The fact that the fish turn such gorgeous colors after proper care is both amazing and heartbreaking. It shows how much they were suffering.

@@J_Lynn there are some specific white ones (called “pearl” “opal” “cellophane”) bred to be as white as possible and with a shimmery look in their tails. I was thinking the same thing. Every creature of every kind suffers in their own way and while we cannot at times do anything to alleviate another's suffering, at least we can make a vow to not ADD to it with our judgments and snide comments, or just numbed out indifference. And yet that seems to be the modernized blood sport of the day. Thank God this woman is modeling human decency and recognizing the suffering that she can attend to. No matter how many good and kind years you were able to give beforehand. You just think this way, because it's normal for you to see specific animals only as a ressource. Deep down your heart you know. No matter if it's a cow, a pig, a dog or a cat. All feel joy, pain, are afraid, have to eat and sleep, have babies, which they protect and take care of. They can't communicate in the way we do, aren't able to solve complicated problems, but in the end they are all living beings on this planet and don't want to harm you in any way, even after centuries of enslavement and mass murder (over 70 billion animals per year). Stop being mad over people taking in these animals when they would of just died a miserable death. You can't undomesticate these fish, it's not how it works. The fish are bright and clearly healthy, if they weren't they'd be dull. Common sense, really. You people Wana spout about animal care, yet your solutions will literally kill them.

Also, the contents in their water has to be balanced for them to survive. If you don't have a cleaner or purifier, you gotta put your beta fish in a very small aquarium for starters. Putting them in a cup is natural for them. At least you feed them at least 8-5 pellets a day, just dont try to over feed them or else they'll die obviously.

They absolutely are sentient. I once rescued a wild crayfish that someone was going to use as bate. I asked if I could have the crayfish and was told yes. I brought him home, set up an aquarium for him, and named him Sebastian. I wanted to enrich Sebastian's life, so I got him a school of small fish for company. Oops. All but one of the fish disappeared. That one fish seemed upset without other fish friends and started trying to school with Sebastian. He would swim right through Sebastian's open claws. I thought for sure the little fish was a gonner. And I couldn't afford a second aquarium, so I let them be. But Sebastian seemed to want to keep the one fish as a friend. Sebastian would let that little fish swim all around him and never made a move to harm him. So we named the fish, Fish Buddy. Sebastian was already fully mature when I rescued him. So he lived for a few years and then passed in his sleep. When Sebastian passed Fish Buddy swam around and around in the last spot that Sebastian had been. He was very clearly upset that his friend was gone. I added a new school of small fish to the tank to keep fish buddy company after Sebastian passed. But Fish buddy never schooled with another fish again. He wasn't mean to the new fish, though he continued to guard the place where Sebastian had passed. And he did swim around the rest of the tank again eventually. But he never schooled again. Fish buddy did end up having babies (Apparently he was a she.) And lived a good life eventually dying of old age, too. But Fish buddy never seemed to fully get over the loss of his friend. Yes, they absolutely do have feelings. I have amazing stories of obvious sentience shown by Sebastian, too. If anyone someday wants to hear. These guys were the first in my journey to discover that not just some, but all the animals are sentient. And we can see if we take the time to look and learn.

