This is only the second brown trout I've carved.
The first one I carved was about two years ago.
So we'll see how far I've come when we see the difference between that one and this one when I finish.

The patience of Job burning all those scales. Great video.

Thank you! Yeah that’s definitely the most monotonous part of the carving but it’s worth it in the end

@@Danny_Harris-Arts speak of which I just bought a wood burner for the scales which uses the nichromium wire, will this still work for small scales such as a rainbow trout using the method you showed.
@Danny_Harris-Arts
@Danny_Harris-Arts 5 месяцев назад
@@almightybot3176it will, you may have to attempt several before you get one tuned in that works right. It’s way easier on bigger scales for fish like bass and crappie. Minor irregularities in the shape doesn’t hurt and makes it more organic. Minor irregularities in tiny 1.5 -2mm scale tips has the opposite effect and shows up more and It makes it harder to maintain a consistent pattern. I finally got a couple dialed in a couple days ago after I finished this one that I’ll use on the next trout I do.

7000 scales?? Your patience in wood working is admirable!

Thanks, Yeah it’s a monotonous part of the process but it’ll add another level of realism paint alone couldn’t give.

You do very impressive work. I've been thumbing through your videos. I want to carve a fish for my brother. Those kutzall bits would sure help with my rough outs. I can't bring myself to spend that kind of money yet. Thanks for sharing your expertise.

Looking great! I’ve been following your crappie and bluegill videos here in Minnesota for my spearing decoys I’ve been making. Thanks for the content!

Thanks for watching. I’ve had people ask me about carving fish decoys but down here in the south not many if any ever used one unless they went ice fishing somewhere up north in the past. I’d bet not many people down here have even heard of using a fish decoy for spear fishing. You should send me some photos of some of your work sometime. I have another subscriber that carved fish decoys and he used my crappie painting video to make some crappie decoys. He sent me one and it was pretty awesome.

Looks good Danny! I'm working on a 24 inch arctic char and I'm not looking forward to doing scales. I'll be using the exact scale tip you are using, but I'm only doing one side. Thank goodness!

I make most of my own scale tips, I just need to experiment more at making the micro sizes I need for trout. Burning scales is definitely not my favorite part of the process when carving trout 😝

Amazing work as always! Any plans on making something as big as the salmon that you painted? Maybe flathead catfish or striper?
@Danny_Harris-Arts
@Danny_Harris-Arts 5 месяцев назад
Thanks!! Yes, I’ve actually got plans to do at least a 40 inch flathead later in the summer after the World Taxidermy and Fish Carving Championships this August. I’m sure I’ll do a striper at some point also.

Danny, great work. I’ve just completed my 4th rainbow trout carving. Each one gets better, but I love how you do your scales. Where do you get the scale burner? I’ve struggled to find what I need. Enjoyed the video.
@Danny_Harris-Arts
@Danny_Harris-Arts 5 месяцев назад
The wood burner I’m using now is a Razortip with their BPH pen. It allows you to change out the tip. I bought it when I first started carving about a little over 3 years ago. It’s ok but it’s not as consistent as I’d like so I’m about to buy a Colwood. They have been around longer and have been a industry standard for pyrography and wood carving for years. If you’ll go to Bear Woods Supply Company at bearwood.com you can check their selection. If you use my name “Danny” in the promo code you can get 5% off any purchase. They are a Canadian company so if you live in here in the U.S. there’s no tax added. So that’s like another savings in itself. They have great customer service. If you call them you get a person and not an automated response.

hello danny, as always good work👍 takes a lot of patience. will the fourth part be the last part?
@Danny_Harris-Arts
@Danny_Harris-Arts 5 месяцев назад
Thanks, no there will probably be 5 maybe 6 parts. Part 4 will be permanently mounting the fins and eyes and sealing. Part 5 I’ll start painting and I may have to break that up into two parts so Part 5 will be airbrushing the base colors and there’ll likely be a part 6 to do the detail work by hand. I burned all the scales now I have to tip each one🫨😝 I’ll probably do the drawing after part 5 and announce the winner in part 6.

Dying laughing at myself - I kept looking at the clipped brown trout carving you used as reference (@7:12) - thinking, WOW - that's a great carving, wonder who did it.. is it one of Ed Walicki's or maybe Adirondack ... oh.. wait.. I made that one LMAO - well, I impressed myself lol - and huge complement that you found it useful! Looking good on your carving, too!

Yeah I never look forward to burning scales on a trout. Bigger fish like bass or crappie I don’t mind. I can usually do one in 4-5 hours. This one took 24+/- hours 😳🫨
