Haha, just found a "genuine" one and this is it's description. ”Genuine 6411 Q5 Universal Spade Q5 Engineer Shovel Multifunctional Folding Spade for Debt Settlement Material Special Price Package”
you are absolutely correct. You can find this shovel in Chinese ebay equivalent (taobao) with a price of around 10~15 dollars. It definitely doesn't worth 100 dollars.
His first attept to cut trough the band iron was probably not really intended this way, rather happened because he wasn't concentrated enough. The second attempt would've been a success, if he only had the loop fed in turned upwards ... I'm using two folding shovels (or field spades, as we germans put it) and one fixed. The first is the tree-piece-folder as shown above. Really useful in confined spaces and as a multi-purpose tool for cars. My second one is a two-piece folder made in South Korea. Incredibly stable and sturdy. The only bad thing with both are the nuts. Again and agian one has to re-tighten them. The fixed is a replica of an WWII entrenching tool as used in the german Wehrmacht with a shortened handle, which over the years proved to be indestrucible. In opposite to all others, it isn't pointed. It makes a perfect camp tool, comparable with the CS SF Shovel. As with all foldable shovels (exept the extremely tough but heavy old West German Army model), the tend to wear out and become wobbly. Therefore i prefer fixed shovels.
@GearBuyersGuide If it's the official army training tape, maybe they started to issue it recently. By the way, when was that tape dated? It don't sounds like the Chinese army's style to release training tape. Wondering why they stared to do that.
That's an impressive blade for sure, but I wonder how long it will keep it's edge after it travels against the rocks and dirt when you use the shovel to dig.
my Chinese one is great, I love the wooden handle, I need to have a folding one walking around England with anything like knife style makes the locals jittery and I live in the country, a non folder is ok for in your garden, anyway I know Americans hate Chinese EDC/Survival stuff but anyway great video.
About those Chinese letters, they simply means Chinese(中国) Multi-function(万能, literally means 10,000 functions, well in Chinese we tend to use this number to say it's "many") Military(军) Shovel.(锹). The holes at the bottom I guess they are for multi-position lanyard.
The three chinese characters on the handle, before ZL 99... means "Patent No.", and those on another side just says "Chinese Multi-utility Military Shovel" : )
The design of chinese military shove is way better then the US and German ones. 1 The hinge is a solid lock, would not wobble after longe time usage. even it fails you can easily fix it . 2 Wood straight handle is way better than the america etool. Etool got that stupid trangular handle, which make it useless as a choping tool(which is advertised).
@GearBuyersGuide by official army training tape, that's not the commercial you mentioned in the video, right? Then may be this thing is recently adopted by the army.
Hollywood should make a movie about how a man, having nothing but this shovel, survives the apocalypse and rebuild the whole civilization on wasteland.
The first german shovel is an east german model back before the fall of the wall. The second nust ve of similar age but is west german and the third german shovel is afik now in use with our army.
WJQ-308 wasn't real military shovel, PLA never use it, it's made by a small manufacture in Nanjing and sell to the civilian market. It does the job but not good enough for that price! The real one(PLA DJQ5) made by 6411 Factory(yes, this military factory doesn't have a name, only code). Real one can sustain ONE TONS when use as flying anchor. come with a pin for mine detection and also can use as a bayonet. Try google "DJQ5"
I don't know man. I can't recall how many times in the US military I had to fend off an attacker using my shovel as a shield while seated in my parked vehicle, then use that same shovel to chop wood for a raft and then use it to paddle across the river and only to find I left my bottle opener behind and had noting to chop up that damn potato I kept in my pocket. No, seriously- I drank a lot when I was in and that bottle opener would have probably been wore out.
I think the hole in the bottom of the handle may be for some sort of extender for more heavy duty shovelling work but I am not 100% certain. As soon as I saw it the first thing that started going through my head was a mechanism for attaching a longer handle.
It seems it's only being sold through middle-men on Ebay right now, that's why the price is so inflated. $80 + shipping is way too much IMO. Someone really needs to get a distribution contract with North America because these things will sell well. (Either that or make an AMERICAN knock-off of the Chinese.) LMAO.
The one you got there looks like a cheap Chinese knock off of the Chinese Military Multipurpose Shovel (that's what the fancy words said). Also the numbers are patent number.
Neat, I couldn't spend that much on a shovel though. "No match for the Chinese shovel." lol You have to try bringing that shovel to the bar! The hole could be used to attach a larger pole for more leverage. Good video!
I have my doubts about this product. Just recieved mine, and I am not impressed about the quality of the steel. The "blade" used for chopping chips off very easily, and the scissor function gets damaged from cutting even the smallest of metal strips. I have the original version, not the Version II which is "The strength of steel increased, processing temperature higher than normal WJQ-308.". I don´t know if i´ll buy the version II some day, theres still no update on quality issue.
If you had knocked that beer over reviewing a Chinese shovel, we would've had to revoke your citizenship! Next thing you'll see is a two hour special on QVC or a late nite infomercial "As Seen On TV" - Not One, but Two Shovels and that's not all, call in the next 10mins and receive an genuine Chinese AK47 for 3 Monthly payments of only $19.95, limit 100 per household! I'd rather have to Woodmen Pal and a Leatherman!
@TonyWonderit yeah, and it is RMB other than US$. So,you may be cheated? Also , you need to sharpen the knife part , so every sellers in china won't sell a knife being sharpened.
Mine looks markedly different. I got mine as a Christmas present from a friend. I’ve used mine in bush crafting sessions and it’s a tank. However, I don’t know what my friend paid for it but I know it wasn’t cheap
@Hiluxtaco I hired a band to do background music.. but to make it more unique they only instrument they use is cymbals I am confident this will be the hot new trend in videos in 2011
At the start of the vid you said it was worth about $17 did you stiil agree with that at the end of the vid or would you say it was worth the $80ish that you paid? cheers
U know it was all a good idea until I remember they can't access RU-vid in china took me a while to find a link with a photo to show him what I'm looking for. Waiting for his reply will pm u. Shipping may cost to go up
This is not that hi tech for chinese army to keep closely guarded secret. Even stealth 5th gen fighter aircraft was put on display and recorded in tv footage
This is just a commercial piece, not really issued to Chinese Army. Given time, maybe we will have a boss that is stupid enough to decide to issue that. Chinese Army do not put their issued gears on video commercials, and the guy in Chinese camo jacket in the commercial is not a soldier.
