Introducing the Bunkie Life wood fired hot tub. It’s completely electricity-free and heated using a wood fired stove. It’s the perfect off grid hot tub.
How does it work? Water gets siphoned in, goes through the heater, heats up, and goes back into the hot tub. No pumps are needed; everything works without electricity. The wood stove and chimney are included with every kit.
It doesn’t need a lot of wood to heat up; it reaches a nice temperature in a couple of hours, then you can fine-tune the airflow and wood to keep it at the temperature you want. Airflow dampers regulate how much heat you want to keep pumping through once it’s up to temperature.
Wood fired hot tubs are economical because there is no ongoing electricity expense to operating and enjoying your hot tub.
Set up is not complicated; we recommend 3-4 people to help move it to your desired location on your property. Set up of the hot tub should take less than 30 minutes.
Maintenance is easy; drain your hot tub with the drainage tube and clean the inside by wiping down the interior with soap and a soft cloth.

This is a dream! I love that you don't need chemicals! I got to use a wood-powered hot-tub when I was visiting in Chilliwack BC (the tub itself was a large rubbermaid so this is definitely a step up!) I guess the trick is figuring out what the standard windflow direction would be so that you're not sitting with a face full of smoke while trying to relax. If I win the bunkie, I'll be saving up for this add-on for sure! :D

How does it do in our harsh winters. Do you need to empty them all the time? Does the water move in a circular motion on its own? Love this concept and seriously considering.

Most of our clients drain them for the winter, you can also use a small pond heater to keep it above freezing when not in use. The water DOES move in a circular motion on it's own (while the fire is lit in the fire-box). Not super fast, but does a good job circulating the heat. The bottom hole/tube sucks in the colder water (lower in the tub), and the upper tube/hole outputs the hot water.

Hey David! Love this! With chemicals not being recommended, how often do you need to drain the unit to clean?

We are cleaning it about every two weeks: that's with a lot of use and 3 small kids. Your results may vary. -David

Man this is pretty slick, we want one for out boat access cottage. Would I be able to bring on a pontoon boat? Also we get a lot of snow here in the north woukd the cover handle the snow load?

Hey Lee Sorry for the delay on response. I think it's very doable on a pontoon boat as long as you have the manpower to get it onto the boat (and it's big enough the diameter of the hot tub is 6'). The cover is very strong and curved so it'll shed snow and hold anything that sticks on top of it no problem.

This is really cool! Can you tell me how it is filtered and do you recommend chemical treatment for it?

Hi Alison! We recommend draining the hot tub with the drainage tube and cleaning the inside by wiping down the interior with soap and a soft cloth. Chlorine, chlorine-containing and other chemicals are not recommended.

WoW old school, now I am debating whether to go with Bunkie or hot tub or both for my cottage. Do you honor Canadian military discount? Thanks

For winter use at a secondary property we are at on/off what kind of maintenance would be required? (Ie, would it need to be kept heated all the time? Would it need to be drained in between use if left unattended filled for a couple of weeks?) trying to imagine how we would use and maintain over the winter months. Thanks!

Hey Jennifer, great question. Most clients are draining their tubs in the off-season. For people that want to it available in the winter, you'll need a small heater to keep it from freezing.
