Wolf in Sheep's Clothing! - Debris Carrying Lacewing Larva

If you’ve ever noticed little pieces of lichen walking about on the tree trunk, your eyes were not playing tricks on you. You have found none other than the debris carrying lacewing larva, also known as the Junk bug. These insects are the larva or immature stage of the elegant lacewing. Being carnivores, they camouflage themselves up and hunt among the trucks of trees and upon bushes and plants by sweeping their heads back and forth as the search for food. They will take bits of lichen and debris and stick it on their backs. They do this to disguise themselves. Sometimes they even take the hollow corpses of their discarded meals and stick them there, also. Imagine if mammals did that. This gruesome act is akin to a wolf in sheeps clothing.

I have a word of advice. I’ve always been amazed with these strange little bugs. While letting one crawl on me one time it felt a strange tickle, and then it actually started feeling a little painful. It was biting me! Later I noticed the area to be swollen and really itchy!

Amazing Video! I have a short story for you: I was living in Thailand and we had a cold snap for a few days. I kept waking up with irritated skin and started to have this sensation of something crawling on me. When I looked I couldn't see anything on or in the bed. That is, until one night, when a fuzz, that couldn't have been more than a millimeter long landed on my phone's screen. It was moving. I Spent the next few days trying to convince my husband that there were little critters in our apartment and I was trying to figure out what they were. I was finally able to get a shot of one with my macro lens but it was still only about a millimeter in length and it had fuzz all over it. I posted to a entomology forum and finally had my answer! They were lacewing fly larvae! The cold weather drove them inside our apartment. About two days later I found one of the largest (about 3 millimeters) and was able to convince my landlord they were there and that I wasn't crazy. He had already agreed to let us move apartments, but you should've seen the look on his face when he saw the little bugger! Priceless.

What a great story! I am surprised they were indoors, though. There are certain aphids that look like floating cotton, those are pretty fun, too. Actually, what you found sounds like them.

I'm a biology major and have never seen them in the larvae stage, nor a lacewing that would be alive. Lil fella was just walking around on my roof with a bunch of dust on his back. I decided to make a little terrain for him in a glass jar and got some bugs for him to feast on. My plan is to get him to cocoon and hatch so I can flex to my teacher about it. We'll see how it'll go.

Thank you for the explanation , when I saw this tiny cloud of white fluff I couldn't believe that it was walking, not a breadcrumb moved by the wind😅.in your documentary I saw white fluffy material on the plant the Ant is walking over, maybe that's what my Lacewing was carrying. My Lacewing was at Colonial lake ,Trenton, NJ

We have those all over the oak trees in Louisiana this time of year. The wind takes them and falls on us, they bite and leaves a burning sensation with a small red inflamed area.

I think the reason you noticed those two different insects on the same tree is due to just their passiveness towards each other and food locale. The big bug probably doesn't care or think the garbage bug is a threat and walks on, meanwhile the garbage bug know more than it can chew. I mean, the garbage bug is trying not be noticed by big predators to begin with.

About two years ago I was walking on a path and looked at a tree covered in lichen, I had to do a double take because I noticed a bunch of it was moving and I thought I was crazy. Figured they were bugs and took some videos of them, but I never flipped them over or even realized they had jaws like that. Cool to know they were lacewings too! Maybe I'll find them again one day in that same spot and get a better look.

Greetings Chris! Thank you for this great post. I've watched other videos you have made and really enjoy them. I would consider myself a naturalist and love exploring the world of nature around me, no matter how small. While I was in my backyard killing Spotted Lanternflies on my mature Maple this morning, I noticed a lot of the Lacewings Larvae moving up the tree trunk. I was already familiar with the "Junk Bug" but had never seen this many in one place. Like the comment you make in your post, I thought that there must be some connection with the presence of the Spotted Lanternflies. They have finally infested the area of Southern NJ where I live. I just pray that they don't kill my beautiful Maples that I cherish.

I wonder if the lacewings are attracted to trees with spotted lanternflies because the lanternflies produce so much honeydew, way more than your typical aphid it seems. Seems like they would be way too small to go after SLF but maybe they’re confused by the honeydew, looking for their actual prey, the aphids. Great shots!
@chrisegnoto
@chrisegnoto 3 года назад
Hmm, that really is an interesting thought. You should mention that to some of the people that study them and see what they think. Pretty cool thought, even if it turns out wrong, it's a good thought. Thanks.

@chrisegnoto
@chrisegnoto 3 года назад
Not exactly. Leather and fur count as a first line of shelter as defense against the elements - clothing. These carcasses are more a way of disguising yourself with bodies to sneak in. Like all the parts we don't eat...eyes, skeletal, organs we might not eat, all that good stuff. Now imagine something like a cat or a bear doing that or even a human cannibal

Awesome video Chris! Lacewing larva are so cool, I’ve always been fascinated by species like these that adorn themselves with debris for camouflage. It’s the caddisfly that does something similar right? And obviously decorator crabs behave similarly as well. I wonder if that is considered convergent evolution, I’ll have to look that up! Thanks for another fascinating episode. - Harrison and Evan
@chrisegnoto
@chrisegnoto 5 лет назад
Yes, the caddisfly disguises itself. It does so in the form of little tubes made of debris or stone. I actually had a couple of these in captivity and they used materials that I placed in their habitat. It was pretty cool, but the water needed more O2. I didn't know as much then as I do now :/ Those decorator crabs are amazing. There is a spider that sort of does a similar thing, I think. Thanks for watching, great to hear from you!

If you would put some time and research in your videos you would realize it’s not a lacewing it’s a slyrking lace wings have see through wings with laces in them and they don’t even do this you can tell it’s not a lacewing because it physically doesn’t have any wings and it’s legs are way to thick why don’t you do some research and easily find the correct awnser search up lace wing l and you won’t find any results saying that they cover them selves with plant particles search slyrking on the other hand does cover itself in plant particles buddy
