When cycling first became popular, the very participation of women in the sport was a topic of a public debate. But what about the women that made the decision to participate? In this episode we're reading tips and trick for female cyclists straight from 1896.

This book is SO inspiring to me as a female cyclist. I ride my bike everywhere I can even though I live in a car-centric American city. When I ride it I feel like I am connecting with my female ancestors. The bicycle is such a compelling symbol of democracy and empowerment and freedom. I need to go on a cross country bike tour with my gal pals now…

I have moved recently from the countryside to big city. First months were hard, but then my precious bicycle arrived. It was still winter but I decided to use it anyway and gosh. It was like new era! The whole word is open now, I can ride wherever want, found so many beautiful and wild places. The feeling of freedom during ride is overwhelming and i absolutely love it. So I can't imagine what women back then must have felt. I imagine 50 km were not enough!

As an equestrian, the warnings about not confusing the bike's and the horse's capabilities are very valid IMO. When I learned to drive a car, I found myself doing riding/cycling behaviors: leaning into the turn for no reason, sitting forward or leaning back in my seat as I sped up or slowed down, wishing I could make it scoot over sideways to parallel park. I couldn't begin to guess how many times I buckled up and had the instinct of "I forgot my helmet!" I learned to cycle from an early age too, so I never had issues mixing that up with riding a horse. But horses and bikes bear far more similarities in operation than horses and cars, so I can only imagine how much of an adjustment to one's instincts it would require, especially in an age where bikes were new!

Dynamo Jenny is a Short podcast from a few years ago about different experiences of women in cycling that is absolutely worth a listen ! I learned about cycle touring in 2019 and have gone on several small solo unsupported tours since then. There's something really unique and special about cycling alone, dealing with whatever weather happens, resting whenever you feel like it, and solving whatever problems come up. It can be scary but really empowering at the same time. I can only imagine what it must have felt like to experience early cycling in the Victorian times, what a cool text!

"Censure from many sources" indeed. My patriarchal father couldn't acknowledge my ability to ride a bike with ease -- before he could brag about his sons -- who had a more difficult time managing the machine. His embarrassment was palpable. Never mind Victorian times. This in the 1970s.🤣

I was the youngest of my siblings by far, but facing the opposite of that to a degree; being told by a sexist "father" that I *had to* ride a bike to be valid, even when I didn't really want to, that because I was not good at it and didn't enjoy it, I *had to* spend much more time on it than others, simply to be "good enough" to be compared to himself and my much older siblings (of which one was female, striving to fit into ideals posed by said sexist parent) that is unfortunately not a thing that has disappeared, and my "father" was growing up in the 70s, not me. It really reminds me that any extreme of prerequisites is damaging. A line which I think this woman navigated beautifully. This is probably the first time I've heard anything so focused on cycling and not felt horrible. I hope the potential joys you felt from it coming easily to you were not destroyed by such terrible parental behaviour.

A note about horse sense: Horses will guide themselves over familiar territory. Horses will avoid danger. Horses will stear themselves around rocks or uneven footing. Horses will respond to subtle directions of the rider. Horses do not require your exertion. Bicycles by contrast require the rider to watch where they're going, to stear with direct control, to be aware of hazards, and make it go, etc. Comparatively speaking, riding a horse was (and still can be) a rather brainless exercise.

On the water thing, yeah, the way the water plant I worked for as a summer job in university pretty much does the same for the city's drinking water, just on a different scale. Alum will act as a flocculant (yes, actual scientific word) which causes all the particles suspended in the water to stick together and settle out faster, then you pour that off the sediment and boil it to sterilize it. It's not going to remove a lot of toxins or heavy metals or anything, but boiling will kill any bacteria in the water so you don't get any of the deadly or inconvenient bacteria or worms you could find if you were using a pond or stream as your water source. My city pulls water out of the river, pre-treats it with enough chlorine to kill anything in it, then uses a flocculant (might actually have been alum, it was 20 years ago and I've forgotten), a settling tank and sand filter setup to catch the sediment, then to the filtered water, adds some lime to adjust the pH to be a bit on the alklaine side rather than acidic which makes the water taste better, and then adds chlorine and ammonia to kill bacteria and leave enough residual disinfecting in the water that has to get out to the further areas without tasting like a swimming pool but not have the water pipes go slimy. And the boiled water is gross thing, yeah, if you've ever noticed that freshly poured water tastes a lot better than water that's just been sitting around, but all you have is water that's been sitting out a while, try giving it a good shake. Aerating it makes a difference, though I couldn't t tell you why. I suspect the reason they advised against using ice in the boiled water is that back then, the ice available was carved out of the nearest body of water in winter and stored in ice houses so it would last into the summer, so that won't have been boiled and carries with it all the dangers of drinking out of the river that you're trying to avoid by boiling the water in the first place.
@M.Datura
@M.Datura 7 дней назад
The ice thing; especially when you realise that there's places in the world where they use ice, century old or even milennia old ice to store and exxamine historical compositions of materials in water. As far as I know they've even discovered virus that were around long before humanity was in any way organised.

I can't imagine the mental hurdle learning to ride a bike as an adult would be. I learned as a small child, when my brain was still in full motor skill development mode, with kiddie wheels on the bike! It's also hard to emphasize the liberation of bicycle transport over equestrian for everyone, not just women. Horses are expensive to aquire, keep, and maintain. They require specialized facilities to live in, round the clock attention and multiple feedings a day. A horse requires continuous training, not just for Its physical fitness, but to keep it obedient. Additionally, the rider requires greater skill, not just to stay on, but to convince the horse to follow their direction. A vehicle that could just be picked up, used, and put away when finished must have been revolutionary to them!

I was super tentative watching this because I don't like cycling, I don't like bicycle culture where I live, but this does give a different perspective that was present for some people, I just don't think women here had access to bicycles in this era. Pretty sure that was too rich. The only little bit that I see as inaccurate about the second to last "speech" she made (that is to say everything else sounds really true and well thought out to me), is that about prejudice: The only way to remove prejudice is for the people who have it to deal with it themselves.
