I am very committed to being environmentally responsible and 65% of my shops electricity comes from my home solar panel system. I also transport all the raw logs in my electric vehicle. I rarely pay for wood for turning projects since there is plenty of local wood that I can use that would otherwise end up in the landfill. I enjoy making art from what would otherwise be trash.
I am a relatively new wood turner, so I'm still working on my technique and make plenty of mistakes! All woodworking can be potentially dangerous, so you should not try anything you see me do without instruction. My videos are for entertainment purposes only. I do wear gloves when turning as I have very painful arthritis in my hands and the gloves support my joints. In general, it is not recommended to wear gloves around power tools like this, but this is how I do it.

Some of the prettiest wood I have seen. Wish we had it around here. Well done on the turning and commentary. Gary

Thanks Gary! I'm honored to have you watch my video! I've been watching you for quite a while and always look forward to your uploads. I have a segmented bowl in progress because of your videos on the topic as well, I have learned a lot from you. After meeting some turners at a craft fair a while back I had an idea for a "log exchange". I thought about loading up a bunch of Arizona wood blanks and driving around to give them to other turner/youtubers in exchange for some of their local turning stock. If you would be interested in something like this, let me know and when I'm ready I'll see if we can make it happen. Thanks again for watching!

@@FRBPturning hi Jim. I found your channel very refreshing and down to earth. I will be watching more and will subscribe when done typing this. I have traded wood with a few other turners. Most not that far away. I live in Oregon. How about you? Gary

@ThePapa1947 I'm in Arizona but I like road trips. So I was kind of envisioning like a western loop to California then up your way and back down through Colorado or something. I think Phil Anderson is in Washington or something and it would be cool to loop him in as well if he was interested. I haven't asked him.

@harveypflugerh5901 thanks Harvey! I personally watch both with and without commentary and can enjoy them. But bad narration can ruin a good video so I was hoping I didn't suck too bad

Nice to see turning again. Very nice work. If everything turned perfectly every time, we would stop turning. The challenges keep us turning. I've been turning for over 45 years, and I still love to hear the wood being cut. I think the commentary is nice. Especially for the newer turners. It let's them know what you are thinking and why you are doing a particular thing.

@johnwoods9995 I've seen a couple of New Zealand turners make some nice stuff. Ireally like turning a variety of wood but I can't justify paying for bowl blanks when I have a couple hundred sitting here that I have gathered for free. Thanks for watching!

Good morning from Florida just found your channel seems to be pretty good as far as your narration goes. I do not like a silent video. I’ll fast forward through it just to check out the design so the more narrations you can put out the better I would enjoy it anyway. Thanks for your effort. Hope to see you soon.

Hi Jim. New to your channel. Beautiful bowl. Acacia is one of the prettier woods in my opinion. I found it interesting that you referred to the pith as “juvenile” wood. Actually the pith is the oldest wood in the tree. Juvenile wood is the sap wood. The checking is just one of those things that we have to deal with sometimes. You did well. Nice work. Glad you shared some of you thought process. For me it helps me get engaged. I do the same on my videos.
@FRBPturning
@FRBPturning 7 дней назад
Thank you very much! I think I picked up the term from some sawmill videos I watch (Out of the Woods). He calls it that because that's the wood that was laid down when the tree was young, and it's typically a bit softer and of different character than the rest of the log. I'm not sure if that's "correct" but I picked it up from him. Thanks for watching and commenting! I'll have to check out your channel.

Very nice bowl, Jim. In the future: If you have to put the project aside after initial turning, try liberally wetting all surfaces and wrapping in plastic. Works well for me.
@FRBPturning
@FRBPturning 7 дней назад
Thanks Louis! I usually just once-turn bowls from wet and let them warp and dry. It's so dry here in Phoenix that they are almost completely dry by the time I'm done sanding if I do it thin enough. I've seen a lot of different methods of twice turning and I think I'll try some of them since I have a couple hundred blanks sitting around that I could probably turn/core and set aside. I appreciate the tip!

Beautiful piece! I way prefer commentary to everything looking like it's done just quickly and quietly -- that's just really eerie to me. Not that I'm a total stranger to wood working, but I do love to learn, and with this video alone, I've learned several things from you that I haven't learned from other wood channels, so this is really great. Thank you!😊

Hi Jim. Good to see a video from you. Never thought shoestring acacia would look that good. I will have to find some, especially since the monsoon has returned?
@FRBPturning
@FRBPturning 7 дней назад
Thanks 👍Same! all these trees in yards and along roads have gold in them. Much to my surprise! I actually have blanks of Willow and Shoestring acacia and possibly one other variety. They are very similar inside, but one is a bit darker in the heartwood and has a bright red layer right under the bark before the sapwood. Now that I know what the trees look like, I see them everywhere. Keep an eye out after a storm and hit up the landscaping crews. I asked the crews and brought my chainsaw to the tree and I got them free since I saved them work and disposal money. I also really enjoy turning Palo Verde even though the wood smells really bad when it's cut. After a finish it doesn't smell and it is bright yellow all the way through. Almost all of my Palo Verde blanks have spalted and developed browns and greyish blues that really go with the yellow. If you check out my other videos or my website you can see what Palo Verde can be. Thanks for watching!
