This phrase literally came to life… “If you can’t stand the heat, get out of the kitchen” 😂😂

The fact that this woman has a mechanical engineering degree should make you seriously question Americas education system.

I get it. When you panic, you don’t think of the simplest things. Glad she’s ok.

When I lived in an apartment building, sometimes I would lie awake at night and think about some blockhead in the building doing something like this.

I really love that she owned it and used it as a teachable moment for herself and her audience. I hadn't gotten a refresher on this in decades, so she ended up helping me too. That tells you all you need to know about what kind of person she is. And I'm so glad nobody got hurt.

She's a living example of learning only the theory and not practicing it. The moment you panicked from doing the real thing all those theories in your head would magically disappear into thin air

Im a firefighter, when you see the oil smoking that definitely means you're cooking it wrong, never let the oil smoke or it'll reach it's flashpoint (the point where it catches fire) and erupt into flames

Never EVER put water on a grease fire. People have died doing this. Suffocate the fire like she said but do always make sure you have an extinguisher in your home. It can save your life one day.

A damp tea towel can do the same job. The pan could also have been shoved in the oven with the door tightly shut and the fire would run out of oxygen very quickly.

So it started to smoke and she not only left the food in there too long but she also turned around at the camera smiling and waving her hand?

Mistake #1: Not having a fire extinguisher. That should be an essential supply for any home. Mistake #2: Not turning off the heat before the smoke became a full on flame. That probably would've prevented it from becoming a full on flame in the first place. Mistake #3, which she demonstrates at the end: Not immediately covering the fire with a lid.

It shoes character that she was humble enough admit her ignorance and then share what she learned with everyone.

Through an act of heroism she saved her phone and her nails.

One time a fire started in our kitchen on this mini electric grill… the fire started to get bigger and bigger. I was hesitant to throw water on it because the device was plugged in, all of us were just standing there not knowing what to do. My dad… outta nowhere, wakes up. Throws his blanket on top, fire was out instantly. He saved the house that day. I miss my pops.

The only upside to this is it makes a much better PSA than anything the government makes for the fire department to show students. When you panic, “monkey brain” is a real thing but even if water was the first mistake with oil and you didn’t think of the lid, I feel like even in a panic you could’ve tossed it in the oven and closed the door or at least kept it off the hot spot she was cooking on

She literally did everything you’re not supposed to do- In a moment of panic, of course. I’m glad she was okay because it could’ve turned out much worse.

I was at home sleeping (working nights) when this happened to my roommates when she was trying out her new wok. Her screaming must have woke me up because I got up to get a glass of water and passed her in the hallway as she ran to get the landlord and a fire extinguisher. I walked, half asleep, into the kitchen with most of the stove on fire. I calmly got a box of baking soda out of the fridge and shook it all over the fire and the stove putting it out. Then I turned off the stove top, poured a glass of water, and passed our landlord, fire extinguisher in hand in the hallway as I went back to bed mumbling something about "I took care of it". I woke up to a decently packed lunch that evening, before I left for work. Luckily there was little to no damage to the stove. Our landlord later explained to her that I was a former volunteer firefighter and it would probably be quicker to get me next time, if it happens again.🤷‍♂️

People should know this that when there’s a fire you don’t put it underwater you need to get a wet cloth and that will work

Is cooking fire safety even taut in school anymore. Whith people not being able to afford eating out this increases the posibility of more home fires due to lack of cooking skills, fire safety and proper use of food cutting tools leading to personal skin damage.

Mechanical engineering does not equate to being trained to fight and respond to indoor fires. I am a mechanical engineer... and also have 20+ years of experience shipboard fire fighting and shipboard damage control (navy). Panic response is the WORST, save yourself, save a neighbor, and at minimum go attend a portable fire extinguisher course - sometimes the local fire dept will put this on at no cost and workplaces usually do this if the local OSHA requires it.

I'm glad she's okay. We get it man, when you panic all that training goes out the window sometimes. Good that she refreshed her training and shared it too! By training I mean she has done this before but obviously not in a long time. Don't be quick to judge people!

Keep baking soda within arm’s reach of your stove! If you don’t have a lid to suffocate the flames, baking soda works phenomenally.

