Unexpected pleasure to see this. I guess you're still busy building up stock. If you have a band saw, ripping 2" or even 3" spindles is definitely the way to go for batches of pens. I've had some lovely pieces from Emma. As always, the pens are beautiful.
Huw, it was a pleasure to watch you at work and the logical methods used. It's a massive learning curve for me as I'm just getting started so it was good to see how it's done. Taylor Mirfield's pens look great. I find them a very easy company to deal with and they offer a good product and service. Thank you for sharing
Thanks Jonathan, Batching is a really efficient way of making pens as it doesn't take much longer to cut, drill, tube and turn 12 pens than it does to make 3 pens. TM is a great company to deal with and both Dan and Katie are always helpful. Take care Jonathan. Cheers, Huw
Hi Huw. Beautiful pens for sure. Batching looks like the way to go for making a lot of them. I didn’t mind the camera angle at the end as I could still see most of what you were doing. I liked it. Take care my friend. Cheers, Rob. 😊
Thank you very much Rob. Batching is a great way to make multiple pens at a time. I was quite annoyed that I hadn't reset the camera angle. In my defence all I can say is that I was in turning mode. LOL. Take care my friend. Cheers, Huw
Hi Huw... Lovely looking pens... Great video showing how to batch them out and keeping costs to a minimum... Just remember to switch from the crotch cam to the lathe cam...🤣🤣🤣 Don't hesitate to call again for any totally useless advice... Our thoughts are with you... Take care my friend...All the best.....Andy
Hi Andy, Yes the crotch cam will haunt me now. LOL. This hobby of ours is expensive so any way of reducing that expenditure is fine with me. Thanks for your kind thoughts mate and I'll speak to you when I have an update. Take care my friend. Cheers, Huw
No worries over the bad camera angle Huw. All the pens look great and I enjoyed seeing your process for "production work". I'm trying to figure out how I can do the same for my bowl turning because I've received a lot of encouragement lately to sell my work. All the best, Stuart
Thanks Stuart, The only way I would do it would be to turn all the backs and finish them firs and then turn the bowls out. That way you are not changing the chuck set ups for every bowl. Take care my friend. Cheers, Huw
Hi Vitaliy, Thanks very much. So nice to hear from you gain. Hope you are keeping well and missing your videos. It's been a year now I think. Take care my friend. Cheers, Huw
Huw the pen machine 😂 I was surprised that the Welsh Oak wasn’t your favourite 😉 great to see the abstract camera angles in play I always thought it was only me who has that style. As always mate enjoy your vids. Cheers Steve
Thanks Steve, Haha, abstract camera angles is the nicest way of saying I messed up. The Welsh Oak is really nice but I can't keep going on about how brilliant Wales is. LOL. Take care mate and I'll message you over the weekend with an update. Cheers, Huw
Thanks so much Debs. I appreciate you watching and taking the time to comment. I have subbed and hit the bell for you channel as I do like watching those type of videos. Thanks again Debs and take care. Cheers, Huw
Thanks John, I do like batching pens out, especially when I'm not recording as I can get quite a few done in a day, Take care mate and thanks for watching. Cheers, Huw
Thanks Paul, It is the best way in my opinion as it cuts right down on changing things over and back again. Thanks for watching mate. Take care Paul. Cheers, Huw
Very pleasantly surprised to hear that the blanks are so reasonably priced. Do you buy mail order? What's the cost of postage like? That display of different types at the end there is lovely, certainly an excellent selling point. Cheers Huw and thanks.
Hi Mark, If I buy a pen blank it would cost around 95p to £1.50 for a standard piece of wood. This way the costs are drastically reduced whin then increases profit. I buy most of my wood from Emma, The Tiny Turner and her postage rates are really good. Take care my good friend. Cheers, Huw
1st!!!! one after the 102 others that is LOL Nice batch of pens Huw and you made it look so easy. I am sure if I tried a pen it would be that long for one. Camera angle seemed fine but I was still waking up. I think we could still see what you were doing though. You take care my friend and all my best to you. Hywl, Gary
Thanks Gary, Haha. I'm so annoyed with myself for such a rookie error. Note to self; Must do better next time. LOL. Take care my friend and I'll email you tomorrow afternoon with an update hopefully. Hwyl, Huw
Not to worry Huw camera angles can and do catch all of us. Maybe I will tell you about the angle I had to edit out one day LOL. Auto focus can mess you up as well. If a chip lands in the wrong spot on the camera it could mess the focus up bad. Ask me how I know that. Thanks Huw and will be watching for it. Hwyl, Gary
Thank you very much. I can smile about it now but was a bit annoyed at making such a silly mistake. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. I really appreciate it. Take care. Cheers, Huw
@@WoodenItBeNice I'm doing 10 slimline in two batches of 5. I just finished the first 5 and glued up the 2nd batch of 5. Then I might do some of the more expensive ones I sell. I spent a fair amount with penskitmall!
At last, a big hello from an old old old timer, lol,.....superb batching and pens from the “pen Meister” no worries about the poor camera angle mate still a good video! Cheers, Bram
Hi Bram, I'm so pleased to see this pop up, just don't overdo the catching up please. I did another lot later on so I'm getting there regarding what I need for the first 2 markets which start next Tuesday. Take care my friend and we'll speak soon. Cheers, Huw
Nice job Huw, defo feels good to get a load batched out. Well done mate. If you get a chance to PM me what craft shows your going to I'll seen if me and my Jane cane make one or two. Regards Conor
Thanks Sid, Great news on starting to make pens but then I guess I am slightly biased towards pen Making. LOL. Hope you video some of them. Take care Sid. Cheers, Huw
Hi Huw, enjoy your videos. I too did wood turning as a recovery from surgery but from heart surgery after a heart attack. Later on had the one knee replaced & found the knee tightened up from standing by the lathe, did you not experience this?
Thanks Doug, Sorry to hear about your heart attack and hope you are now fully recovered. I find the slight side to side "rocking" movement as I turn really helps my knees and they feel much looser after a couple of hours turning than before I started the sessions. Take care Doug and thanks again for the compliment about my videos. Cheers, Huw
Very nice Huw I've turned lots of pens but never sold any but thinking about the market in Edinburgh but not sure what price to change would be greatful if you could give me a clue cheers Ray
Thanks Ray. When I started selling pens roughly 6 years ago is used this formula; Cost of Pen Kit + Cost of Pen Blank + Cost of Pen Case + £1 (for incidentals like sandpaper, finishes etc) and then multiplied the total by 2.5. This gave me a ball park figure which I could adjust up or down to the nearest £ and also a 60% Gross Profit. Hope this helps and good luck with Edinburgh if you decide to go there. Take care Ray. Cheers, Huw
Hi Grahame, Yes I do and a future video will be me batching 5 of them. I use TM Omega Kits and they are really good with a very good quality nib. Take care mate. Cheers, Huw
Thanks Mark, Don't shoot me I'm only the Piano player. LOL. I do like batching things out as I get into a mind set and just get on with it. Take care mate. Cheers, Huw
