Thanks Rod, It is very special wood and I have never seen grain in Oak like this before. I know it's a crotch piece but still amazing grain. Take care my friend and thanks for taking the time to comment. Cheers, Huw
Thanks Phil This really is a special pen for me. I love the film and to have a small part of it metaphorically is wonderful. Take care my friend. Cheers, Huw
I could not agree more, Huw. The Shawshank Redemption is on the top iconic movies of all time! With all the crazy’s around the world now I’m surprised they have not tried to ban this movie. I certainly love that historical, well constructed movie. You did create a beautiful Oak pen, and with all it’s history, I would be keeping it too. Cheers
Thanks Dennis I love that film and have probably watched it at least a dozen times. Even though I know the ending it is still brilliant. I use the pen every day. Take care my friend. Cheers, Huw
Stunning is the perfect word to describe that pen. It’s absolutely stunning. A very interesting story to go along with it. Great work my friend. I enjoyed watching over my first cup of coffee.☕️ Time for a second cup now and maybe a bagel too.😉 Take care Huw and have a fantastic day!
Thank you Doug, Really pleased how good the kit looks with the Oak. I'll use the same kit for the others I'll be making. Take care my friend. Cheers, Huw
Hi, Huw. I remember when Shawshank Redemption Oak started showing up for sale in the Facebook pen turning groups. So many people were up in arms... "How could you dare cut such an iconic tree??" The seller had to explain over and over that the tree came down in a storm. The pen looks super nice, definitely a keeper!
Thanks Ted, I can imagine the outrage but it took 2 storms to eventually bring it down and I believe it was eventually brought down totally for safety reasons. I have never seen Oak like it and definitely keeping this one. Thanks for watching and commenting Ted. Take care. Cheers, Huw
Thanks John, I have never seen Oak like it and I feel privileged to have turned some. Will be watching your latest tomorrow. Take care mate. Cheers, Huw
I must confess Huw I haven't seen the film however, that is a beauty of a pen mate. The kit and blank work perfectly together and I don't blame you for keeping this one, it really is a special, top notch mate ! Cheers and take care Bram
Thanks Pete. I have seen lots of pens made from Iconic pieces of wood and have thought about buying some of them but I just had to have some of this tree despite the cost and shipping as I just love the film. Take care mate. Cheers, Huw
Very nice pen Huw with a great story. It was a great movie based on Steven Kings novel. One of my favorites that Morgan Freeman was in. If I could find a piece of wood from the movie Cool Hand Luke I might consider getting a chunk. One of my all time favorite movies. We very seldom go to the movies any more but did the other day. I will tell you about it next time we talk. It would probably stir up lots of controversy here. Take care, Gary
Thanks Gary, I really love the film and to have some of this wood is incredible. Look forward to chatting to you some time soon. Cool Hand Luke is also a great film and it has been years since i've watched it. Take care my friend. Hwyl, Huw
Beautiful. I certainly understand keeping it for yourself. 2 or 3 years ago, I found something called Curly Pyinma (Asian Satinwood) and made a pen out of it. When I saw how it finished, I just had to keep just for me.
Thanks Stuart, There are some things you make that you just have to hang on to. I use the pen every day and it is very comfortable to use. Take care mate. Cheers, Huw
Wow what a video, I enjoyed every single second of it. Thanks for sharing it. You have an amazing item there Huw. I do have to ask what are the other two films in your top 3.......... AJ
Thanks AJ. I'm over the moon with it and use it everyday. You are the first to ask that question, They are the Taken (with Liam Neeson) and believe it or not Mama Mia. Take care mate and looking forward to your next one. Cheers, Huw
Thanks Stuart, Yes I have used it on bowls, both the Chestnut Burr Bowl and the Elm Platter, but it is not a finish. I then used a hard microcrystalline wax on the pen and Hampshire Sheen's food safe gloss wax on the bowls. I use the pen every day and it is holding up very well. Take care my friend. Cheers, Huw
@@WoodenItBeNice I'm shaking with excitement. I might take the rest of the day off. I understand your excitement at having an artefact from a favourite film. I have a book autographed by my literary hero Robert Benchley. He died in 1945 so this is as close as I'll ever get - just holding a book that he held makes for a strange sense of connection. Excuse me now, I must get back to your video.