This is a good lesson in 2 ways. Lesson 1: What not to do when handling a grease fire Lesson 2: In panic mode, even expert knowledge goes out the window. That's why you have to calm down when dealing with events like these. She got lucky and I'm happy it turned out that way.

I’m a firefighter in Canada.. we all laugh because she did this on the internet.. but she isn’t nearly alone.. we get calls like this one all the time.. Even smart, well meaning people can panic and make a bad situation even worse. I’m glad she wasn’t hurt (or evicted).

Well to be honest the video title starts with 'Woman' i wasnt expecting anything less.

Panic can be one helluva drug. Burning whatever it was she was cooking 10 ways to Sunday before it ever even caught on fire is the more...intellectually disturbing part. That means she clearly wasn't watching her cooking nearly closely enough, which is probably what allowed it to get to the point of catching on fire in the first place.

I learned to "put a lid on it" many many years ago, when I worked in fast food. The problem is sometimes we go into panic mode, and the knowledge we have goes out the window.

Either she isn't smart enough to move the pan or turn the heat down when the smoke is so strong that 1. She can't breathe 2. it sets off the smoke detector 3. It starts a fire. OR... It was intentional for more twitch views (sounded like she yelled "Help! I don't know what to do!" more at the microphone instead of out the door/down the hallway?). To me, she seemed more exited and happy to be having the interview (that she looked VERY prepared for) than being humbly thankful she didn't burn her neighbors to death. Your call.

The fact this women is a mechanical engineer is seriously concerning. Considering a lot of the mechanical equipment we use contains oil and has chances of fire surely she should have been taught the basics

Never EVER put eater on grease. I learned this the hard way too and flames EXPLODED onto the ceiling all the way from the pan. Literally the entire kitchen ceiling was rolling in flames. Always cover it with the lid, use and extinguisher, flour or baking soda..things like that

tbf, she handled the aftermath very very well by admitting her mistake, learning and educating, that is definitely not the norm today

I remember tuning into the fire scanner when my building alarm was going off. Heard the responding firefighter say it was a a tiny kitchen fire with smoke caused by "culinary incompetence"

My first thought was for her to put it in the oven and close the door; make sure the oven is off. The burner in the bottom of my mawmaw's oven once caught fire while I was cooking; the fire went out on its own within a minute. A lid is a much better idea; but if you cannot find the lid, I think putting it into an unheated oven probably would work too.

Glad she's ok. I'm sure it's a lesson learned that she won't soon forget. Also great dad to send her those gifts. Stay safe.

😂This happened to my neighbor just yesterday!! It's 8pm and she's banging on my door! I grab my extinguisher and start spraying only to realize it was a grease fire. I ran in my house and grabbed some salt and baking soda to cover it. Easy peasy. I wound up frying the chicken for her when the smoke cleared.

Burning oil can be extinguished: cover with a lid (this is easier and faster than any other method), sprinkle with baking soda, sprinkle with washing powder, cover with a towel. You cannot extinguish with water!!!

Baking Soda - Sodium bicarbonate can be used to extinguish small grease or electrical fires by being thrown over the fire, as heating of sodium bicarbonate releases carbon dioxide.

A fire extinguisher cost like $20. And they're real easy to use. Pull the pin. Count to three, and throw it.

im loosing my braincells whenever i see somebody who sets their house on fire even though the fix was probably few feets away (lid which is enough to suffocate fire)

I have a friend who's a volunteer fire fighter. He has a fire extinguisher in EVERY room of his house. After hearing some of his stories of how quick little minor fires got out of hand and took out a whole house so do I.

Grease/oil fire prevention was engraved in my head growing up from my parents as they had a friend that lost everything over a kitchen fire like that.

Look closely, the eye she had the oil on was cranked to HIGH. You should never ever set your stove to high for anything other than boiling water.

What I found odd was she carelessly ignored the smoking pan, turned away from it and just laughed.

This is what I was concerned to myself and for others. We have some knowledge on how to tackle dangerous situations. But if it does happen to us, we might go in panic mode where all of that knowledge just went away.

Covering it is only half of what you do. You remove it from the heat source and leave it to cool because as soon as you uncover it, it will burst into flames again if it's hot.

This is why you make a point of having a lid ready every time you cook with something that can catch fire. Not because you will ever need it, statistically, but to remind you of how to correctly put out an oil fire so it is fresh in your mind if it happens.
