Wood Turning The Best Ever Segmented Turning

I turn a very complex segmented turning with 414 segments.
It was a nice vase shape using 3 types of wood. Bloodwood, Quarter Sawed Oak and Teak. I used Wenge for the base and the top rim.
Some of the rings were very small so the segments were as well. I had to come up with a way to get them held together while the glue dried.
Be sure and look for that method. It worked like a charm.

Thank you very much Derek. Happy you liked this one. I try to do turnings like this as much as possible. They do take time so I also like to do turnings from chunks of wood. Hope you like them as well. Take care, Gary

Oh Papa! What have you done? The patience. The patience. 😵‍💫 Four hundred little blocks of wood. Each one carefully glued and positioned to form a ring. Then stacking the rings, oh so carefully, in just the right position. Untold hours just waiting for glue to dry. Turning here and there to make sure every surface is properly smooth. Then the finish 🌟🤩🌟! I am totally exhausted 🥵 and all I did was watch! I believe you have outdone yourself this time. That is one magnificent, beautiful piece!!! Thank you. Keep the aspidistra flying! God bless, Paul

Thank you Paul! I am not exhausted from reading what you just said I did LOL. I never wait for the glue to dry. I use that time to get other pieces. I glue rings on then glue up another set of rings. Or I get things ready for a new project. Thanks for watching, Gary

Gary, undoubtedly you have been at this for a while. I turned one about 6/7 years ago and wanted to do another one, but time seems to get away from me. Always have projects on the list and now after watching your videos it will be on the list to start again. Beautiful work and keep it up. Gives me inspiration and being 77, almost 78, to do something new and different. Have to study and re-educate myself. Have the tools and have to get them dusted off. Thanks again!

Absolutely beautiful. It is 8;30 pm here in South Dakota and I just googled the software you mentioned and was expecting to leave message, but to my surprise the owner answered! I probably annoyed him with all my questions but wow what a great experience. i mentioned you referring me to him in this video, and very down to earth and honest man. He did not try to up sale me he sincerely down sold me to a free trial version. So good to be part of this community in getting my start! By the way he did also mention how easy you make things look as an expert experienced turner, which I have mentioned my self in my comments to your videos lol. Thanks again for steering me in the right direction.

This must have taken forever Gary. Honestly, I don't think I'd have the patience for a piece like this. The turning is the least work, just endless cutting & glueing segments. But the result is a unique piece, you don't find these in a thrift store. 😎
@ThePapa1947
@ThePapa1947 2 года назад
Well Leo it did take awhile. I think sitting in a barber shop getting my hair cut is endless. Playing chess can seems endless just to get to one move. Doing these I do not consider endless. It is process to reach a final goal. Like playing chess each step needs to be thought out to achieve success. I think what I did for a living would seem endless as well. Building patterns takes a long time for some of them. Weeks and months. But like chess each step needs to be thought out to avoid not leaving a way to get to the end. But I am following this one up with a couple of very back to basic wood turnings. I sure hope these do not end up in the thrift store!

Many thanks Andy. I do have a lot of patience for this type of stuff. When it comes to other things I have no control over not so much LOL. I have had one to many pieces of wood launched by rubber bands and I find this much easier than a ring of nails to hold the rubber bands and then fumbling to get it around the segments. This was a lot of fun just watching the piece grow and come together, Gary. The Wenge is absolutely perfect for bringing this piece together. I really like the defining look it gives to the overall turning. Your design is impeccable! Your joints are impeccable! Your finish is extraordinary! Absolutely one of your best segmented pieces ever! I REALLY like it! Have you considered entering this or some of your other segmented pieces into a county fair or something like that? I think you'd come home with a trunk load of trophies. So well done, my friend! 😃👍 🏆 Phil

