Wolff Responds: Hard Lessons from Trump's Regime

In this Wolff Responds, Prof. Wolff underscores the lessons learned from the Trump Administration so as to not repeat the same mistakes again. Wolff argues that capitalism in trouble saves itself by making adjustments, by turning to fascism in an attempt to explain the inequality and crisis, by blaming any thing other than capitalism to take the attention off of system change as a solution. Scapegoating was a tactic used by Trump's regime to explain away the decline of American capitalism.

Dr. Cornell West just has a plain room with stacks of books. I noticed a table, but almost all of the floor space from floor to more than half way up the walls and minus a narrow path, all books. I love books and the older I get the more I just borrow them from the library or have electronic copies, but I hate the e-books and will listen to audio, but still won't commit to them long term. I painfully parted with all save my most treasured hard copies.

Many top academics and climate scientists from around the world are suggesting that humankind is witnessing the decline and near term collapse of civilization as we now know it due to the self-imposed problems we've brought upon ourselves. The economic system and the greed of capitalism have only exacerbated these issues related to our existential crises that are obviously playing out as we speak. As climate catastrophe and global economic desperation accelerate, along with an ongoing novel virus and the loss of basic habitat compromising our ability to grow food at scale, fascistic leaders will likely continue to appear while the remainder of our species clamors for the remaining life-sustaining resources left to maintain some semblance of basic survival.

_"Other trumps are coming."_ My bet is on Sen. Cotton and/or Sen. Hawley running in 2024. IMO if Pres. Biden doesn't make big changes like a progressive GND with M4A he'll be a one term POTUS. Where Trump was incompetent these men are not. They'd be efficient autocrats. My bet is Pres. Biden will offer "weak tea" and lose in 2024. My only hope is that he considers how he'll be remembered and embraces the lessons of FDR.

@@arkinyte13 _"I honestly don’t think [Biden will] finish his first term..."_ You could be quite right. Obama was in top shape when he started and look how he finished. Biden is 78 and Obama was 44 at the start of their terms. _"Kamala is who needs to learn her lesson."_ Looking at her record which is pretty bad I suspect she'll do what she's always done and tote the neoconservative line. _"Give us plebs something substantial like Medicare 4 all, gnd, debt forgiveness or we suffer another trump."_ I saddens me to say I think you're right. The only tweaks I'd make would be adding a UBI of $1k p/m with US Govt. COLA adjustments and instead of student loan forgiveness let people discharge student loans. That would mean if you're making a good living you need to pay and if you're making $12 p/h with $1k p/m student loan payments you get a clean slate. That way student loans will get much harder to get which would mean colleges would have to lower their prices. You'd see tution drop by >50% overnight. Good comment arkinyte13. Thanks for making it.

@nthperson

I agree with Professor Wolff that our society suffers from serious systemic contradictions, contradictions that have divided the peoples living here since the first people of European heritage stepped foot on the continent. On the surface there was a degree of cooperation, to be sure. However, consistent with the hierarchical structure of Old World societies, the source of conflict was based on control of the land. Europeans had dismantled the reciprocal relations under feudalism and divided the land into private estates controlled by an aristocracy that produced nothing themselves, exploited the population, and diverted their nation's resources to wars of territorial expansion. The Old World patterns of behavior became the norm in North America as more and more people arrived to compete with one another for control of land that was most fertile, nearest to waterways or lush with natural resources. The culture of conflict and violence intensified. The tribal peoples already here were also living in a state of near-constant conflict and violence with one another. Now, there were newcomers seeking to take from them the territory the occupied, fought over and controlled. The Europeans brought with them weapons that made the killing easier and these weapons found their way into the hands of tribal warriors. I could go on, but you know the rest of the story. Land hunger continues to plague whatever cooperative instincts exist in us. Landed interests are more powerful than ever. Their power is not just over resource lands but exists in the heart of our cities where a square foot of land costs more than an acre where population density is low and amenities few. All of the political economists from Adam Smith and A.R. Turgot, to Karl Marx, to Henry George understood that private property in land prevented the creation of cooperative societies. They all called for the public capture of the rent of land whether land was held by the community and leased to private users or deeds to land were issued and rent had to be collected as an annual tax. So many of our problems exist because we have failed to listen to their advice. Edward J. Dodson, Director School of Cooperative Individualism www.cooperative-individualism.org

If we're going to fix this, campaign finance reform penned into the Constitution would allow small dollar donation candidates to compete and gain office, enabling legislative changes affecting economic policies to favor worker owned companies, leading us into a more equitable system both economically and politically. My biggest issue with Communism is I don't like the idea of taking someone's stuff. I would much prefer a system that dictates an economic floor (free basic housing, medical, education) but allows for wealthy people. We don't need to tax the wealthy any more than we do, we can print without inflation (see 2008/9 plus 2020). We don't need to take money away from rich people, we just need the ability to supply the masses. The biggest lie being told to the masses is that we can't print money unless it's to help out big business.

4:49 The rich will never allow the system to change. There's going to have to be a major revolution. And what happened in DC to the capital building on January 6th 2021. That's going to look like a picnic in the park in comparison to what has to come next. Unless you can tell me a better, way I'm all ears. 1929 the stock market crashed in that caused a major recession that lasted more than 10 years. It was a hardship on most people. My grandmother was 14 and my grandfather was 24. Now we have another crash. The problem is from a spreadsheet prospective the country looks like it's doing okay. That's like having a beautifully wrapped box 🎁 with a big stinking turd as it's contents. If you only looked at the stock market you would think WoW.😲 I wish we could get rid of the stock market all together. It gives a false positive. And the people who aren't in the stock market know the damn difference! Which is as you have pointed out is about 85% of the country.

