A short history of Rolling Stone Magazine is in order . Originally, before it became just a cooperate rag as it is today,. it was well respected publication. It was a great honor to be on its cover, or anywhere in it for that matter. That must be kept in mind when listening to this song to understand it

A great giggle is that when this song became a huge national hit, Rolling Stone Magazine ran the group's photo right up front under the headline, "What's-their-name gets their picture on the cover." What a great goof! Did he still make five copies for his mother?

That was nothing. There was another alternate video of this song on RU-vid awhile ago, but I think it got taken down - think there’s a partial video up, but it’s not the whole thing. But it was maybe twice as long as this one, partly because the bassist was kinda tripping out and held notes for ridiculously long periods before going into another sprint

Dr Hook's first Top 40 hit was "Sylvia's Mother", which is completely different. It's a sad, sweet story of unrequited love. And it shows what kind of a range these guys had. However, I have to admit, my first exposure to them was on a PBS Special, hosted by Dick Cavett, called "VD Blues", in which they sang a song titled "Don't give a dose to the one you love most". Needless to say, I fell in love with them. As you go through their catalog, I would suggest some of their early work, like "Last Morning", "The Ballad of . . .", "Things I Didn't Say", "Carry me, Carrie", "Cooky & Lila", "The Millionaire", "Levitate", "Queen of the Silver Dollar", and, of course, "Sylvia's Mother". They have a number of other good songs as well, but not all he songs on the first 4 albums (Dr Hook, Sloppy Seconds, Belly Up, and Bankrupt) are, shall we say, RU-vid Friendly. I personally think "Freaker's Ball" is absolutely hilarious, but RU-vid might not think so. I suppose "I got stoned and I missed it" might slip by, and maybe "If I'd only Come and Gone", but I doubt they'd like "Penicillin Penny", and I know "Get my Rocks Off" would definitely trigger some people. But, hey, it's all just wacky fun by a bunch of 70s stoners. 😁

My all-time favorite Dr Hook song is Only Sixteen, a beautiful song about young love. It reminds me of a similar themed song from The Sound of Music, Sixteen Going On Seventeen. A (fictionalized) WWII themed musical based on a real family. Edit: Be cautious diving down that Dr Hook rabbit hole. They have some songs that will scandalize you, but they’ll have you singing the lyrics later. 😆

It was a gimme that a few months after this song was released, they made the cover of The Rolling Stone. A great diamond in the rough, from the early 70s, is 'Oh Babe, What Would You Say' by Hurricane Smith.

One of my favourite Dr. Hook video is where they do a Doo-Wop Medley. All of the band members were extremely talented👍

Amber: Speaking of Shel Silverstein - you need to check out the book: "Where The Sidewalk Ends" - I know you like poetry - and, the poems in there: your girls are just about the right age to enjoy a LOT of them....some have much deeper meanings. My daughter, when she was a girl, enjoyed that book, together! He also wrote the book: "I'm Looking For My Missing Piece" - a CLASSIC in our house!! STILL love this song, after all these years!! SO MUCH FUN!!! GREAT reaction!! HUGS! ❤❤❤❤❤

Having hippie parents. This was a favorite of mine and my sister. Imagine girls around the age of y'all's begging for this song to be played 😂 we would dance to it in the living room.

Thank you for finally getting to this one. Love it!! This is the version of Dr Hook that we all fell in love with. Your next reaction should be The Millionaire or Queen of the Silver Dollar.

It doesn't seem like queen of the silver dollar gets the attention it deserves. There are 2 damaged souls, the Queen and the narrator/singer.

OMG...The first concert I ever went to. 1977 and in the 7th grade, my big sister took me to the Dr Hook concert in Alexandria Louisiana. When we got there, she disappeared and I was on my own and in shock and aw (think that would ever happen today?). 13 years old and on my own at a concert!!!!! And what was that funny smell ;) I have a special place in my heart for Dr Hook. Thank y'all. BTW I loved how this song has the "great" guitar solo and the next line is...."Aw that's beautiful man". Haha, classic.

Dr. Hook “Medley” (live) is also a good one as it showcases two other band mates as well as Dennis and Ray. They go through verses of a few 50’s songs 🎶

Nice reaction video! Glad you are showing Dr Hook some love. I've spent some time playing music with Ray Sawyer RIP and he was the most unpretentious and nicest musician I've known. Also he was one of the funniest people I've ever met.

Just a fun, good song. I was in a bar band in the late 80s early 90s and we’d play this from time to time and it always went over well.

Their shows were legendary & for many of us given their constant touring in the 70’s and early 80’s, they were the first concert we saw. I was 12 when my brother took me & have many friends who also saw Dr. Hook first. It really makes you appreciate the magic of a live concert & being there not watching it. They covered the March 29, 1973 issue of Rolling Stone. Another great hit is Sharing the Night Together.

If you'd done this reaction sooner, you would have recognized the song when you watched Almost Famous. When Russell tells the band that they're going to be on the cover of Rolling Stone Magazine, they burst into this song. It always makes me smile!
