Joshua Lewis, Michael Miller, and Guest Jeff Jenkins (myanchorchurch.com) will be tackling the complementarian-egalitarian conversation this Monday. We will be answering questions like. Can women be senior pastors? Can Women preach on during the gathering of a churchwide assembly? What should we think about women Pastors? Can women serve in the ministry?
There is a plurality of opinions on this topic and we hope to do a good job of representing them all. tune in this Monday at 8:30PM CST to watch the program. If you would like to call in and ask your questions our phone lines will be open to take your calls. In the meantime feel free to ask your questions in the comments.
Complementarian Definition:
Men and women are absolutely equal in essence, dignity, and value and are complementary by divine design. Gender does not merely represent a social construct but, instead, represents a reality present in every human from birth. Men and women are not interchangeable. From the opening pages of Scripture, we find that God, in His wisdom and providence, created two complementary sexes for our good and His glory. In light of His good created order, and the fact that men and women both share in divine image bearing, God intends for men and women to have different yet complementary roles and responsibilities in the church and home.
These role distinctions do not arise from cultural definitions of masculinity and femininity but are an integral part of God’s plan for humanity, as revealed in Scripture. We should recognize them as God’s grace to men and women, protecting, preserving and practicing them for His glory, our joy and for the sake of human flourishing.
thevillagechurch.net/Content/...
Egalitarianism Definition:
Is the theological view that not only are all people equal before God in their personhood, but there are no gender-based limitations of what functions or roles each can fulfill in the home, the church, and the society. It is sometimes referred to as biblical equality. Egalitarians understand the Bible as teaching the fundamental equality of women and men of all racial and ethnic groups, all economic classes, and all age groups, based on the teachings and example of Jesus Christ. It should not be confused with secular political, economic, social egalitarianism.

I grew up in a conservative church. As a girl, I knew I had a "calling" but it was clear that my only outlet for that was to marry a pastor or a missionary. I committed to submit to that and to be content with my "role". I have happily taught children and women all of my life. (I am 62.) God opened doors for me to travel the world to preach and to teach Basic Bible Doctrine. But in my own church (which supports me financially and in prayer) I have never been offered the microphone. I was ordained in another church. I recently returned from Mexico where I spoke to over 800 people - 300 were pastors - and my coordinator told me, "When we first got saved, I knew my beloved pastor was wrong when he said women couldn't preach because when my wife and went out on the streets and we both preached. My five-foot wife would preach The Gospel and six--foot men would fall on their knees to receive Christ as their Savior." The Church is losing so much by cutting off over 50% of the congregation. I have studied the Scriptures regarding me "being quiet" and I am willing to do so. But I have been given freedom from several men to preach and to minister and it is pretty clear that God honors women and women in ministry. (Mary was in the mens' room when Martha got so mad.)

This might be helpful for you. This is what Ive learned in my own study…The problem is that people read one bible verse and then dont read the surrounding verses which actually illuminate how to understand the verse. For example when Paul says “women are to be silent at church” in 1 Corinthians 14 people just take those words and run with them. If they just read a few verses earlier they would see Paul instructing BOTH MEN AND WOMEN how to orderly use their gifts in the church congregation… he lists those gifts as word of instruction (teaching), prophesying, speaking in tongues/interpreting tongues, and spiritual songs. He is telling men and women here to be orderly in how they go about preaching/prophesying, teaching, tongues and singing before the whole church. This was in the entire congregation of men and women. Earlier in chapter 11 he gives instruction for how men and women are to pray or prophecy in the congregation. In chapter 12 he talks about how every single person is a vital part of the body and how everyone should eagerly desire the greater gifts (prophecy and teaching are the top 2). Everyone, both men and women are told to eagerly desire these gifts. Then chapter 14 Paul instructs the church in how to go about using those gifts in an orderly fashion during the worship service. Paul also instructs at different points when people are to be silent. If someone is prophesying and another stands up to speak the first should sit down and be silent. Then women are told to be quiet and if they want to ask questions to ask their husbands at home. Most people believe this has to do with women disturbing the service by asking questions and thats why they are told to be quiet. It would not make sense for Paul to spend 2 entire chapters instructing men and women how to speak and use their gifts before the entire church body and then totally silence women. This silence is in direct correlation of asking questions during the service. It must have been something very disruptive because it is defined as disgraceful. Many people attribute the disgrace to women using their gifts publically in the church but that is wrong, because Paul just spent 2 chapters telling both men and women to eagerly seek the greater gifts.. why? To build up the ENTIRE congregation…. How??? Orderly taking turns using their gifts in the congregation. This simple, straightforward teaching of Paul on church order has been so flipped on its head and twisted.. basically the only part of these beautiful chapters that is actually kept by most churches is the part of “women be silent” which is totally taken out of context and actually used to do the opposite of what Paul is teaching. It is truly shocking how much is right in front of our faces but we have been trained to only see certain things.