This is more complicated, but I agree with the close relation to Fascism without a dictator, and capitalism. The part that is not mentioned is human weakness. That's why its more complicated. Capitalism helps achieve wealth but the poverty ?? Poverty is human weakness when it works hand and hand with Capitalism. Lets use a small but far extreme example. Native indians. Before the industrial age or the European emigration came to this country. Was there Poverty among the native tribes? Did that even excist? Again this is an extreme. My point is We live in Capitalistic economy, but people have to control their own means. You cannot take the bait like a fish. But that is where human weakness lies. The problem with Fascism is more than half of the US american people don't really have a clue what that means becuase they have never lived in a country where the Govenment is ruled by and Individual that make all decisions and the people cannot disagree with the Government. Now Trump LOL is NADA!!! a poster on a wall with a talking mouth. Anything and everything he has ever done has always and will always be in his Favor, Period. He is the perfect Con. Everything he so called makes work the best. Anything that does not it, has nothing to do with him. So he knows how to take advantage of the ignorance and weakness of the people in the US.

Yes, totally agree. I am a Chinese living in Canada for 20 years. When I was in school, we learned the Political Economics which is based on Maxi's economics theory. Since I also learned western economics theory as well, I have to admit the Maxi's theory is really powerful and accurate. Capitalism is very greedy, they will drive many people into poverty, they intend to hold the power forever. Back in China, the political system works really hard to prevent the Capitalism from rising their power to control the political power of the country, and people benefit from it. In China the basic services like phone service, internet, TV, transportation are really cheap, just one tenth of the cost in Canada, so everybody can afford it. Rent is cheap, nobody lives on the street. Middle class people are really wealthy, they have much spare money to spend and save. I believe Chinese political system is the best in the world.

China is coming up to be the next world power, America is losing that role. Here’s an insight to why: In China, the Government has harnessed capitalism to increase the power and influence of the State. In the U.S. capitalism has controlled our Government to increase the wealth of the capitalists. To capitalists, wealth and its growth are the most important factors of all; The State and certainly the People are secondary, at best. But in a world of Nation-States, this is a sure road map to decline-the very decline of America that we are seeing now.

Capitalism is fine if everybody has share of the wealth created. Billionaires, corporations, AI, Robots, and CEOs cannot succeed without the people of the country. Robots and them should be treated as national resources, same as oil, land, infrastructures, even foreign workers.They all owe the people a living because the wealth of the country is created by her citizens, not just by millionaires. One cannot be a millionaire without people. People need a share of the wealth they help create. UBI funded by VAT and taxes is a way for everyone to share in the wealth of the country, then capitalism will thrive. And Billionaires will be heroes for paying a large amount of VAT. And protesters will not burn down businesses because of VAT and UBI. There will be a feeling of ownership of the country they created. We have a winner take all capitalistic system,richer gets richest, poor remains poor like they don’t count at all. This is not right. Without the citizens, billionaires cannot become billionaires. Try being a billionaire in a poor country, you cannot. People need a share of the wealth they help create. The time for UBI has come. If the rich hide their wealth, cheating on taxes, there’ll be a reckoning. But billionaires,including their robots and AI can be treated as as a national resources if they pay VAT and the citizens receive UBI.

I made an effort or am , may be planning on creating a collective movement. I am seeing people giving money to independent RU-vid contributors . to support the very capitalist system that many of them say. Oppresses us. Why not invest also in the solution to the problem. my question is after being stifled within a week for trying. Possibly by you tubers scared I may take some of there own monetary support. How without community support can I do it? Most of my social networking access has been what was stifled... So now the problem you tube is my only outlet. One of the capitalist enterprises my plan will possibly adversely affect.I can only assume it will not be long before it also turns against me. Ck. Out the videos on my channel and read my comments . tell me if it is worth the effort. Thanks Farmer John.

@@columlynch4229 - what you have is a social democracy. Capitalism with a strong welfare state. Socialism is a scare word because the business community went on a rampage after WW2 because they had to pay for the New Deal & social programs that protected people. They claimed communism was the biggest threat ever & spread everlasting propaganda that lasts until this day. Luckily, many have seen past the propaganda because they’re living within a disastrous economy firsthand & see how barbarism + mass death is profitable to capitalists.

So, the fundamental problems of capitalism have existent for slaves and their #ADOS. The moment we stepped off the slave ship, all the blame was placed on kidnapped victims as we built this country on free labor. Native Indians and slaves were not immigrants at that time. So now you saw fascist placed the blame on you. It would appear that even you are complicit in the conversation that you now make Mr. Wolff. Yes? Repent and seek redemption. So, capitalism produces both wealth and poverty? I suppose that is the case if you mean an investor class and a working class. Still, the working poor are hardly poor when compared to other systems. They are only poor in relation to the investor class. Any thoughtful person who has any experience with life in "undeveloped countries," is struck by the LACK of suffering among the impoverished. Consumer societies create needs where there are none. When everybody is in the same income bracket, the poor do not feel poor.

You need to travel more mate. Even if you are at the poverty line in the US, you are in the top 10% of the world. Also, 79% of millionaires in the US are first generation and inherited nothing - the system works in generating wealth for those who work hard and save hard. At least let's start with some common statistics. The US model and Capitalism should be criticized, but most other systems should just get tossed in the garbage.

@walden6272
@walden6272 3 года назад
Government is simply a tool. It all depends who is wielding it. Blaming Government is what those who control it wants you to blame so you don't blame them. Capitalists has full control of our Government. When their Corporations are on the verge of bankruptcies, they bail themselves out with public funds. They socialize their losses and privatize their gains. That is how they keep getting richer and why we have skyrocketing homelessness and unemployed. So think of Government like a gun, you can use a gun to hunt for food to feed your family or you can use a gun to threaten people and rob them. It's not the gun, it's the person who wields it that is the problem.
