any zone other than exile)" So just combine the 4-Oko (yeah, that's his name now. I coined it) with anything that can target each turn and you got some real value there.

It's possible that the reduction in language support is because they laid off those translation teams. Their product cycle is such that the timing might line up.

I see Richard's point on tarmogoyf but the deathclaw is suuuper iconic in fallout franchise. If you see/hear one running at you you either have to deal with it or run away as fast as possible but they're faster than you lol.

On the Tarmogoyf being character swapped, this is the most common way they've done UB, right? Personally I like the reskins way more than there being a bunch of mechanically unique UB cards I have to put in my competitive decks

One thing to note about this new Emrakul against Living End or Rhinos is you could hold priority while they resolve Living End or Crashing Footfalls and cast it with madness cost to steal all the creatures being reanimated or created on EoT, this is an answer to those decks since Madness allows you to cheat the timing restrictions. I think it is quite strong for that specific reason alone.

As far as simplified chinese going away, 2 more factors not discussed are general politics and a potential tarrif on "luxury items" and the cultural taboos around some of the core magic artwork. If alternate or retouched art has to be sourced for one specific market, is it worth it.

I loved the pro tour! And the 75k was really really cool too 😊 I hope these will grow in popularity as there’s more exposure and that these were overall successes that WotC will continue to iterate on. Also, this is definitely more Blazing Saddles than it is The Good, the Bad and the Ugly.

The Nebula Awards seem to struggle with some book when the awards where in that country. Not all US movies get an opening in China. While it is a big market, it's also complex.

Richard made the example of the videogames, but the videogames that have hundred of millions of players are chinese games (like genshin impact). As an example league of legends, one of the most played game ever, is not played that much in china, because they have their own version of the game.

I think Maro is onto something with Bloomburrow. I was at an impromptu commander game this weekend with a diverse group. I am heavily enfranchised, another player had gotten off a 2-year sabbatical from magic, one player was new, one player was a tertiary participant (not playing, but familiar and hanging out), and the last was playing their first game in over 10 years (stopped around Tarkir). We jammed a few commander games and while we did, I brought up the new releases. Most reactions were mixed-to-bad (everybody groaned at Assassin's Creed), but Bloomburrow? They all perked up. Every person was gushing over the reveal art and excited about the set *just based on the vibes*. The non-player basically said they got 'dibs' on what they assumed was the legendary badger. I honestly don't recall non-invested players getting hyped for a set like this. Could just be animal lovers skewing things, but I think this set might have broad appeal.

I do kinda like the idea of Lumra heading up a commander deck in a utility land deck. Field of Ruin, Tec Edge, Strip Mine, Encroaching Wastes, Ghost quarter, Dust Bowl, Wasteland, a bunch of fetches, Scavenger Grounds, Hidden Nursery, the Green cycling lands, Blast Zone, Buried Ruin, Command Beacon, Cryptic Caves, Inventors Fair, Haunted Fengraf, Throne of the High City, Tyrite Sanctum, The Hunters Maze, Roadside Reliquary. Cash in your lands for value and then get to reuse them whenever you cast your commander. Probably not a good deck but it would be cool.

Duelist seems good as a two drop for Esper Raffine decks I guess, just with Raffine you'd have a reliable card draw that would allow it to grow big fast at turn 3 or 4. Although the 2 drop slot is already fairly packed for Raffine decks as is.

What bothers me about the Tarmogoyf reskin is that why is this deathclaw's crteature type a lhurgoyf and the rest not? The Scrounging Deathclaw's creature type is now essentially different from the other deathclaws in the set.

Duelest of the mind might be good in that mono blue delver standard deck. solid 1,2 and 3 drop creatures with the Haughty Djinn. plus it helps fill the yard for the tolarian Terror? idk. Might not be good until post-rotation.

I feel like the ACR historical figures are not based on p/t for their physical frames but for their effect on history. Cleopatra was a powerful pharaoh. She had armies she could command, etc etc.

I was there at Chicago Con playing in the Competitive event. It was way too loud because for some reason, they blasted each speaker right beside the competitive tables. When everyone cheered it essentially made ear drums bleed. It was beyond reasonable, or planned properly.

I think the reskins are a good way to reprint popular cards in a new UB frame to drive product sales and drop singles prices at the same time. I’m generally against UB, but this is the ideal way to make UB content. Every card should have an in-universe version for those who want to “opt out”.

@pistolpete7422 they didn't promise no mechanically unique Secret Lairs, they said that Secret Lairs with mechanically unique cards will get non-Secret lair non-UB equivalents that would be distributed via the list cards. I was talking more about the "a good way to reprint popular cards..." that will not happen. While for people like myself who simply play the game and don't fantasize it being a hobby that generates wealth for me, plenty of people in the community from LGS owners, online Card dealers like TCGplayer, Rudy from Alpha investments...those kinds of people don't want WotC reprinting products in a way that actually impacts their ability to sell those cards at an ever increasing price. And since those kinds of actors in the community actually purchase and open the most product from WotC...

Yeah Tarmogoyf and Deathclaws are both similarly iconic. Deathclaws are the nastiest predators in the wasteland, so making a Deathclaw out of Tarmo seems pretty appropriate to me as a fan of both games. I'd definitely run the Deathclaw versions of Tarmo if I played Jund or another deck that'd run him.

57:57 that bear looks cool, but it basically is an Aftermath Analyst that mills one more card and has a big body instead of giving you a sac trigger. I am not sure that is more relevant then coming down earlier and sacing for effect.

WG Auras in a final at magic30 was pretty surprising, that was only a few years ago. Im not sure many people besides Nathan played that. Did anyone else notice that Ajani's ultimate is a pseudo CATa-clysm?

Man, Dethclaw Gofy is by FAR the best thing about the Fallout set. It could not be a more perfect fit and yes, Deathclaws are to Fallout what Goyf is to magic.

Bloomburrow is borrowing from the Redfall book series about a world with no humans and talking animals, and similar settings. As someone who really loved those books in my younger years it's probably going to be the only actual set I care about this year besides scooping up fetches.

Honestly I like the reskins. It would be different if they were reskinning them in 'universes within' sets but if you're printing them in a UB set as a UB thing then that's fine. Tarmogoyf is still Tarmogoyf. Nothing has changed there.

I never played Falllout and I know very little abbout it, but I know Deathclaws. As far as I can tell it is THE FALLLOUT MONSTER. So I see it as an honor for Tarmagoyf.

I actually think duelist of the mind is going to be amazing in Phoenix decks. It might be better than ledger shredder, since Phoenix decks run a bunch of cheap interaction. It is at least a sideboard card in there for creature decks as a way of finishing the game in haughty djinn fashion xD

The reason Emrakul is busted is because the gain control of creatures part is on cast. The return creatures is on death. If you counter your own Emrakul. You will still gain control of all creatures, but you will never have to return them.
