Actually, I think The Plague Dogs book had a happier ending than Martin Rosen's adaptation.

Actually fun fact. The Martin Rosen ending was the original ending. Richard Adams wrote an ending where the dogs was saved only after pushed by many people to do so. but the true ending is the dogs end up drowning

I don't agree that the statement "a product of its time" is invalid. I can see why some people are getting tired of that statement but it applies to this series. This wasn't published during the 2000s so yes, there will be some dated ideologies but that does not mean we should deny that they existed; we simply need to understand the context of when it was written and published.
@SilverStarlingsDen
@SilverStarlingsDen 3 года назад
That is fair! I personally believe it should still not be used as an excuse but I do agree we need to recognize when a piece was written and why things were written to move forward.

I believe Death of the Author is a lot more complex. We can always come up with our headcanons and “fix fic” (which, by the way, is great), but I don’t think someone’s work can truly be separated from the person who wrote it. I highly recommend Lindsay Ellis’ videos on the subject.

@@SilverStarlingsDen You are absolutely right. If I had time I would, but as a fulltime college student I have little free time and would rather spend it doing something I know I will enjoy. As it stands right now that includes reading though some book series I wish to finish such as the Testing Trilogy by Joelle Charbonneau or The Darkest Minds series by Alexandra Bracken. I would actually recommend reading though both series they have wild ideas in changing societies I believe you may enjoy. To address the main point though, I have seen two of the Narnia movies for now and, may read them in the future. I agree that someone such as me should look at both sides of an argument before drawing their own conclusion. If you were to modernize this tale yourself, what is the biggest thing you might change in the Chronicles of Narnia?

Wow, I never realized Narnia was THIS bad, like I knew it had some signs of the time but I didn’t realize it was so bad, I’m glad I only got through The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe and The Horse and his Boy before I got bored and then never went back because it was too preachy (which is ironic because I’m Christian but I feel that’s valid in this case)
@SilverStarlingsDen
@SilverStarlingsDen 3 года назад
It definitely did not age well, especially in today's society. While it is important to recognize these parts, I feel it is also good to read or look into the works to understand them as well. This could mean applying death to an author if the author has passed, or researching the series without supporting it if the author is alive. Do what you feel is best and educate yourself to know what is going on.

As someone who merely heard of Narnia here and there, but never read any of the books or watched any of the movies, it's not that hard to acknowledge that some/a lot of famous people were horrible, especially if they're from times when it was the norm. I never knew what Narnia was about, nor what connections it had with Christianity of all things (and also, Narnia was one of the things my religious mother would've banned from the house as something satanic not because of the racist, sexist and homophobic elements, but because of the fantasy elements). You're also the first one addressing the beliefs of the now dead author and how it affects your experience reading the book, which so horribly make sense, I may never end up picking up a book unless it was for research purposes or rewritten, as stories often get. It's easier to separate the work from the author, or rather, practice "death of the author" when the author managed to make a trap to lure children into the author's worldview, especially if said worldview spits on human dignity like that. As someone who used to be homophobic before joining the furry fandom and experiencing that the very people I was taught to treat as "sinners" were probably among the coolest people I've ever met, I know how blind such deadly prejudices can make people. Making me even more regretful that I ever even considered homophobia as something I agreed with. We are still recovering from at least 2000 years of history full of the bad prejudices and injustices endorsed by those in power, especially due to how slowly church and state were separated, and we are yet to see if we can fully recover from it instead of our successors continuing, or doubling the hate. To think that Narnia was a ploy to be used for manipulaion into that mindset is a red flag for me, and I would suggest someone make a completely rewritten version of it. It's a sad fact of life that people with such warped mindsets get to even influence our culture, made even sadder that Harry Potter, the fantasy series a friend of mine said helped people discover thier sexualities and gender identities, is now spitting on those same people. Which isn't much shock for me, who never managed to enjoy Harry Potter in any form, after all, as I said, we are recovering (hopefully) from all the pointless hate we gave our non-cookie cutter fellows. And never forget that Lovecraft was racist, whose work still inspires many to this day, (including the videogame "Quake", which is one of my favorites), and I mean, Lovecraftian influence is everywhere. I recently heard that even Dr. Seuss had a bad racist behind his mask. So yeah... being human kinda sucks. And I say that as someone, who was raised in a christian household (tho the church that defined our household was no ordinary church, much more televangelism neo-pentecostal, if you get what I'm saying), became Christian for a brief period, only to realize my freedom is more valuable than servitude to a church, going from Christian to Agnostic/Deist, to Atheist with a pint of paganism (don't ask), all to the dismay to my mother, who nagged me to go back to that horrible church for years before giving up. What spot religion had in me was replaced by the furry fandom, and even there, I'm a loner-ish. As the guy who went through that transformation, I say, that I am constantly dissapointed by society in so many forms, and a vast majority coming from... who guessed it, the fundamentalists, while having to understand there are good christians out there. I learned more from the very "secular" people and their unchained if not free from drama culture than I learned from any religious source, opening my eyes that I, as well as many more, have been living in the "Matrix" all along. The matrix being metaphorical of the system and beliefs of a society deeply influenced by a religion which tolerated no deviation from the norms it helped set up. If that's what Narnia was meant to aid, I dread how many people let themselves be influenced by it. But there's one thing I like to preach myself: Follow not organised religion, for it is no more than a single person wanting to bend everyone to his will. Instead, explore and discover yourself, and you may see a spirit you'd be willing to live by. No one can teach spiritually to you better than yourself. It's kinda flawed apparently, and maybe not a good idea, but hey, the reason we are here is because organized religion led us here. So why not criticize it and encourage people to break away from it, and if they so want spirituality, explore their own rather than choose from already established templates. A pantheon's power is given to them by their followers, and even that is more abstract, than a physical reality. But then again, I found mine. 3 words: Unity, Duty, Destiny. No homophobic message, or any useless hate, simply encouraging teamwork, accepting that the path of life does end somewhere, and that you shall contribute what you can to your cause. Much better than telling people to live 1 way and forget, or even punish everything else. Also a joke: the very people telling people not to be gay/trans are the very same people who break a vast majority of the rules of the book they claim to liv by, making me question why they are such a powerful presence in society...

