Tomislav, I liked your video. When I started I bought a set of Benjamin Best tools. Since then I buy tools individually, as you stated in the video. My preferred vendor is Dway Tools. I find them to be of high quality. I also like making my own tools; bedan, beading and parting, and even some carbide tools. Thank You for sharing your videos!

Always good to get the information from an expert who uses the tools every day. These presentations actually save a newcomer money and frustration. One regular presenter I see has his shop walls covered in dozens of tools, many are the same, it must be daunting for any newcomer to see that sort of presentation as a first entry into wood turning. Thank you for sharing your time & expertise. Greetings from Tasmania Australia 👍😁🇦🇺🦘

Excellent description of they reasons why you choose tools & grinds. I have an older set up tools coming to me. I believe they're new enough to be HSS, and will become custom scrapers, if they are decent metal. I wasn't sure how to identify carbon steel, but now I do since you described those you have inherited.

Thank you Jay very much.... Two cherry brand scrapers that I have are carbon steel but they perform really good, and they are new ... Ussually it says that is HSS on the tool itself....

Tomislov …. Another great video! As a new turner, I’ve tried over the past year to determine just exactly the tools I need. There are so many different tools on the market it’s difficult not to get trapped into buying things that are not necessary. I appreciate how you discussed the various grinds and how they work ….. appears to me that the grind that the tool presents is the most important part of any of the tools. Thank you again for your time and effort 🇨🇱🤠

I also found the 1 inch continental gouge useful for other than roughing, it works well for larger than 4 inch balls on top of newel post it can be used just like a skew with good increase in speed. Maybe it is not a smooth as a skew, but for speed on real large stuff works well.
@tomislavtomasicwoodturning
@tomislavtomasicwoodturning Год назад
That is true, That is why I like to use it insted just buying spindle roughing gouge to do one job.....🤗

A quick summary for this video: - We don't need to start with premium products. - You can do many things with even one 1/2 bowl gauge - Crown Tools (UK), Henry Taylor Tools (UK), Kirschen Two Cherries (German) brands getting used by Mr. Tomislav I wish I could buy my very first tools via your affiliate link in the description but it seems they are not shipping to Turkey... I have to find a way to import my gauges here. Thanks to Turkish customs laws that'll at least double the prices...

Sorry to hear that, try gurtool company, if some stores don't have option to choose Turkey,try sending them email and ask direct if they will ship , ofcourse before you buy, sometimes they need to update the shipping list.

Hi, in relation to buying tools where you say that they need to be sharpened starting out. Does that mean that if you were to say buy a set of Record Power chisels or similar they would need to be sharpened first before use.?
@tomislavtomasicwoodturning
@tomislavtomasicwoodturning Год назад
I always do sharpen them, I found them with weird grinds and not as sharp as you can get it at home.... Woodturning store do sharpen (most of them) really well and beginner cound see how the tool should look like and how it performs.... Pretty much all set of tools come like that, not just Record power... Maybe some premium brand like dway or something similar will have good grinds and sharpness.....thank you for watching 🤗

Hi, at around 6:00 you say that the two-cherries continental gouge can be used for shaping bowls? - i also have the same gouge, and use it for roughing and rough shaping spindle work. But, i always assumed using anything with a tang on cross-grain work is asking for disaster - because it lacks the strength of material where the tang meets the handle unlike with the bowl gouges? just asking before i go trying to hollow out a bowl, do you mean its fine to use it on end-grain bowls and for normal turning of bowls?
@tomislavtomasicwoodturning
@tomislavtomasicwoodturning 6 месяцев назад
Hi thank you for watching and comment, that gouge is all I could get here at the time, and your conserns are right, it can be dangerous to use it with more overhang over the rest, on outside of bowls its ok since you dont overhang much but on inside of bowls use it on shallow stuff.... Also be aware that wider continental gouge can be catch prone due to wide edge.
@DigitalNative01

I see, yeah we dont get many brands besides Narex, Two cherries, and Stryi where i am at the moment either - turkey - hence prolly why i have the same gouge. Thank you for the clarification, im kinda new to turning and teaching myself as i go - your videos are a real help - much appreciated sir.@@tomislavtomasicwoodturning
