Quick range trip for the A1 upper. Had some bobbles early on, but I'm chalking that up to break in period for now. Put about 140 rounds through it just to check function basically. Last 50 or so rounds were trouble free.
Ammo used: Tulammo, ZQI, PPU, Wolf Gold, Monarch, American Eagle, Brown bear.
Mags used: D&H, Hexmag, Magpul, Lancer, Doublestar.

Taiwan Army will substitute new self-made XT-112 assault rifle for T91 rifle which are currently used by the troops. The new XT-112 assault rifle has a built-in reflective inner red dot and an advanced combat optical sight. Its effective and precise shooting distance reaches 1200 meters. It is an assault rifle with the world's longest distance in precise shooting currently.

Because the T-91 is piston-driven, I guess it's OK to use the steel ammo on it. However, since most of the steel 5.56 ammo available in the US is made in Russia, I wouldn't recommend using it with direct-impingement semi-autos. The Russian powder is much dirtier comparing to American, European and Israeli made powder, so it leaves tons of fouling and residual particles inside of the semi-auto rifles, which, in turn, may lead to serious malfunctions.

I had a similar issue with my 6.5 Grendel upper (not the WPA 16"), the extractor spring had a plastic buffer or something and it wasn't allowing the spring to compress all the way for the extractor claw to grip the rim. Took it out and zero issues since. Just a suggestion.

Glad you have that shooting. It looks like this upper needs almost 100 rounds break in after lubricating. Would you recommend doing a barrel breaking before shooting it for the first time?
@darink300zx
@darink300zx 7 лет назад
Yeah, it took almost if not 100 rounds before it felt like it was functioning reliably. I don't know that you need to do anything more than what I did. Just take everything apart and wipe off the oil it's shipped in. Relubricate with the oil/grease of your choice then take it out and shoot it. I've read that the gas piston parts only need a thin film, if any, oil but you may want to put plenty on the BCG. I've heard other reports of the chambers being very tight on these, which would explain most of the issues I was having.

Yeah, I think it'll be fine, I'll have it out to the range for some groupings and accuracy tests soon. I hadn't really thought much about getting a piston AR until this one came along. I just liked the military heritage of the T91. This system has been in service for over 40 years, being first adopted as the T65 in 1976. The design is proven. That's why I ordered one. I eventually plan to make this one look like a T91 as much as possible.

Interesting setup although not sure if I would spend $600 on something made in Taiwan. I would be too worried about spare parts such as springs, bolt carrier or just parts for the bcg such as an extractor. (shooting steel cased ammo is hard on your extractor)

I was wondering if you had more issues using the rem 223 caliber versus the nato 5.56. since 5.56 is marked on the receivers.The tolerances seem to be very tight on this upper.. Was wondering if you have updated the buffer spring to a heavier spring ..
@darink300zx
@darink300zx 6 лет назад
I've had it out a couple times since this video and have only had continued function issues with Tulammo. I think it was .223 remington. I didn't change the buffer spring or make any other changes to the rifle, I just cleaned it up very well and lubed it and such between sessions. The chamber was tight and I think it just needed a little break in. I do plan to do a follow up/review video of this upper, just haven't gotten to it yet.
@pinger5563
@pinger5563 7 лет назад
The only thing I can think of that could have cause the issues is possibly had the gas piston system lubed, I was always told lube the BCG but the piston system should be dry like on a striker fired pistol striker chamber. Just a thought, I would also do a extractor upgrade on it, with a BCM extractor upgrade kit .
@darink300zx
@darink300zx 7 лет назад
For now I'm attributing all the issues to the chamber being so tight and needing breaking in, and (possibly) an issue I discovered after this shooting session. The hand guard was not installed quite right and it was causing the upper to bind on the lower at the pivot pin. I doubt this caused the problem, but it's possible. I haven't had a chance to shoot it since I fixed it, but we'll see. The gas piston system wasn't dry, but barely any lube on it. I wiped off the excess oil that it came shipped in and ran a rag over it that had some CLP on it, that's it. So I don't think that would have been it. Another thought I had when reviewing the video and that I didn't think of at the time of shooting it is that in general 5.56 nato rounds ran problem free whereas the issues were mostly with 223 rem rounds. So maybe this had something to do with it too. I hadn't thought of changing out the extractor. I had one guy say that the gun was overgassed, based on the ejection pattern, but I don't think it is. I guess it could be and I actually plan to bring some different weight buffers next time I shoot it to play with if it continues to have any issues. But since it was running pretty good toward the end of the video I don't expect the problems to continue. Once we have some nicer weather here and other things work out I'll get it back to the range and run some more 5.56 nato through it and see if maybe it prefers that. Thanks for the input.
@pinger5563
@pinger5563 7 лет назад
Well I hope you got it resolved. I thought of a few other issues that could have caused this. I myself don't believe in guns needing a so called break-in period. If manufactured correctly they should perform flawlessly. I heard you mention no forward assist, there should be a grove on the Bolt carrier where your thumb can be used to push the bolt into battery. I also don't think firearms should be ammo picky either. I would also replace the ejector spring on ejector rod on the bolt. From what I looked up on that upper you have to manually adjust the gas system or can do it manually. The barrel might not been installed correctly either. Good luck with it, I myself have been interested in this upper.
@darink300zx
@darink300zx 7 лет назад
Pinger 556 yeah, I agree breaking in shouldn't be needed, but I've read reports from others that have gotten these uppers that their chambers were tight too and needed a few rounds down range for them to work well. I also agree about ammo picky firearms, but since I bought this just because I wanted something different and don't intend for it to be a "go to" gun for anything, I won't mind if it prefers NATO ammo. Stay tuned. I hope to have another range trip and more of a review on this in the next few days or a week.

