From my very superficial and shallow understanding of bdsm, I understood it as an assuming of control (Dom) and a giving up your control (Sub). The S&M parts could be interchangeable between the Dom and sub, because you can have a masochistic Dom and a sadistic sub but still work within their respective roles.
