Well you was as busy as a bee Huw making those little dippers. Wooden It Be Nice if the wood would have behaved. The wood was being a real Beech as some can be. What you ended up with looks great. I have worked with some Beech that just did not seem to have a strong grain structure. Your plan was well laid out and I am sure you will breeze right through the next batch. Take care Hwyl, Gary
😂😂😂😂 Well that put a smile on my face Gary. I was surprised with how many failed, there was no warning just bang. My friend Kevin has offered some Beech if I need to make any more. He cut the tree up and seasoned it as well. Take care my friend. Hwyl, Huw
I have used a lot of European Beech for carvings on my CNC mill. I have to be careful how I program the first roughing cuts with flat end cutters because it will split easy on the edges. once passed that and I am using ball nose cutters it works fine. I like the grain in it for carvings though.
Haha, well, I can't possibly top Gary's comment so I'll just say, looks like a fun way to pass the time in the shop! Good job on the ones that worked and good lessons learned on the ones that didn't. I'm sure these will become easier and more successful and will likely sell really well at your market. Have a great day, Huw! 😊 Phil
Thanks Phil, Gary's comment did make me smile. Hopefully they will sell well and the customer will order more from me as he sells his own honey from his own bee hives. I have some nicer Beech coming from my friend Kevin so the results should be better. Take care my friend. Cheers, Huw
Thanks Jojo, I always show when thing don't work ot as you rightly say it's not a perfect science we take part in. Take care my friend and thanks again. Cheers, my Huw
Nice Huw. Good to hear that the customer is happy with them. I have a similar request. Pretty sure that when I go in with dippers she is going to want jars as well. I may be able to supply what she wants. 🙄 I’ll be watching for you in a couple of weeks. Have a fantastic show.
Bottom line is The Client Was Happy ! Glad you pushed on and conquered the job. They do look nice. Take care my friend. -Mike p.s. hope your craft market is a huge success !
Production.... not my favorite kind of work (although I made quite a large amount of (Turkish) drop spindles and thousands of miniature fruit cases. I admire the fact you get to the right number after the obvious mishaps. Wishing you the best from the Barbacena Backyard (Yes, the lonesome hill is swapped for a more lively neighbourhood), where it will take at least a few months before we start on rebuilding an old shed into a workshop. Whether there's going to be a lathe.. we'll see. Take care, be save, hoping for a warm and creative spring from Portugal.
Hi Gerrit, I have to admit I would prefer to make 20 individual pens than 20 of the same thing. I did buy enough wood to allow for mishaps as I'm not very good at spindle work and also quite rusty. Hope you both are settling into your new home in the Barbacena Backyard. Looking forward to the videos of you getting your new workshop into order. Take care my friend. Cheers, Huw
Nice to see you back at the lathe Huw! You were smart to make a story board. I just eyeballed mine and they look similar but not uniform 😂. I’ve had the wood fail me as well so don’t feel bad about some not working out. Cheers! Stuart
Thanks Stuart, A story board is very useful. The front ends of all of them are the same but I did change the tops o them just for some design looks. I was disappointed in the amount of pieces that failed. Take care my friend. Cheers, Huw
Hi Valerie, Great to see you as well. I have to admit I prefer to do my individual pens rather than production work but if I get further orders I will of course fulfil them. Take care Valerie and thanks for you good wishes. Cheers, Huw
Great little dippers, really enjoyed this video except.i didn't get a notification so I have re done the little bell icon thingy. Also thanks for showing some of the sanding. The only problem I can see is that because it's measured in inches it won't work outside the UK.
Thanks Andy, HAHA, its quite weird because for some things I automatically work in Imperial and other in Metric. When I do my next pen I'll explain what I do in detail. Take care mate. Cheers, Huw
Hi Phillip, Thanks very much. As I said I'm no spindle turner and I honestly feel the results would have been totally different if I had tried to use a spindle gouge. The EWT Beading cutter did a great job and one day I will use it for the piece I intended to use it on. It just came into my mind that it would give me repeatable results which I think it did. Thanks for watching mate and taking the time to comment, really appreciate it. Cheers, Huw
Thanks Conor, Temperamental, I think that's the word that came to mind when they kept failing. Might have been another word perhaps. LOL. Take are mate. Cheers, Huw
Hi Ruben, I enjoy batching pens as I make each one slightly different. I found tis repetitive which is exactly what production work is. Take care my friend. Cheers, Huw
Production anything is not my bag Huw, you done good pity bout the failures, I assume just wild grain / wood defects as your turning would be spot on I’m sure 😉. Have a great craft market 🤞👍
Thanks Steve, Production work is not my favourite by any means but the rewards are nice. Looking at the failures the grain towards the middle was not as close as th outer edges. Take care mate and the market got off to a great start yesterday. Cheers, Huw
Thanks Mike, At the beginning each one was taking around 6 minutes to do. Towards the end it was taking between 3 & 4 minutes each. They were very easy to clean. Take care mate. Cheers, Huw
I've never understood why you would use a honey dipper. A spoon gets right to the bottom of the pot and you can lick it a lot easier than a dipper! Could you have used your contour gauge instead of the story board?
Hi Myk, I prefer a spoon as well but an order is an order LOL. The story board was used just to mark out the relevant sections. I used callipers to check diameters and the beading cutter sorted its own depth out once the bead had been formed. Take care mate. Cheers, Huw PS I think these were too small for a contour guide.