I grew up in a very conservative Christian home. I literally visited my family a few days ago and had a conversation with my older brother where he told me he did not think women should vote because they vote with their emotions. I remember four years ago being in a Bible study, where I was the only woman present; the discussion indicated there was a lack of understanding of Jesus satisfying the wrath of God on our behalf, or propitiation. They did not like the Psalm Jesus quoted on the cross asking why God had forsaken Him and were attempting to explain it away. I remember feeling a burning in my chest to explain this foundational topic, and ironically, emphasizing to these men that it does not matter how we FEEL about what scripture says, but rather what it is trying to teach us. But instead of speaking up, I had an inner conflict on whether I was supposed to say anything, because I was a woman. Four years later, I now believe that teaching women to be silent is a clever Satanic twisting of scripture to keep the Gospel from being shared by 50% of the Church. Not to mention the lack of iron sharpening iron amongst Christians themselves.

So far I love this conversation. The one thing I would add is that there are a few bad comparisons. First, if women make up 10% of pastors but happen to have a higher degree of receiving seminary education that doesn’t mean they put more priority on getting a seminary education. Overall there are still vastly more male pastors with degrees. It may be that men have more opportunities without a degree than women do and find it possible to skip that step but do a fine job self educating. Also, there was a notion expressed that women tend to be more careful with the word of God than men. I find that idea just as repulsive as saying women are deceived more easily than men. This sort of generalizing to help promote women over men to some how right a wrong is silly and hurtful within the body of Christ. I’m open to changing my views, which are loosely held but based as best as I can see on scripture when it comes to women’s roles in the church. All that said, it is very different to me than the discussion about how we should promote women up through the church simply because they are women. That idea is repugnant to scripture. If we are, as an entire church body, going to move in a direction that breaks down barriers for women in ministry, we still need to respect the fact that we are all equal before God and promoting anyone over another due to their sex is wrong.

A couple of questions: 1) do you consider the woman at the well preaching to her town? What role does she fit in your paradigm? 2) I find it odd that you all reference slippery slope as even something that should be entertained. Do you not consider that a fallacy?

This is a hard subject to get right for people in this day. Because Pauls statements are so universal one has to come outside of church politics and understand economics and social science, basically how a nation works to really figure this one out. This is easy for a simple people, but for a complex people like Americans with so many layers and checks and balances and divisions and councils and economic differences and such a diverse and complex educational system and variety of religious or philosophical beliefs, it is very hard.

The confusion comes from the terms being used. God is the one who calls. Some are call to marriage. Some to be husbands and wives. Some to be sons and daughters. Jesus said "I will build my church." We must be careful and follow the leading of the Holy Spirit. What is God saying concerning the issue. God is not the author of confusion.

Arg, I wish I weren't busy for this one! I would have called in! My denomination (Anglican Church in North America) is currently going over this debate. Most of our Bishops do not allow for the ordination of women to the priesthood (eldership). Some of the Bishops do. It is the most contentious debate in our circles. I would have loved to hear more about the nature of the threefold ministry of Bishop, Priest (elder), and Deacon. One of the things I see is that our understanding of this threefold office affects our understanding of women's roles within the Church. For instance, my home parish is very strongly opposed to women being ordained to the priesthood. However, we have women in various leadership roles in our church; they simply are not ordained. Also, there is no indication that women were ordained to the priesthood/presbyterate in the Early Church, or throughout Church History (until the modern era, of course); certainly not to the Episcopate. There were (and are) female Deacons/Deaconesses in Church History. As well, things like the women at the tomb, women learning at the feet of Jesus, women speaking in tongues, women even having the church meet at their houses, etc., speak nothing to the question of ordination. Women can and should spread the Gospel; that doesn't mean that women should be ordained. Looking forward to next week's episode!

