The Battle of Britain had saved the United Kingdom from imminent invasion by the German Wehrmacht, however the war was far from over. To destroy Britain's economic capabilities to wage war, the German Kriegsmarine had to win the tonnage war in the North Atlantic. The German submarines - the U-Boote, were sent out to hunt. As the British Royal Navy returned to the convoy system to protect its merchant fleet, the Germans as well began organizing their submarines in groups to attack in unison. These hunter-killer teams, the Wolfpacks, would soon haunt the depths of the North Atlantic.

As a destroyer sailor, this song gets me pumped when I hear "general quarters, general quarters, all hands man your battle stations." Though I continue it as we did on ship, "precede up and forward on starboard, down and aft on port, report material readiness conditions to damage control central," or something to that effect, it wasn't my job but hearing it constantly most of it stuck. I could picture us going nuts in this situation, seeing ships explode in the night, the radio screaming with cries for help. The water on fire and any minute a torpedo could get us too. I do not envy the sailors of yesteryear, I respect them, I honor them for their sacrifices and thank them for the lessons learned. Fair winds and following seas.

The Poles cracked Engima mathematically in the late 30s then smuggled it to the Brits, who proceeded to industrialize the process at Bletchly Park, which could crack the 3-rotor Enigma of the Wehrmacht but not the 4-rotor Kriegsmarine Enigma (who also employed better OpSec and InfoSec making it even harder to break). Then they finally caught a U-boat and got the codebooks before they could be destroyed making it "easier" to break the naval Enigma.

Centrimentric radar, Corvettes and Squid mortars and the expansion of the "escort navy", the RCN, also played a big part in the defeat of the U-Boat. Sadly the Battle of The Atlantic, the longest theater in the war, is often overlooked or forgotten. I'm glad it's at least remembered in this song.

Its also remembered at the Canadian War Museum in Ottawa. The hedgehog anti-submarine rocket system also played a large roll in anti-submarine actions taken during the Battle of the Atlantic. Sabaton should do a song about the HMCS Haida, comissioned and built in the UK and bought by Canada, this Tribal Class destroyer (one of four purchased) quickly became the most decorated warship in Canadian military history. Convoy defense on the brutal Murmansk run, traversing the Arctic Circle, passing through the Panama Canal and becoming a member of the elite Trainbusters Club in the Pacific. She now serves as a National Historic Site and floating museum in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada and is featured in Wargaming's World of Warships.

For having 2 uncles on subs in the wolf pack, it's good to hear a band have a song about the wolf pack. I only herd small stories from them before they passed away but they only survived as their captains disobeyed the orders to scuttle their subs, their reason for not doing it was 'Deutschland has lost to many sons to this war, no more will be be sent to a senseless death'. From what they told me, it wasn't until the last 70's early 80's that they weren't called deserters and they got their military benifets.

All war scenarios are scary on their own way, but the thought of serving in a merchant ship during WWII below decks at night, completely vulnerable to a torpedo attack, and being surrounded by the haunting screams of twisting metal while the ship is being swallowed by the sea,... is probably one of the most terrifying things I can imagine. Even worse knowing that even if you would survive that, you had to try cope with the cold Atlantic, burning oil, and not having any guarantee that a ship would return for you. Must be such a desperate feeling to see your hopes of salvation just steam away to save themselves from further attacks. Respect to all that volunteered and served in the Merchant Navy during those dark years, they were braver than most of us will ever be.

Convoys also went to Murmansk, north Russia. As the nazi's had cut of the railwayline, and there was no other way of sending equpment to the north-front. During ww2 americans sent weapons and machines to Russia. Tirpitz where sent to Alta, Norway, to cut of the convoys.

