In 1989 I hitchhiked from Perth to Broome in Western Australia, I was young and dumb. It took me a full week of hitching and covered something like 2500km. I met some amazing people, some very weird people, some very drunk people (still driving mind you) and some very high people. I also saw some outstanding wildlife and countryside............. thankfully the Wolf Creek films hadn't been made then, cos if they had, I'd have been on the Bus. End of....
Oh, and the real backpacker murderer hadn't been caught then either, nor had I heard about him....... luckily he was prowling the other side of the country from WA at this time.
Wolf Creek sort of freaked me out as when I was 21 I had a bad hitchhiking experience. Was going one way and this old dude slowed down a bit as he passed me and gave me a look that was like death itself. 10 minutes later I could see a car coming the other way and it was his car (as it made a distinctive sound). I dived into the long grass on the side of the road and hid. His car (Chrysler with a horse float on it) slowed right down where I was and stopped. The bloke had a "Merv Hughes" moustache and a shitty Western type hat on. He was mega-pissed and shouted "you f***ing lucky little c***!". He then sped off. This was between Henty and Culcairn on the Olympic Highway 1990. A few years later I recognised him on the news as Ivan Milat who I have found owned a similar Chrysler at the time. As I was in Western Australia at the time I sent a report of what happened to crime stoppers WA and never heard anything.
Yes, something I'll never forget. Too many coincidences for it not to have been him. The Olympic highway was quite a bit South of where he supposedly operated but I also read that missing people cases seemed to follow places where he'd worked. Disappointing the police took no notice of my details etc because it happened in NSW and first time I reported I was in WA, then second time VIC. Also, found out later (when at uni) people had disappeared along the Olympic Highway which begs the question as to why police have not looked into it further. I would like to be shown his cars in a line up as could spot the one he used no problem, same as the horse float. I feel there are a lot more cases tied to this scum than what people realise.
This is all fun and games, but Ivan Millat who this is based on, really did do some horrible things in real life to back packers after they got in his vehicle willingly.
