That turned out great you’re definitely multitalented, I did get given a cheap set of carving chisels for Xmas one year and they have been stuck on a shelf gathering dust for years and every time I see you carve something I think to myself I’ll have to give that a go, one day it might even happen 👌👌👌👍👍👍🇦🇺

I had the same problem with circle jigs. I went to woodcraft and they recommended the Milescraft circle cutting jig. It has a center plastic piece the jig pivots on and its where you drill the hole through. Instead of drilling a hole in the center I stuck it down with double sided tape. Worked like a champ. After the circle was cut i popped off the plastic center piece and i avoided having to cut a hole. You did a fantastic job on the sign btw. Really great work.

I really like how it came out. I have no luck hand carving with a chisel on cedar. I am sold on the Dewalt cordless router. Of course there are ten ways to achieve the same goal in woodworking usually.

Although you are using softer wood like cedar I am curious on how long do those die grinder carving tips last, how long before it becomes dull? Love the final product HB! Nailed the crust for sure!

This is hard to tell because I’ve had all those bits for quite a few years, but I don’t use them regularly enough to judge how long they last. If I was an everyday carver it would be easier to judge.

Really interesting how you do this type of work. Are your hands constantly braced tightly to avoid going too deep when you hit a soft patch of wood or are they relaxed but just feeling how the density changes? I tend to get a lot of cramping in my hands when carving.

That is another bonus to this cedar, the grain is fairly consistent so extremes between hard spots and soft spots weren't that bad. This is one of the things that never comes across in all these woodworking videos, and that's the strain of holding tools, how much pressure to apply, force, direction, etc. etc.

Interesting job,great video and a lot of work. 😅 Wondering if using a 2 part epoxy for the joints and a clear sealer (danish oil)prior to varnishing would make it a little more weatherproof?(not a criticism just learning) Adding an overhead projector to my tool wishlist now!!

This was installed under an awning so I wanted an exterior grade finish, but I wasn’t overly concerned about the elements on this one.