Ok so 1 and 2 point complementarian is new to me. But it seems off Hermeneutically to use a cultural historical exegesis with 1 Tim and then use a literal grammatical on Ephesians to uphold headship in Marriage. They were written to the same congregation in Ephesus just one to the pastor other to the people and between them it was only 5 to 15 years apart.

And something we too often neglect, about Eph 5:25-33, is that Paul's point wasn't about marriage at all, but about Christ and his church (Eph 5:32). He was using the typical model of Greco-Roman marriage, with which everyone was familiar, to illustrate what our relationship (as the church) should be to our loving, self-sacrificial bridegroom, Christ. It was familiar, so it was used to communicate a deeper truth. It's the same logic of the parables of Jesus, or the illustrations of modern preachers.

So Paul says, I don't permit a woman to speak. He doesn't say the Lord commands, etc. I being the operative word. Also he, Paul states it's better to never marry. Does God say it's better to never marry or does Paul feel that way? ----Also, if the head covering is cultural, I am sure that women teaching men was frowned upon by the culture of that time. --I'm not convinced that women aren't called to be spiritual leaders. --I'll listen to part two next. Trying to do my best to figure it out. --The topic is really important because the rules apply to 50% of a church body. Also, if the men that say women should stay silent are actually keeping a female from what God is calling her to do, they will have to answer to God for that. ---A responsibility not to be taken lightly.

What if God really does want all Christian women to cover their heads when praying and prophesying? I personally think that is the best way to be consistent in applying God’s word and I wear a covering. It actually is hard for me when Miller always covers his head, I wish he wouldnt. But I am only responsible for my own obedience to scripture so I want to obey to the best of my ability as a woman stick to what it plainly says. Since until recently the church across all cultures actually wore head coverings and didnt allow women elders I think that the fact it has only changed since feminism took hold we have to be careful we are not letting culture change what scripture says.

Why don't we just believe what we read, instead of read what we believe? Doesn't Gods word transcend all ages, and time? Why do we get so theological? I wonder what would happen if we gave a bible to a person who had never heard of Jesus nor had access to any theological info or bible teachers. And we put him in a room for 10 years (hypothetical of course). How would that person live and explain these topics?
@UltraX34
@UltraX34 5 лет назад
Theology is meant to be understood within the context of the church. People trying to understand scripture on their own is actually very dangerous when it all becomes about their own personal interpretation. This is how heresies crop up (Arianism, Modalism, Docetism, etc). This is why we need people to submit to elders and be a part of the fellowship of the saints.
@UltraX34
@UltraX34 5 лет назад
Also theology is important. There are legitimate reasons as to why people disagree. How do you read the Bible? Do you read it through the hermeneutic of "law and gospel"? Do you read it through covenant theology or dispensational or new covenant theology? Do you read it as an Messianic Jew and believe everyone should live by the Torah, or as a New Covenant reader who believes the ten commandments no longer apply. Is Jesus physically present in the Lord's supper, or is it spiritual, or merely symbolic? Should children be baptized cause it can regenerate them, or because it brings them into the covenant, or should they not be because they have to repent and believe prior to baptism? Theology matters. It literally means "what one says about God" This is why we have to think about deeply about the word. There's nothing wrong with wrestling with things. The most important thing is to get the Trinity and the Gospel right. Then build on that.

I agree, i plan to begin rereading my Bible this way, asking the Holy Spirit to help me understand. I know we should count on our leaders to help, but people (me too) have become jaded about them. So many leaders abuse their position or twist God's word. Also God's word is not that complicated. We should not need a theological degree to understand it. How then could anyone be saved? The necessary doctrines are salvation by belief in Christ's birth, death, and resurrection and the Trinity. The rest really becomes secondary to salvation. The Bible lays out how to live as a Christian too. Again, not super complicated.

Simply because someone views the Scripture different from you does not mean they don’t believe what they read. Is Jesus literally a door? No, that is a metaphor. Theology and discussion is very important because it causes us to have checks and balances.

Where is the link to the 60 page article you referenced at the end of this video? Also, has the topic been discussed about if women should even hold the title of Pastor? To me this gives the essence of authority and headship. Should women pastors be called for directors or leaders or some different? Even if ordained?

Interesting how some would take women out of leadership role but then in the old testament there are how many books written about women.. which is a leadership role technically because it's in the bible? No offense meant, just an observation. You guys rock!

