Don’t get me wrong a hell of a lot of people died but the radiation dissipated quite quickly and most of the sickness brought on by radiation would come later in life. If you survived the initial blast the odds you’d be alive 10 years later were fairly good considering what happened

@@Zippity181mainly because it was an air detonation. The radiation mostly dissipated into the atmosphere instead of lying dormant in the ground, hence why Nagasaki and Hiroshima are habitable today and places like Chernobyl aren’t.

It's unclear if they actually filmed there in the brief sequence set in the modern day, as it was apparently very difficult to get filming permits in Japan. The WW2 version of the location was filmed in Sydney, along with most of the film.

First thing I thought when I saw the movie

Ignoring that he would have been blinded and covered in 3rd degree burns the millisecond it went off, I think he'd be safe from radiation sitting in that well. Gamma rays are stopped by concrete and dirt, and from what I've read fallout was minimal in both Japanese cities because the bombs were detonated half a kilometer above (fireball didn't touch the Earth). He may have suffered some symptoms of radiation poisoning like vomiting and headache, maybe even developed cancer years later, but he'd survive.
