To determine the number of pieces take 360 / angle / 2 so 360 / 12 / 2 = 15 You can also find the angle by 360 / pieces / 2 so 360 / 14 / 2 = 12.86 360 / 15 / 2 =12 360 / 16 / 2 =11.25 You can see that for less than 1 degree either way will add or subtract an extra piece.
@topgundk
@topgundk 10 лет назад
About the angle. A full circle is 360 degrees. Each stick have 2 sides. If you want 16 sticks the angle of cut must therefor be 360 / 2 / 16 = 11.25 degrees 15 sticks 360 / 2 / 15 = 12 degrees 14 sticks 360 / 2 / 14 = 12.85 degrees The glue gives you a little play in the angles.
@ToonOfLancing
@ToonOfLancing 10 лет назад
Similarly, if you accurately set the cut for 12 degrees, the pot will take exactly 15 slices. The width of the slices affects the overall size of the pot but not the number of slices needed. Simple yet elegant project - thank you.
@mykhelderian

TY. I was stumped as to how that angle stuff happened. I knew it had nothing to do with the width of the boards but I was only considering 14 edges rather than 28.
@HydraSR
@HydraSR 4 года назад
@@ToonOfLancing : If you use an odd number with two colors, you'll get two of the same color next to each other at the end. 14 is fine but the correct angle is closer to 13 than 12 degrees (12,86 to be precise). However, if you make the angle a bit smaller than necessary, you'll get gaps in the inside. If you do the other way around, you get gaps in the outside. So from this point of view, 12 is still better than 13, but maybe 12,5 can be set roughly on the table saw. I don't think it is possible to set 12,86 precisely.

***** A 12 degree bevel should have yielded 15 pieces (360 deg / (12 deg * 2) = 15), so given slight variation in the blade angle (and the necessity for an even number of pieces for this projects), both the 14 and 16 piece versions make sense!

The math is quite easy, number of slats wanted (strips) say 12 strips divide by 360 degrees gives 30 degrees so each slat will get a 15 degree angle on each side which equals the 30 degrees. To get a bigger diameter just make the slats wider. This is the process that I use to make bowls etc on my lathe. Cheaper than trying to find large blocks of wood to turn.

can I ask you a question ?. well you answer half of my question already now let's assume the top and the bottom are different widths how can I measure that for example, the top is 24 inches in diameter and the bottom is 14 the angle still be the same 15 degrees? for the slats strips) ?.

It might be obvious, but make sure the angle you choose results in an even number of pieces, or you will end up with two of the same color as neighbors. If you'd really have had 12 degrees, you'd have had 15 pieces...which doesn't work.

I love watching all wood working videos on RU-vid same way as I (and rest of the world too, I guess) hates your imperialistic measuring system. What the hell is a quarter of an inch, for wood sake!? ;-) 1 km = 1000 m, 1 m = 100 cm, 1 cm = 10 mm A quarter of an inch is 2,54 cm / 4 = 0,635 cm What the hell!? :-)

answer to Gia Rcheulishvili that says: "steve, you're getting lazy! get to do some difficult and more interesting projects, no one needs a god damn flower pots. as a woodworker you must make a wood to a good use, the use that you can not get from other material. " Is it obvious sir, that you don't, or cannot, understand what is the aim of a channel like the Steve one. If you want more complex works there a bunch of other places on internet where you can learn how to make your woodworker life much complex. Last but not least this is a free channel and no one force you to spend your precious time in such a "god damn" projects. Probably your skillness is wasted for a place like this, so be so kind to don't make all of us awarned about our simpleness, let us stay in our useless world of mom's flower pots, use your time and your great skill to improve your capacity and open a your own channel where the "real woodworkers" like you could appreciate your surely incredible ability! BTW New Yankee Workshop is ended, I suggest you to contact your local tv and made "Better Yankee Workshop", a program for No-Mother-Woodworkers! Best regards sir from an italian wannabe-american-woodworker Hope you understand my poor and funny english.... oh yes how could I doubt...surely you are much intelligent and clever rather than the simple people that usually appreciate this channel... with all my " respect".......

