Talk about WJW Channel 8 (now FOX-8) back in '71, they had Franz the Toymaker, Merv Griffin, City Camera News, Hoolihan and Big Chuck, Adventure Road, Truth or Consequences w/Bob Barker and news anchors Dave Buckel (he retired in 1993), Jeff Maynor (now at WKYC Channel 3), Howard Hoffman (he passed away in 2006). Evening anchors were Marty Ross (he passed away in 1973) and Murray Stewart (he passed away in 1976) and of course still there to this day, Dick Goddard.
Jeff Maynor is dead??!! Oh my goodness!!! I always thought he was so handsome in the EARLY 70s. Sad to hear this. I remember Jeff, Jim Finerty, Jim Hale, and Jim Mueller from the news at Wjkw. They were known as the 3 Jims and a Jeff. Great lineup.
Nice upload, seeing Dick Goddard from 71 and watching him progress from your videos paints a full picture of him. When he retires they'll have to call you for stock footage. :P
My favorite skit with Bob was snoopy and the red baron. He flew the plane in that skit.I heard that channel 8 in cleveland is considering replaying their skits. That would be great.
I was 5 in 1971 but remember all this vividly. We always had Ch.8 on. Marty passed away from cancer in 73 or 74 (correct) & remember the footage they showed of his funeral, with Murray Stewart sitting by the casket. Murray committed suicide several years after that, & recall that was the lead story that evening on the news.
Oh my God is this a blast from the past. I would have been 9 in 1971, and living in Shaker Heights, 3rd grade, Mrs. Rankin's class. Does anyone where the music came from? I think it had greater application than just this promo and its FABU!
The music used in this piece is on the SoftTempoLounge channel. Look for the title "Pink Balloon," by Horst Jankowski. Album is "Black Forest Explosion" (1968). No I don't think YT will let me point to it directly. --SJR
Thank's.I was lucky to have an older brother that would bug my mom to let me stay up late on friday night to watch Big Chuck and Houlihan when i was 6 or 7 and i continued to enjoy that show.I did forget to mention that Bob (Houlihan) Wells also was a fill in weatherman at TV8 during that time also.
at 7PM right after the CBS Evening News was T or C-I watched it faithfully-sponsored by GLOBAL Moving & Van Lines ("Next Time Call GLOBAL!") I'd love to see some reruns of that!
@audiophile55 I lived south of Cleveland at that time and remember that too. I also remember Goddard doing the wather report on April 3, 1974 during the super tornado outbreak of that day - he showed footage of vehicles trying to outran the F5 tornado in Xenia that afternoon.
One thing I meant to add to the below-this being 12/23-I recall Murray Stewart heading off a newscast on a 12/23 long ago referring to the day as Christmas Eve-Eve. Only time I'd ever heard the day referred to as such & every year when this day rolls around that memory still comes to mind-RIP Murray-we loved ya!
I believe the v/o for the WJW's "Get it all and Then Some" campaign ad was the late Joe Grant. BTW, I miss Big Chuck and Lil John, I wish WJW would've kept the show in reruns. Especially the skits.
WJW used a sans-serif typeface for their “ei8ht” logos in 1966 and 1995. The logos for KFMB and WROC (and which WSVI copied) had a totally different look and feel to them.
They were friday late night movie show host on the local CBS station.Big chuck worked at tv8 in the 60's and was asked to be in a skit by TV8 horror movie host ghoulardi.Ghoulardi left in the late 60's and later became the voice of the ABC network.Bob Houlihan and Big Chuck took over as host.Lil john seen here replaced Houlihan around 1980.They recently ended this show after a 41 year run.
Gee, I didn't know that or I forgot (I was a teenager by then). And I didn't know Murray killed himself. Seems like another sad tale in the timeline of Cleveland television..
if anyone can tell me where i can see old footage from Cleveland's own Captain Penny PLEASE let me know. I still remember the whistling melody from his Pooch Parade segment. Thanks for the Big Chuck...kielbasa kid episodes would also be greatly appreciated!
Yes. Rumor is that Fox wanted the show gone because it doesn't understand the whole Cleveland thing and doesn't care to learn. It's very unfortunate but those of us who grew up during that era have the memories and of course there's RU-vid.
I'm guessing since the clip is from 1971 (38 years ago), he has to be in his late sixties or early seventies, and even though he's at WKYC, I doubt he'll be on local TV much longer..
And after getting rid of BC&LJ, Fox sells off the station less than a year later! Interesting that (under the new ownership) their 1999 Holiday Special was aired on WJW 4 times over the last week.

IIRC, Merv Griffin moved from Ch 8 to 5 and back at least once or twice during his syndicated run in the 70s/80s. I think he was on 8 mostly in the 70's, though.
OK so Mer V Griffin used to come on Ch 8...I only remember when it came on Ch 5 in the afternoons after the soaps went off. *pre Oprah*...the music is cute...I dont' remember it...I DO however remember the old City Camera shows with McArthur Park as the theme. Now refresh my memory please, was Dave Buckel also the host of the show Public Square? I remember the theme song was Weschester Lady by Bob James.
I sure remember Murray Stewart. Did he really commit suicide? I also remember, very, very vividly, when Marty Ross passed away, how hard Dick Goddard cried while doing the weather. I was at my grandmothers home when this happened. That is one of those things you never forget.
Holy Crap! Did you check out the young Jeff Maynor and Dick Goddard? Truth or consequences was Bob Barker's old show pre-Price is Right. But one thing never changed--Phil Donahue is still a liberal weenie.
That clip with Donahue was from his days in Dayton, Ohio when he was making his name interviewing the likes of Ralph Nader and famed atheist Madeline Murray O'Hare. He would later become the bigger liberal weinie in his moves to Chicago and NYC.
