So when it appears that he is reaching out to them all the rational thoughts goes out the door and the fantasy idea of him takes over. Basically the confuse fantasy and reality. I think what they mean by this is that it can happen to "anybody" regardless of gender, age, socio-economic status, race, religion, sexual orientation or even marital status. It doesn't take into account a person's character traits such as being lonely, easily guilt-tripped, having a savior complex or being just plain gullible.

I also used to know a lady who was 10 years into the Iraqi Dinar scam (that's a wild one, if you get a chance look it up). I've stopped a couple people from scams, one was a romance scam (typical army doctor scammer) and one was a loan scam. But they may have gotten back in at some point. It's hard to see people you care about get scammed like this, I hope one day your friend wakes up from her fantasy and is able to repair her relationship with her kids. That's the saddest part, that kids are involved and have lost their mom to a Jeremy Renner scammer.