So what do we do with church historical understanding of these texts? Not that church history is the end all be al but doesn’t it have some weight? If there is such confusion about these texts, then why would we want to go against that historical understanding?

Armon Jorden there has been a huge historical confusion of women’s role in church. It’s not like there is universal agreement in church history. And even if there was history bears out many doctrines contrary to scripture.

The Remnant Radio no doubt, but still where the history has gotten it wrong, isn’t it clear today? I understand that the church has had blind spots, and continues I’m sure, but this doesn’t add up in my opinion. This looks more like society trying to rewrite the doctrine...

It must be sooo much easier for men to be complimentarian. It elevates them. It opens the door to so many positions and callings while shutting out half of the population. It even has the potential to puff them up, which I think is more prevalent than one might think. I appreciate this series. It's a painful subject for so many women, myself included.

Stephenie, thank you so much for your comment. Your concerns make sense if the premise is true. That being said, I’d like to push back a little, if that’s ok. Do you think it is easy for someone to grow up in the western culture in the 21st century and hold to complementarian views? I have only been a member of egalitarian churches my entire life. Just so you know I have lost sleep over being complementarian. Using scripture alone, careful study, I have wept and prayed for hours on end that God would show me and compel me to believe that the scriptures are egalitarian. Most churches I am aware of (outside of the rather small reformed community, which I am not a member of) are egalitarian. My view actually closes doors for me and does not open them. People have labeled me a bigot and chauvinist because of my views, it has not been easy. The culture is constantly pushing me to compromise what scripture clearly says with lofty exegetical arguments, philosophical reasoning, and historical reconstructionism, all witch seem to fall miserably short of a compelling response. Furthermore, if complementarianism is convenient for sinful men, why is it so convenient for a Righteous God? Thousands of years, with male judges, male priests, male kings, and male prophets, selected by God’s sovereign choosing. Certainly, there are few exceptions of women filling the role of judge/prophet in the rarest of circumstances, but the overwhelming evidence of King/Priest is exclusively male. If Complementarianism is a sinful desire that men use to oppress women and elevate man then why is God through the old testament oppressing women to such great lengths? In summation, I think arguments of intent are often just straw men that are used to paint our opponents as inconsiderate, bigoted, or ignorant so that we do not have to take their arguments seriously. If there was one biblical doctrine I wish I could do away with it would be the complementarian doctrine, unfortunately, I must submit myself to scripture, even if it kicks against my contemporary system of ethics and morality.

@@TheRemnantRadio thank you for replying. I should have made it clear that my comment was in no way implying how I view you guys. I've never seen men talk about this subject with such grace and love. Just the fact that you're open to learning shows you only want to honor God. You want the truth. Your heart's intent is not malicious or prideful. It has been refreshing listening to you guys. I grew up in complimentarian churches. As a little girl, God gave me a vision of me preaching. I've held that close to my heart all my life. Then at 14, I told my pastor about this vision. He sat me down and showed me how this could never happen. He explained that I'm more easily deceived - that I'm weaker than men - that I don't have discernment. He gave me material to read and sent me on my way. I cried in my bed at night frequently. It was like the wind was knocked out of me. I thought I knew God. I thought I knew what he thought about me. I felt betrayed and lied to. This was just one among many painful experiences I've had around this issue. I've had discussions with guys who almost seem to enjoy these verses because it promoted their male chauvinism (I do not use that term loosely - they were chauvinists.) They were never loving about it. It also made them angry. I was labeled a radical feminist... and they hated feminism (gotta add that I'm not a feminist). So, looking at my comment again, it hit me that there is still some bitterness in my heart towards men like them. I need to go before the Lord with this. Thank you for sharing a bit of your story. You made some good points as well.

I’m so sorry to hear that Stephenie. Stuff like this makes complementarian beliefs so difficult. Because complenentarianism can just be a smoke screen for chauvinism. On behalf of complementarians I’d ask for your forgiveness. I’m sincerely grieved to hear that this stuff happens. I know I have not personally done anything oppressive toward you. But as one small cog in the philosophical system of conplementarians I want to do my part I representing.