I'm doing a project for school for a regional competition on the Battle of the Atlantic, and I'm planning on doing a main history brief, then booklets on ships/types of ships that had a major impact or are well known from the Battle of the Atlantic, which is going to include the U-Boats, the Bismarck, the Prinz Eugen, the HMS Hood, and the Ark Royal. The competition is in about the first week of April, and I'm starting it today. This will be fun :,)

Hey thanks for covering this song only just came across it! My grandfather was a code breaker at Bletchley park and was at hut 7 I think? Could be wrong on that one but he spoke a lot about enigma (after official secrets act expired) and it’s fascinating! His code breaking helped sink the battleship/cruiser Scharnhorst, he would have loved the song and the show for sure! Thanks a lot for covering this one :) take care you guys

Please do a song about wjotek! He got promoted because during battle he mimicked the soldiers carrying artillery shells for the guns so during battle he resupplied artillery positions. They made patches with him carrying shells. He smoked and drank. He wrestled with soldiers he even survived the war and lived the rest of his life in a zoo. Soldiers that served with him would come by and he sit down and expect to be given a cigarette lol. Honestly a badass story. You could do one on the free polish navy as well. A polish destroyer signaled to the Bismark "I am a Pole" before charging it. They showed up at some many battles and were so aggressive that British admiralty thought they had twice as many ships than they did.

I wish Sabaton would cover the Admiral Graf Spee, which hunted merchant ships, but the captain was a Nazi-humanitarian who was careful to serve his nation while minimizing human casualties in the process. At substantial tactical risk, the Spee was known to report its own position to enemy coast guards requesting that the coast guard send its vessels to pick up some sailors in lifeboats from the vessels it boarded, cleared and then sank. In the end, when cornered by the British cruiser Exeter and 2 other destroyers, the Graf Spee battled, then retreated. Had the Spee made up its mind to either sink those 3 ships or go down trying, the Spee would have survived, but the Spee failed to recognize the fact that it was winning its final battle, which lead to the Spee's retreat and subsequent scuttling.

Hey guys ,I can't stop listening to Fields of Verdum song, and I just an idea came up to my mind some days ago, and is that why not adding the explosions, shots sounds from the original video to the song itself ,so all those amazing sounds efects (explosions&shots) are joined permanently with the song and also using those effects at the live shows in order to perform even a greater show!!! Man those explosions effets and shots from the original video would fit awesomely EPIC if are joined/added permanently with the song!!!

My Dad flew subkillers for the Canadian Navy. Off of HMCS Bonaventure. Up until the mid 60s, the allies STILL kept up the watch against armed enemy subs. One of my earliest memories is watching Bonnie "swallow" a helicopter that had landed on her deck. We lived in Halifax, of course. I enjoy a nice G&T myself. For medicinal purposes.

You guys should write a song about the biggest naval convoy battle in ww2. ( convoys HX 229 and SC 122) The double battle had involved 90 merchant ships and 16 escort ships (though not all were present at the same time). 22 merchant ships were sunk (13 from HX 229 and 9 from SC 122), a loss of 146,000 tons. More than 300 merchant seaman died. In total, 38 U-boats had taken part (though throughout the battle not all had been in contact). One U-boat had been lost with all hands. This was the largest convoy battle of the Atlantic campaign. A Royal Navy report later concluded "It appeared possible that we should not be able to regard convoy as an effective system of defence

''One of the enduring images of the second world war is that of the German u-boats, who would hunt in wolf packs.' And now I can't escape the image of a u-boat in the middle of a forest surrounded by wolves. On the conning tower stands an exasperated German, his head in his hands. 'Mein gott, Hans.' Both my grandfather and my great uncle were sunk by u-boats. The former as a CPO in the Royal Navy. He had to swim underwater as the surface was aflame, but he made it out. The latter as an Engineer Officer in the Merchant Navy, and not so lucky. He went down with the Lady Glanely on the 02/12/1940. A Welshman serving on a Welsh ship. Briefly mentioned in the video is the Llanover, another Welsh merchant vessel. There's a cracking book that covers the stories of many Welsh merchants that were lost to the Kriegsmarine, though it makes for depressing reading. They Sank the Red Dragon by Bernard Edwards, for any interested.

Still by far my favourite song from Primo Victoria. While the title track and Panzer Battalion are always brought up as the classics, I think this song's music is so dramatic and (pardon the word) epic, while telling a story much less well known than most others on the album. And the buildup to the final chorus is just... so good!
