Wood ducks are fancy waterfowl native to North America. The males of this species sport colorful plumage lending to their scientific name which means something along the lines of "waterfowl in a wedding dress." Wood ducks are unique waterfowl because they use their clawed, webbed feet to cling to tree branched on which they will perch. They're some of the only perching waterfowl! Wood ducks lay their eggs in tree cavities built by other animals. When the time comes for leaving the nest, their babies must plummet upwards of 65 feet (20m) to catch up with their moms!
Scientific Name: Aix sponsa
Range: North America (not found in the Rocky Mountains)
Size: 18in (46cm) length; 2ft (61cm) wingspans; 1.5lb (680g) weight
Diet: mostly seeds including those in terrestrial habitats, really enjoy acorns, also fruit and insects
Lifespan: 3-4 years on average; more than a decade if able to survive this long

In my area, southern Illinois, me and fellow duck hunters do a yearly “river run” in February. We load the boats up with fresh sawdust, wood duck boxes to replace broken ones and clipboards to log the successful hatches. We all pic a different stretch of the river and map/log all our woodduck boxes, crazy duck hunters. 😂

The first Wood Duck I ever saw was perched in a tree with his mate. I thought “ducks don’t perch in trees.” I noted it in my journal and went home to reference my Peterson field guide. Sure enough, when I turned to the plate for Wood Ducks the first sentence in their description was “often perches in trees.” I knew then that I had seen my first Wood Duck I the field. They’re a very cool bird.

When I was a kid, we had squirrels living in the oak trees on a terrace between our deck and the lake down below. One year, the wood ducks took over the nest, which meant that the squirrels would never come back. The only interesting part of it was watching the babies drop from the nest down to the ground when they were ready to hit the lake

I’ve never heard anyone call these Carolina ducks which is surprising because I’m from South Carolina. Turns out people in the UK call them that because they are native to the Carolinas were first discovered here and are plentiful here. I’m also glad these things didn’t go extinct I love hunting them. They are the best tasting duck in my opinion.

My wife just spotted some wood ducks show up in our front yard this morning. We have some huge Sycamore trees that they use for laying and brooding their eggs. The holes are at least 40 feet high, maybe higher. It is amazing how the ducklings can take such high leaps and so shortly after hatching! Loved your video.
