Wooden Scales for my Leatherman

I recently did an Interview with Leatherman and as a "Thank You" they sent me a couple of their Multitools.
I am especially impressed with the Crater Knife
But I am not a big Fan of the Plastic Scales so I decided to make my new knife a bit more fancy and give it wood and brass handles.
The project is pretty straight forward and quick but it is so satisfying to make things you own and improve objects to your own taste.

the thing I as a "craftsperson" myself so enjoy about Laura is the projects (many whimsical) she does and the wide ranging skill set she employs. and there is also a sense of comfort in watching her with the music and graphics like "oops" when she split the cover of that knife when drilling the hole. And also then watching her address the solution to an excellent result. laura, you really are a craftsperson #1.

I'm always impressed when you show what goes wrong, not just what goes right. To paraphrase you - "don't focus on the mistakes, just keep going"!

Sweetened with love, and thank you for adding the broken bit, after all we are living in a broken world, fixing what we can is a step in the right direction. Shalom

Laura, I am so amazed by how you can take things apart, improve or replace the other parts and put everything back together like it's brand new. I just hope that you had your metal stamp inlaid on one side of the handles. It's a beautiful custom job. God bless! I can't wait for next week's video!

Bloody hell can i just say that video was probably the most original and uniquely shot video on RU-vid. The use or different camera angles and lenses along with a nice flow made the video even more entertaining. The use of the bright pink tape also made the video easy to follow. That was seriously impressive good job!

Great how to. Keep them coming. As a shop instructor, I talk safety to my students all the time. I teach them to keep the blade guide close to the thickness of the material they are cutting on the band saw. I noticed you had the guide quite high while you were cutting the sides out. I hope this was just for the video. Love your channel and can't wait for the next one.

Excellent !!! Most would have thrown away the split half, but you worked thru it and it came out looking as good as new and stronger. If you carry this knife in your pocket, over time, the process of carrying it and taking it in and out of the pocket will result in a deep natural luster on the wood, making it even that much more attractive. Good job !!

when you fixed the broken wood piece i expected you to throw it out and start fresh, but then you fixed it and i immediately had a deeper understanding of "every defect gets respect" to me it means you dont just retry with a new piece or buy a new tool or appliance when they break, you fix them and/or give them a new purpose, you respect them, and make sure to waste as little as possible. I really love this channel and your work, your an awesome person and most likely a great friend!. keep up the good work!

When gluing, It's actually a good idea to wipe the exceeding glue with a wet toothbrush. It helps filling any possible gaps and makes sanding easier ;) For the record, I don't recommend using the brush for cleaning teeth afterwards. Cool video as always and music, too.

I saw the thumbnail and thought you got into knifemaking, oh well. I recommend a heavy marine varnish or painting a thin layer of gorilla clear epoxy over the wood handle, it will help keep it looking good thru heavy use. Sliding in and out of pockets strips finishes so you need the crazy durable ones.

My guess it's either because of German knife laws(can't every-day-carry it in public, just for home/shop use) or because of the general scumbaggary of clothing manufacturers who like to deny women usable pockets :/

Have you seen the new Leatherman FREE line? I just got the new K4 knife yesterday in Slate. Highly recommend. Aluminum scales and the on board tools are really handy. Scissor, Phillips, sharp awl, flat blade scraper, pry toolwith side cutter and wire stripper. All one hand operation. The blade is a super cool shape too. I also own the P4 multitool and the T4 pocket tool. Very cool designs. They also make smaller versions of each, the P2, T2 and K2. As a Leatherman fan I enjoyed the new designs but still love the classics too. Great video.