Stephanie please get Dr. Bill Rudd’s book “Should Women Be Pastors & Leaders in Church”. He gives biblical answers and goes into more than women’s roles in the church. He also discusses women’s and men’s role in marriage and society. Funny how a woman can be doctor, lawyer, CEO,...etc but the minute she walks into a complimentarian church she is reduced to a second class person who can not lead and or teach a man! All because she is female!!!! Is that Christianity? And man is the head of the woman. That does not mean BOSS. IT MEANS SOURCE. man is NOT WOMAN’S BOSS! . The Scriptures have been mistranslated and misinterpreted . Please get Dr. Rudd’s book. This book will explain the correct way the Scriptures should be interpreted ! Share it with everyone in your family. You and all of your family will be SO BLESSED! Also the description of egalitarian in the video is EXTREMELY LAME!

Stephanie, if God called you and gifted you- he has a purpose for you. Ask him to reveal his purposes to you. There is no scripture that says women can’t have discernment. I lead a thriving women’s ministry that equips women to study the Word and to live in the power of the Holy Spirit. Many women have believed the lie that they cannot be worth any good to God, or even understand his Word, simply because they are women. If you have a passion for the Lord- he sees it! He put it there. He knows your heart. I have realized there is exciting ministry to women that is untapped, because it is looked down upon as “lesser.” But, when you are faithful in the little things- to minister to those around you with Christ’s love and with truth and power - lives can be set free. So many women are seeing their prodigals turn back, their spouses healed , their anxiety removed... so many people getting saved. Our mighty little army of women rock the cradle and walk out their faith in prayer, fasting and deliverance. It is a spreading fire. I do hope you have not been too discouraged by some of the heartless voices. I do know how hurtful it can be to want to serve Jesus so desperately and to be looked down upon as lesser for wanting to serve him. (Thankfully the men in my church don’t do this... the leadership support me fully.) But Twitter can be ugly.

Conversely, Miller, I also don't think I should constantly have to defend myself from the charge of being heretical or anti Biblical for leaning egalitarian, or believing women can preach and teach! Even the complementarian women will nonchalantly level the charge of heresy. Stay away from the discernment blogs because as a woman, you'll get hit!

I shouldn't say this is a pointless discussion, but it all sounds so repetitive and dry. Yes, it's a huge topic right now, but as soon as everyone is bored of it, they'll go find a new topic to beat to death. No one will ever agree, because it's another thing that can't be proven 100% either way you look at it. Maybe we should spend our engery getting people saved...

I disagree. People just do not want to believe the bible so they twist the words by using mans opinions and texts outside of scripture. Egalitarianism is not biblical. Complimentarianism is very biblical (1 Tim 2, 1 Cor 14, Tit 3, 1 Pet 3:6).

Hey Sylvia, this is Fred, how are you and Steve doing? My wife and I wanted to invite you and your husband over for a BBQ on Tuesday. Great! See you then. Just wanted to make sure you understand Sylvia that on Sunday morning my wife Becky is your husband's shepherd and she watches over his soul and he's under my wife's guidance and is to submit to her. But on Tuesday, your husband Steve is to watch over the my wife and yours should anything go wrong with the BBQ and all. It's a new grill and I'm not confident she knows how to operate it safely. Please watch over the process and protect the ladies. I'll be running a little late. Egalitarianism is bizarre to any real man already leading a family and now being asked to place the well-being of his soul under the protection of your wife, "the shepherdess"! That's kinda kinky and effeminate. Good luck with that! Unnatural= unbiblical

Scripture says that we are to be like little children. Little children are taught Sunday by (high majority of) women. If we cause a child to stumble it'd be better to put a millstone around our neck..and women can't teach adults? Ridiculous that men apply rules to something when Jesus didn't. Discern the gift, observe the fruit. Of course the inner circle of disciples were men, it was the culture of the time.

I can understand your point of view, because there are things wrong in churches today. However, deciding that this issue is unworthy of consideration may mean that you don’t have a stake in women having an active role in the church, short of teaching children, wearing a head covering, being silent, and asking her husband what it all means. And if she doesn’t have a husband, well, too bad, I guess. I, and many woman I know, have a different point of view. We desire to use our gifts within the whole church, believing the Holy Spirit has given us something to say and do, to and for the whole body, not just women and children. By the way, I led my husband to Christ after 23 years of marriage. I did it by speaking to him, as well as laboring in prayer. And I still teach him because he strongly desires to learn from me. I definitely do not view this topic as you do.
