In the late summer of 1969, entrepreneurs Joel Rosenman & John P. Roberts teamed up with music insiders Michael Lang and Artie Kornfeld to pull off the most historic concert of all time: Woodstock!
Banned from the original site in Wallkill, NY because of public outcry of invading hippies, the 4 promoters were forced into finding an alternative. A local dairy farmer, Max Yasgur, opened up his property and the event was staged for the 3 days of peace and love.
Running out of time to prepare the site, fences were incomplete around the event. Tickets had been sold leading up to Woodstock, but to prevent tragedy the concert was announced free.
A total of around 400,000 people had attended the three day concert by the end of Monday morning with 32 acts appearing on stage.
In 2008, the Museum at Bethel Woods opened on the original site and is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The museum features unique displays of the Woodstock experience and the culture surrounding the late sixties.