Interesting video! I haven't read past the first book (honestly I like the movies way better than what I heard happens in the books) but I had no idea things got /this/ messed up, though there was the obvious sexism in the first book with the whole "thou shalt not partake in battle" surrounding Lucy and Susan. What you fail to bring up around Death of the Author, however, is that it varies per case. C.S Lewis is dead, so at the very least he won't be profiting from it anymore. However, you also brought up the case of Harry Potter. In such a case, her meaning behind her work actively impacts the books still. She's obviously still alive, so doing such a thing as buying her books and then donating to charity still means you're giving her your money. Her shitty attitude towards trans people and of course the racism and antisemitism also shines through in her works, so you can't simply separate her works from her personal views. Actively consuming and participating in her works is still giving her a platform, which is just harmful. I get that this video is about Narnia and not HP, but since you brought it up and you mention Death of the Author I kind of hoped you'd delve a little deeper into different cases.
@SilverStarlingsDen
@SilverStarlingsDen 3 года назад
hi there, glad you liked the video! I believe there may be a bit of miscommunication here but I am sorry if this did upset people with how we went about the video and the theme of "Death of the author". When we were saying to donate the money a person had spent on books/movies to a charity, we meant for authors who were no longer living. It is also why we suggested borrowing media from libraries and other people rather than buying them. these are different methods than what we would do for authors who are still alive and profiting from their works. As you said JK is still alive and should not be supported. Buying her work, following her media presence and/or giving her support in any way is validating her views and opinions. Her transphobic, racist and anti-semite are clear and very damaging, and Midnight and I do not stand by them. We only brought J.K in as another example to demonstrate a modern-day example of these horrible views being used in a creator's work. if we were going to focus on how to go about JK we both agree her works, media, and books should be avoided at all cost and help others spread awareness about these themes in her books and her viewpoints. However with how long the video was turning out, we thought it was best to keep it mostly about C.S Lewis, I may do a full video on Death of the Author and cover different ideas, but the purpose of this video was more to cover what we found in Narnia rather than HP. I will remember this for later and try and put this into my future works

20:21 The actual definition of ‘queer’ was ‘strange’ or ‘unusual’ but it started being used as an insult to the LGBT+ community and has recently been reclaimed as a neutral/positive slang word. He was definitely homophobic, but at the time queer just meant odd and had no other connotations. Correction: It was beginning to be popularized as a slang term for gay around that time (Webster’s Dictionary recognized it as a slang term for gay in 1949) but since its formal definition was (and actually still is) odd or strange, paired with the way it’s used in the books, I’m inclined to believe the author meant it in the sense of odd or strange. He was indeed horribly bigoted, and I think it’s great that you dedicated a video to discussing his terrible views, I’m just that this was not one of the reasons.
@SilverStarlingsDen
@SilverStarlingsDen 3 года назад
Yes but when C.S.Lewis wrote the book in the 1940's it was indeed used as a derogatory word for the LGBTQ+ community. Originally the word maybe had been used for strange but at the time it did actually have something behind it.

I thought the Telmarines being Spanish/Moorish was something the movie added, am I mistaken? It's been ages since I read the book. As for Susan, her fate is pretty clear if you get the subtext; Susan abandoned Narnia (Christianity) because she discovered sex/sexuality (Peter makes a flippant remark about her being "caught up in a world of lipstick and nylons" or something to that effect). Lewis was very uncomfortable about female sexuality, in case it wasn't obvious.