Steve. Maybe someone already replied, but just divide 360 by the number of pieces to get the angle for the joint. Divide that by 2 to get the cut angle. TaDa! easy breezy...
@StewTrekBoxes
@StewTrekBoxes 10 лет назад
so my guess on the size difference is this: angles to make up a circle add up to 360 degrees. 14 strips with 2 bevels at 12.8 degrees gives 360 16 strips with 2 bevels at 11.25 degrees gives 360 so just 1 degree difference can account for 2 pieces of wood. you gave best advice though! just make a few extra :) nice project, im going to make some
@Khether0001
@Khether0001 10 лет назад
.*_about the degrees..._* what happened is that you've made the cuts closer to 13º than 12º that's why it took one less piece, minimal errors (less than 1 degree in this case) add up a lot in this case. if you want to use a specific number of pieces you can divide 180/nº of pieces and you'll have how many degrees you must cut each one: .*[degrees] = 180 / [nº pieces]*
@markusdammasch9108
@markusdammasch9108 10 лет назад
The sum of all the angle of the joints in a circle must add up to 180 deg. If you used "exactly" 12 degrees then you would need to have 15 of those joints, hence 15 slats. Because only 14 pieces were needs tells me that you must have cut your angles slightly off this time -- ie. 180 / 14 = 12.85 deg. On the first one you used 16 slats -- that means the angles cut there must have been a bit out the other way -- ie. 180 / 16 = 11.25 deg cuts.

EnviroTex is great stuff (even rumored to be safe for food contact, though they never paid for the FDA seal of approval). It's basically the same stuff that people use to seal wood bar tops, reclaimed-wood tables, etc. If you find yourself using it on more visible surfaces you'll notice that you get a lot of small bubbles showing. Just wait a couple of minutes after application and "brush" quickly with the flame from a butane plumbing torch to make them all go away and give you a really clean surface.
@Nmaley101
@Nmaley101 10 лет назад
In regards to your "mathematical way" to figure it out: all you have to do to determine the number of slats required is do 360/2x. x representing the angle you cut the slats on with your table saw. By the way, thickness of the pieces makes no difference as long as they are all the same. This will work for any polygon (excluding triangles), and can even be manipulated to tell you the angle that you need to cut to achieve a certain number of slats. I.E, If I want an octagon (8 sides) I can do 360/2(8) and it will tell me the degrees I need to cut at the table saw (or miter saw for that matter). In this case, it is a 22.5 degree angle.
@surfcello
@surfcello 10 лет назад
You cut 12 degree bevels on either side of each slat? That makes 24 degrees from slat to slat. 360/24 = 15, so you'd need 15 slats rather than 16 or 14. Add to this that you might not have placed them as tightly as possible on the masking tape, and you have your answer.

all your angles need to add up to as close to 360 you must have been closer to 13 degrees 14 slats with 2 12 degree angles is close enough for wood with all the glue joints the closest i got just by fumbling around with a calculator was 12.857 which gets you 359.996 but were really spliting hairs on that level
@ktjwilliams
@ktjwilliams 10 лет назад
No matter the width, the formula for figuring your angle and number of pieces is ... 180 degrees divided by number of sides you want .. 180 divided by 4 is 45, so 45 degrees would be your angle for a four sided box, frame or what ever ...

I make tapered wooden buckets, and tapered wooden butter churns. They are just for decoration, the tapered wooden buckets will hold water, if they are caulked with oakum. But the butter churns are not recomended for use, as they are subject to bacteria. There is a formula for getting the right bevel on the stays, for a non tapered cylnder. Devide the number of stays into 360, this will give you the correct angel to set the table saw blade. there is another formula for getting the correct width of the stays for the desired diameter of the vessel. But I know you dislike complicated math in wood working, so I will leave that alone.

Steve, to be exact the 12°angle should have used 15 pieces to form a circle assuming everything right on the money. the width of the slats would make no difference in number of slats but would give a larger or smaller size with all the slats the same size. i plan on making one of these then turning true round in my lathe.

At 16 cuts out of 360 degrees, it only takes being about .2 of a degree off on the bevel to end up with needing less or more pieces. On a saw, .2 of a degree can be tough to impossible to factor out.

@athiker7209
@athiker7209 10 лет назад
I think the answer lies in how accurate the angle is cut. A 12 deg bevel on each side totals 24 degrees. Since you're wanting to complete a circle, 360 deg divided by 24 equals 15 pieces. So the 14 to 16 pieces depends of the accuracy of the bevel cut. Nice project, regardless. The hose clamps are a great idea. I'll have to remember that.
