That was awesome! In the real world I bet that'd last for a decent amount of time if you tried limited slipping... Idle to get going from a stop and shift smoothly. It's biggest enemy would be heat from slippage just turning the wood rapidly to smoke. Wood disappears fast when it smokes from friction.

These Garage 54 videos taught me one major thing. The Lada 2100s are such stupid simple cars they can be fixed easily, with rudimentary parts if you have no choice, and they are surprisingly tolerant to various sorts of abuse. The Italian/Soviet engineering of these vehicles is the definition of 'genius in simplicity'.

At the time of the space race, you guys made oak heat shields for capsule reentry and it worked. Why not use oak instead of plywood whose glue is going to be prone to burning? Oak is hardwood and upon burning it would turn into carbon, so it should work well ;-)

With the right wood, such cladding will work well, though certainly not as long and efficiently as modern cladding materials. Few people remember that, for example, in cars like AWZ Sachsenring P-70, brake pads had wooden friction linings. It is possible that the clutch linings were also made of this material, but I don't remember anymore.

Try the old carbon tetrachloride trick on a crapped out clutch plate, we used to do that in the scrapyards to see if a gearbox was good without having to drop it all to put a new clutch in, squirted it liberally in via the inspection hole and be very careful as that stuff is nasty nasty, don't get it on skin or eyes or breath it in. I learned a lot from this pair of gypsies who worked for my uncle, introducing me to injected concrete sills and chassis rails, carb tetra on the clutches, fine sawdust in a bad gearbox or diff, oh the tricks them two knew were genius.
@Henrik.Yngvesson

Wet clutches like those on most motorcycles are made of cork or similar material, and soaked with oil you get a suction like effect which makes it grip and therefor it can slip and slide with little wear.