@@troxycat Okay. Sebastian's story really is pretty cool, too. And I completely agree about chickens being intelligent, though that is recent for me, too. I've always known that cats were sentient. But Sebastian and Fish Buddy were really the beginning for me to see that they all are. So, when I first adopted Sebastian I was the only one caring for him. My roommate was the one who had planned to use him as bate and hadn't been very nice to the poor crayfish. The roommate was kind of indifferent toward my new pet to start. But I was fascinated by Sebastian. I read that fully grown crayfish eat things like blood worms and meat. I didn't want to just dump a bunch of meat based food in his tank and risk it not getting eaten and polluting the water. So I would use wooden chopsticks and hold the food right in front of Sebastian's nose. At first Sebastian was aggressive toward anything coming near his tank. Or especially coming into his tank. He would stand up on his hind legs and flash his bright red underbelly and the red underside of his giant claws. He even made his red color more vibrant when doing this gesture. And he would lunge forward with his open claws, flashing them with aggression. He was very clearly saying, "BACK OFF!" But it didn't take long at all for Sebastian to realize that I meant him no harm. And that I was the bringer of food. Very quickly he stopped gesturing aggressively toward me. Instead, he would eagerly move toward the chopstick to eat his delicious food with no aggression at all. And soon he started reaching up in a very different way. Even just seeing me outside his tank. He was still putting his claws up and still stood on his hind legs, but he no longer flashed his red color. He let his underbelly and claws remain a soft orange. He didn't lunge or flash his claws. And he held his claws in a very different position. Instead of telling me to back off, he was reaching up as if he was begging. Like a little kid reaching up to be picked up. Sebastian was begging for food. He did this anytime he saw me nearby now. The really amazing thing was that he still flashed and lunged at my roommate. It looked like Sebastian was flipping him off every time the roommate walked by. Sebastian could tell the difference between my roommate and I. And Sebastian clearly had an opinion about each of us. By this point my roommate was fascinated and wanted to start feeding Sebastian with the chopsticks too. At first Sebastian wasn't open to the idea, but once he smelled the bloodworms he came around. Within about a day or two Sebastian was no longer flipping my roommate off. And soon he was begging my roommate with his arms up like a little kid, too. Eventually the roommate had a friend come over to see our cool crayfish. The new person stuck her face in front of Sebastian's tank to get a good look. And Sebastian was having none of that. He immediately lunged and flashed his red color and flipped the intruder off. He clearly didn't like this new person at all. And yet my roommate and I could get as close to the tank as we wanted with no such aggression at all. I showed the visitor how nice Sebastian could be by feeding him myself. As soon as I came near to feed him, he begged me with arms gently raised and happily ate his food. But he never did accept the visitor, no matter how many times she visited. He just really hated her. So, not only are crayfish aware of what goes on in their tank, they are aware of what is outside of their tank, too. They do see humans. They can tell the difference between different humans. They can recognize and remember at least three different people. And they can have very strong opinions about each different person. And very consistently, too. Once Sebastian befriended me, he never showed aggression toward me again. The same with my roommate once they were friends. And he never begged my roommate's friend. Not once, ever. Sebastian remembered who was who forever. Sebastian also seemed to have the ability to forgive. If he's able to recognize and remember different people, then he probably remembered the unkind treatment of my roommate the day Sebastian was initially caught. And yet once shown kindness by my roommate, Sebastian apparently chose to forgive. All of this from a creature with an exoskeleton and 6 legs. I have honestly never looked at creatures of any type the same again. Since then I have raised crickets and katydids. And I have seen amazing things about them, too. I would be happy to tell about them if anyone is interested, too.

I had a pet fish around 10 years ago and I still love him very much. His name was Bolt because whenever I made him follow my finger and zipped it across the tank he'd 'bolt' to my finger super fast! He was very smart, we played games like hide and seek, follow the finger, loop game, and more too. He also remembered feeding time and place and whenever I got his food in my hand he'd swim to the place I'd feed him normally. He woke up at 6am or earlier, and he slept on a special jade rock that was big enough for him to rest on, and if I put my fist to the tank he'd 'fistbump' it by tapping the glass with his face lol. The same with kisses and high fives. He didn't like other fish being in the tank and would bully them a lot so we had to move him to his own tank, and before he died he was really weak and wouldn't move from his jade rock... Just a little before he died, he swam up to me slowly and gave me one last kiss, and then he died on his rock. I cried for months and I still get teary as I remember it. He lived for 4 years and I feel like if I had known more about taking care of him he wouldn't have gone so soon.

One of the deepest regrets in my life is not caring properly for my pet fish as a child. It wasn't necessarily anyone's fault, but I inadvertently caused them pain and suffering simply because I was a kid and didn't know what to do, or really the responsibility I was taking on. Now I'm an adult and I'm thinking about getting my own aquarium for some rescue betta, and I've sworn that the neglect and suffering will not occur again. I had a goldfish that I used to play "catch your tail" with: he would swim to the end of the tank and I would place my hand against the glass and say "I'm gonna catch your tail!" and he would excitedly swim away then come back. Well, one year I had to be in hospital for emergency surgery and was there for almost two weeks. When I finally arrived home my fish swam frantically back and forth in the tank, poked his mouth above water to take food from my hand, then flicked water out of the tank as he dove back down to the bottom. My husband told me the fish was so quiet while I was away 😥, he would talk to my fish but it didn't react the same as when I was there ☹. Fish aren't boring at all, and are quite sensitive. I decorated the outside edge of his tank with Christmas garland - he LOVED that!! Awww, miss my "Big Gish" goldfish.

