Being part of the WMO Regional Scientific Forum: "Uniting minds in the pursuit of knowledge", this session explored the role of social science communication in enhancing the public's understanding of scientific issues and informing science-based policies, with a focus on hydro-meteorology and environmental sciences. Through expert discussions and demonstrations, the session addressed how effective communication can bridge the gap between science, policymakers, and the public to tackle complex societal challenges.
Co-chairs:
Dr. Jutta Thielen del Pozo: Head of the Scientific Development Programmes Unit at the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre, leading efforts to advance scientific research and innovation across Europe.
Mr. Murat Altinyollar: Interim Acting Director of the External Relations Department at the Turkish State Meteorological Service, responsible for fostering international collaborations and strengthening partnerships in meteorological service.
Keynote Speaker:
Helen Roberts (UK Met Office): A socio-meteorologist dedicated to ensuring weather forecasts are actionable and improve public safety through clear, effective communication.
Panel Members:
Tanja Cegnar (Slovenian Environment Agency): Chair of the European Meteorological Society (EMS) Media and Communication team, organizer of communication sessions at EMS annual meetings.
Milan Kalas (CEO, private consultancy company): Civil engineer and hydrologist, a key developer of European and Global Flood Awareness Systems at the Joint Research Centre.
Dr. Mariana de Brito (Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research): Group leader with expertise in data analytics, natural language processing, and machine learning for hazard and sustainability research.
Corina Negrea (Radio Romania, Cultural Channel): Science section producer and anchor, specializing in making scientific topics accessible to the public.
Special Contributor:
Professor Alberto (Sant’Anna School of Advanced Studies, Pisa): Professor of Moral Philosophy and Climate Ethics at the Institute of Law, Politics, and Development, focusing on the ethical dimensions of climate change and policy.
Photographers & Artists:
Mr. Stefan Razvan, Mr. Sergiu Pavel, Mrs. Irina Alexandru, and Mr. George Alexandru contributed visual and artistic perspectives to enhance the communication of scientific themes through creative mediums.
This session aimed to advance the dialogue on how social science communication can empower policymakers and the public with scientific knowledge, ensuring the successful implementation of science-based solutions to environmental and societal challenges.
