I've got some more exotic wood to show off to everyone! This week, we're making some ball point and fountain pens out of Wenge, which is a stunning hardwood that has quite possibly the nicest grain patterns I've ever seen. It's most certainly the darkest wood I've ever worked with, and so it's been a real treat turning these pens out over the last week or so.
In case you didn't notice, I'm also working with a new pen mandrel in this video. My tail stock has been acting up on me for the better part of a year now, and finally, the axle sleeve assembly has fully seized inside of the tail stock. I'm currently waiting on replacement parts. Until it's fixed, though, I can't use the pen mandrel I've always used in the past, which is the one with the pen mandrel saver. This is my first time trying a screw on style pen mandrel. Although I haven't used it for very long, I think I do prefer the mandrel saver style.
For any pen turners out there, I'd love to know what your preferred mandrel style is. If you have one, let me know down below!

Nice job. I've made a few Wenge pens as well and it is beautiful wood. I do recommend being careful with it dust and splinters from Wenge are reported to be pretty nasty. As for mandrel choice, I have always used one with a mandrel saver. Recently I have begun turning between centers. Just using 60 degree dead in the head stock and 60 degree live center in the tail stock and the standard bushings. Yes you have to turn each part separately, but I'm good with that, I have noticed it is more stable and never have any oval issues. Note it won't work on slim and trimline pens, has to have bushings that go inside the tube. Here is another tip I picked up recently (thanks to ED at ExoticBlanks), instead of facing the blank before I turn, I turn down to within about 1mm of the bushings and then face the blank, much less work. I also stopped using a pen mill and now use a jig on my sander (could also use a Jacobs chuck on the lathe). Again, thanks Ed on that one. Keep up the great work!

Thanks, David, for the helpful tips! Regarding the wenge dust, do you mean nasty from a safety point of view?

@@formanwoodworking Yes, inhaling the dust or getting splinters. Just wear dust protection and if you get a splinter, clean it out real good. I meant to ask... what fountain pen kit is that?

@@davidbondi Ah, okay. Yeah, I'm pretty strict on wearing a respirator at any point in my workshop, and that's partly because I am not well read of wood toxicity 😅 And the fountain kits I use are these, in various colours of course: www.penblanks.ca/algonquin-fountain-pen-kit-black-titanium/

@@formanwoodworking Thanks, I'm always looking for good kits. Glad you wear a respirator, I do the same anytime I'm turning, cutting, sanding, finishing, etc...