Hi Phil happy you enjoyed it. I must say I had fun stacking those rings watching it grow out of the bench. Now if I could just do it without needing to make all those rings! I knew I wanted to use the Wenge but kept fighting with myself because it can be a bear to turn and end up having a big piece chip out right before your done. That is where the NRS comes in handy. No I have not thought about entering it in fair at all. I guess I am kind of an odd hermit when it comes to that stuff. Or I am just odd LOL. I sure appreciate your fine words my friend. Gary, you win the internet for this week. What a success! That is exquisite. All of that precision to end with such elegance, form and finish. Well done. My problem with preventing running when sealing is because of dye or other embellishments, not so much wood bleeding. My airbrush with wipe on poly has worked, and I recently had great success spraying my home mixed 1.5lb cut shellac. I had eight coats on in an hour, but waited until the next day to polish. Just thought I'd share that as an additional option. This video was worth the wait.
@ThePapa1947
@ThePapa1947 2 года назад
Thank you Jay! That was very kind of you to say. I have wondered how well the wipe on poly sprays. I bet the Zinsser Seal Coat would spray nice. I would like to give them both a try. I know you can get the Zinsser i a spray can but it is costly. What are you using for a air brush? I have 3 and used to spray my CNC carvings with it all the time. I used Deft lacquer for that. I would love to hear more about your spray setup. Take care, Gary

@@ThePapa1947 My pleasure to explain... It's the cheapest knockoff "Timbercraft" brand I could find. $40 CAD on Amazon. Reason being I wasn't certain I'd manage it with my paralyzed fingers so I wasn't going big on an experiment. That experiment included these finishes, which I knew might gum it up beyond cleaning. So far, so good, acetone & mineral spirits being a better cleaner than 99% Isopropyl. It has a fixed cup, I'd prefer interchangeable and bottom drawing. As well, I preferred a one action trigger, not dual air rate and flow rate. Again, additional dexterity concerns. Now that I know what I need I will keep an eye out for the replacement for when this one is becoming worn out.
@ThePapa1947

@@jayscott306 thanks. Sounds like the 2 I have. They are bottom drawing as well. I also have another one that has a cup on the top. I bought that for spraying acrylic bodies for RC cars. I may have to give one of mine a try but I have good luck wiping on the wipe on poly and the shellac. Still worth trying. Thanks!

@@ThePapa1947 Exactly, you're doing fine wiping it on. I needed a better solution and this little thing has changed my finishing of embellished pieces, forever. Glad to find such an easy solution. I should add, that I never considered the polishing after the finish until you demonstrated it to us. Thank you for that. It's a fine finish without, but the polish brings it to life more than de-nibbing and buffing.

Thanks so much Kevin. I do love doing them but it is hard to do one every week as they do take a lot of time. Plus I buy all the wood for this type of turning. Chunks of trees are free and people are happy to give them away. I just picked up some Magnolia and you will be seeing the first turning from it soon. Take care, Gary

Well, it was worth the wait. I shake my head thinking about the hours of detailed cutting and gluing but the end result is stunning. As always, the tips and techniques you offer are appreciated and I'll have to put them to good use. I would not argue with your wife, but this piece will not be about the flowers!

Thanks so much Josh. For sure I had some time in it. But I enjoy it all and it sure is worth it when it is done. I don't think there will be flowers in it. Certainly not real ones. Take care, Gary

Very very nice Yoda! I really liked it before you finished it (as well as finished of course 😉). Wondering if you, or anyone, has ever tried any of the really natural floor finishes like Osmo Polyx Raw or Treatex Natural? I made a wedgie sled this weekend, have been watching Earl and his string clamps - and watching you and your segmented journey... I'm slowly building up to having a go! Thank as always.
@ThePapa1947
@ThePapa1947 Год назад
Thank David. I have not tried any of those finishes. I find most of those types need to be redone after a while. This sits on a shelf and that finish will last. I have used Howard Butcher Block oil for snack bowls. As well as Acks sanding paste and his polishing paste. Both food safe. I no made Earls clamps but have found the stainless steel hose clamps easier to use. And the stainless ones work great and are strong. The other ones just do not last. I get mine on Amazon. Thanks for watching. Gary

For those who are interested, here below is the formula for calculating the outer edge length of a segment for any diameter and number of sides. For convenience, I made up a spreadsheet table for rings up to 10" diameter and 14 sides, and placed it on the shop wall. Segment Edge Length = Diameter x tan(3.1416/number of sides)
@ThePapa1947
@ThePapa1947 2 года назад
Thank you for the formula. For those who do not like the math I recommend this free App for your phone. Segment Calculator 2 It will give not only the segment length but the width of the segment and how much material needed. I have extra phones I use for various things. One is my shop phone for doing this. Another I use as a GPS and mapping phone for long bicycle rides. They do not need to be connected to any service to run these apps.