Yung Blac this is the 16” barrel. I think the 14.5 would be truer to the actual t91, but of course you’d either have to pin/weld a 1.5” muzzle break on it or do an sbr or pistol build. I also have the 12” barrel upper that I built into a pistol and I really like it. I’m working on doing a video on that upper just haven’t gotten around to it yet.

Gabriel Silva lol, did you watch the video? I wasn't riding the bolt down, I was pulling back the bolt and letting go, just as effective if not more so than hitting the bolt release. Ahhh, I see. I did use google translate. I wasn't sure what he was referring to with the T65K2. The Jordanian royal Guard has a high rating of A1 T91. The Jordanian military compares Taiwan T91, US M16A2 with Russian AK47 rifle, and finds that AK47 shooting accuracy is poor.. after testing, and T91 shooting precision is far better than AK47, and bullet penetration is higher than M16...T91>AK47

劉俊傑 the ak47 hasn’t been in military use by Russia since the 70’s they use the AK74 using the 5.45 round which is just as if not more accurate as armalite pattern rifles also the US is using m4’s and m16a4’s now

How would you sling this upper?
@darink300zx
@darink300zx 7 лет назад
I haven't worked out a sling option for it yet. I think the intent is to sling it through the loop on the spot there at the gas port/front sight, but that is also the part you push in and turn to unlock the gas piston assembly. I'm not sure I'd trust slinging it here as it could move under the right conditions and unlock the gas piston assembly. I may try one there and see if I have any issues with it. Whatever buttstock you use would determine the other sling point. Since it uses a standard AR buffer tube, you could always mount one of the single point sling retaining plates there.

Sorry~ whould you mind also testing after 90 bullet, barrel temperature ? Because at Taiwan some people say after 90 round this gun need take rest.
@darink300zx
@darink300zx 7 лет назад
I'll try to do that the next time I have it out. I'd say that 90 rounds is in full auto or bursts though, I rarely shoot that fast where it would be an issue. I'll try it though the next time I'm out with her.

Is that possible to auto shot by 1 hand??? cuz the original Taiwanese army T-91 can do that.

Not sure what you mean, but if you mean will it work with a full-auto lower, then yeah, it will. I've seen other you-tubers shoot these uppers on full auto lowers.

David Belk II I got mine at aim surplus, but Atlantic firearms and I think J&G sales is also carrying them. You may have to sign up to be notified when they are back in stock.

Your lucky you didn’t have the bolt carrier that has the cutout underneath the firing pin. Your hammer could still hit the pin went it’s not locked in the chamber

I just put a video up today on My channel Coloma resale you can check it out if you want But the gist of it is that upper failed the headspace test Have you had a chance to headspace yours?
@darink300zx
@darink300zx 7 лет назад
matthew hoover no I haven't. I have seen reports of these having tight chambers, I think mine did which explained the first few rounds not wanting to chamber.
@darink300zx
@darink300zx 7 лет назад
matthew hoover will do. I don't have any gauges, but I suppose I could try a different bolt or two from other ARs.

It may be a bit, but I will have more videos of this gun up on here, thanks for subscribing. I got to thinking about this some more. I have several AR15s and have always bought pre-assembled uppers that have been test functioned, so I've never measured headspace. Just put them on a lower and shoot, no problems. All of my uppers are either 223 wylde chamber or 5.56 nato chamber. I've never had an issue with them shooting either 223 rem or 5.56 nato. This one from Wolf is also 5.56 nato chambered. I got to reviewing the range footage again and realized that of all the issues I had at the range only one (a failure to pickup a round from the mag) was from 5.56 nato. Most of the malfs were from 223 rem ammo. Next time at the range I'll explore this a bit more and see if that may have something to do with it? I don't know just some thoughts.

Colt is my favorite brand. I have two 6920s, a 6933, AR15A4 and a 6940P that I have a Wolf T91 upper on the way for. Like I said, Colt is my favorite, but lets not pretend they are the very best and never have any issues. Both of your stupid, biased comments that aren't backed up by anything meaningful prove absolutely nothing. I certainly wouldn't use the cheapest shit ammo and some crappy mags to make a video of like the OP though.

LOL. I love getting expert opinions in the comments of my videos. It works just fine with what I have. I have stopped buying Tulammo though, it's given me issues with other rifles as well.

I just wonder if you had started with a new Gen 3 Pmag and basic M855 full power 5.56 ammo if you wouldn't have had the original issued. How do you like the upper so far now that its running well? I'm planning on picking one up for my Colt Piston Carbine 6940P lower very soon. Also, what weight buffer and spring are you using?