For a month I kept her in this tiny aquarium since its the only thing I had. I'd love to buy a new that's suitable for her to live comfortably but I don't have the money to be able to do that. Yesterday I moved her in a crate that I layered with tarpaulin and she's doing fine right now but I hope I can move her to a much more comfortable tank for her. I love her so much and I want only the best for her. Whenever I come and look at her, she sometimes comes up and says hello and my parents love her, she is adorable.

"a lot of people think fish are boring & completely out of feeling" Yes this is painfully true, the number of times people have been surprised over my goldfish and koi swimming onto your hand to be fed, or swimming towards you to say hi is too dang high. It makes me both angry & sad when people see fish as "pretty moving furniture" only. They're individuals with different personalities and are way smarter than some think. I've had fish for around 12 years and they prove to me time & time again just how wonderful they are, there should be more education about fish and how they're handled, a tiny bowl is no life, it's a prison and these are living feeling creatures :(

I think that sometimes it takes time to learn how special each creature is. The older I have become, the easier it is for me to simply OBSERVE the animals I have collected. Watching them eat, explore, interact with me.. it all leads to a connection and deeper appreciation for how special they are. I am truly distressed when my goldfish and Bettas are not well. @@pamelasharkey7653 Bettas, or siamese fighting fish, are very territorial, so males must be kept separate from others of their species. Sometimes a group of females can be kept together, but it depends on their personalities. Unless it is particularly aggressive you can usually keep one betta in a community tank with other peaceful species. That is one way responsible pet stores can house their bettas. Unfortunately buying one of the cup bettas just perpetuates the cycle and that store will continue to stock their bettas in tiny cups as long as people keep buying them. That being said, you'd be hard pressed to find someone in the hobby that hasn't bought a cup betta, it's hard to leave them there when you know their odds for a happy life are so dismal.

He would swim into my hand for "pets", would swim up and down the tank excitedly when he saw me and he'd even splash me in the mornings (his tank was right next to my bed) & he'd pop up this little ball I had as a game. Ahhh I love this woman! I also rescue fish, so it's wonderful to see someone else out there loves them as much as I do. ♥️ My Mom went to a firehouse hall after there was a wedding the night before. Their center pieces were Bettas in bowls. There was one little guy they left behind and the bartender didn't know what to do with it. My Mom called to ask if I would take him in. I had a 5 gallon set up faster than I could say YES! I also took in a Betta and 2 fancy goldfish (at separate times) from a client of my Mom's. They just didn't want to care for them anymore. Another client had a group of tropical fish that they left in horrible conditions when they were divorcing, and they allowed me to take them. Unfortunately, they all passed away from ich, even though I treated them for it. I currently have 4 rescue goldfish I found through my neighborhood website. The one was in a dirty 5 gallon tank in the basement, and the other 3 we're part of a group of 5 crammed in a 10 gallon tank. I've had the first for 4 years and the other 3 for for a year. It all started with 2 goldfish left behind in a small pond at the house I rented in 2004. I brought them inside so I didn't have to worry about the winter weather and water freezing. Picasso only made it 6 months, but Monet lived with me for another 9 years. I also had a fish, Pumpkin, who had buoyancy problems. She would float upside down at the top of the tank. I would feed her peas to reduce any bloating and that would help. I miss her. Please consider giving a home to a fish in need! ♥️

Well I was one of those rare souls that always loved old people and animals and I was genuinely touched when I'd go to say hi to these scruffy looking birds. I found it soothing that the shopkeeper found a place in his heart to adopt these birds at their life's end.

@@Vaquita. I killed a caterpillar once when I was 7. I’m 51 and I still think about it. No matter how small in size, our pets take a big piece of our heart with them when they go. Someday I’ll die of a heart attack after having lost so much of mine to the pets I’ve had through the years.

@@ds_the_rn Your a very kind person, i once squished a tiny bug when i was 5 or something, it makes me quite upset thinking about it and try to capture flies and let them go, when i see mosquito torcher videos and people saying “they cant feel pain” to me cause theyre small and say they kill millions a year, well we kill billions a year.. So thank you for sharing your sympathy. (By capturing flies i mean inside the house, then releasing them outside.)

My son won a carnival fish when he was young. Although I did not anticipate him coming home with one I decided to buy a tank and setup. When to my surprise it lived beyond a month or so we bought some companions. That carnival fish loved for me to pet it and it outlived the others!
